The reason Joel laughs when he's being chased in horror scenarios is actually legitimately hotly debated in the world of psychology, and he's an incredible case study. Some people think laughing when nervous is a self soothing act. Not that you're CONSCIOUSLY nervous, but that your basal instincts are telling you that you're being chased, so it starts to activate the fight or flight response. You might not be able to hear it, but sometimes Joel can get a catch in his throat like at around 7:09, which is a telltale sign that despite his laughter, he is subconsciously a bit on edge. He easily recovers, though, because at the same time, the more cognitive and logically inclined parts of his brain are aware that the "chase" doesn't actually pose any threat. So, people theorise that this elicits laughter to calm down the autonomic nervous system. Other people theorise that he laughs when scary things happen, because comedy and horror stem from the same thing: Incongruity and a subversion of expectations. Basically, they think that the same things that make a jumpscare so dreaded, is the same thing that makes a punchline so hilarious: expectation, diversion, subversion. Anyway, here's wonderwall.
I simply think that the tickling sensation of getting scared or the "fight or flee" instinct is making poeple laugh. Especially when we have social support, for example, people watching the stream and chatting with us. In a comedic situation like this, we simply aren't afraid of these things. We just don't wanna get caught and lose. So, it can get quite tickly when it triggers that instinct without attended fear.
Every time I see a horror game where a thing chases you and you can do a run around the table thing to abuse it's AI I ALWAYS wonder how difficult would it be to program a fail safe where the thing will detect the player is doing that and just fucking jump over the table and immediately get them Literally would be the absolute best thing for the way Joel plays horror games
Probably relatively hard. If watching people trying to make games tought me anything is that pathing is particularly shit. The only solution really seems to be allowing them to break or walk trough (or above) the obstacle, or giving the monster chasing you some limited range attack, that allows them to attack you even when you have something between you and them. Also making them faster could work. But actually making an AI that can detect this kinda bs sounds like it'd be complicated
@@ConscriptDavid That's why you don't pair it to the enemy/stalker. You pair it to the table. Place a sphere for collision around the table, then place four boxes for further collision on each end, so you have Sphere1, Box1, Box2, Box3, and Box4. If both the player and the enemy/stalker are within proximity of the table and thus within Sphere1, a counter goes up. When the counter hits the specified number, it tells the enemy/stalker "When you hit Box%s next time, perform animation 17 [jumpacrosstable1]". It's really simple when you know how to do it.
@@CuckBalls The way Mario is animated too, it just adds to the scooby-doo chase feel. He bumps around on all the walls, runs with his arms from side to side
I wonder what Joel's reaction to Mario 85 would be, because on one hand it's a very effective game but on the other it's goofy enough as a concept for him to have fun with it
Always a pleasure to see a new Vinesauce video on the feed. And something we ALL know is gonna work well with Joel. Gotta re-binge Joels stuff man i've missed a ton. He should check out the new Signal Simulator type horror game that came out too, literally his dream game. Voices of the Void.
Fun fact : he did talk about that game at the beginning of the stream, tho he didn't include it in this upload, you'll have to go to his twitch channel to see his reaction to the gameplay.
Shit tier Horror game logic. In shit horror it's 50/50 they're able to detect you in the box at all and even if you do I'd say it's only 25% of the time the monster can still get you in the hidey hole. Most of the time you can wait till they forget aggro or sit in the box laughing at them until you're ready to come out and die.
48:50 Lmao Joel just summed up my experience with the xbox 360 while growing up poor. I played the absolute shit out of the mercenaries world in flames demo and loved every minute of it
I really wanted to watch this stream live because I love Mario horror romhacks, even if they're silly or well-made, if they're either from a creepypasta made by a 12 year old or a really developed story, but I was busy and I'm still finishing Vinny's SMW Horror hacks video, also remember watching a lot the Halloween Contests from Simpleflips and they were the goat, have to say thank you Joey for giving these hacks an opportunity because at the end they can make you interested or give you a good laugh
7:37 Same here, and I'm positive its not based in fear for me personally, but from thrill I guess...I'd also get the same rush of mad laughter from chasing my friends while playing hide and seek. Just imagine how fun it'd be to be like Jack in RE7 - super strength, immortality and just having a blast chasin people around with your trusty shovel 🤣
i hope joel plays the binding of isaac, but its the old flash version, NO dlc, or maybe just wrath of the lamb. its less popular so chances are people will try to backseat and be wrong. and itll be funny.
Mario 64 used to legitimately terrify me as a kid to the point where I used to make my dad take me to the Bowser levels for me until I was like... 12. Lol the funniest part was finding out as an adult the portrait was just the same picture from lethal lava land but blown up and pixelated to all hell
If it was any other game, I'd say he's never going to play it, but it's Dwarf Fortress so he will. I just hope he doesn't force himself to play the Steam version. He's used to playing the game with no tileset, he shouldn't force himself to play in a way that he's not used to just because some dumb fucks in chat _NEED_ to know _EXACTLY_ what's going on _AT ALL TIMES_ otherwise they will vomit their intestines.
Happy Late Birthday Jottles! I wasn't able to catch it live in the 29th, but whatever, I was planning to do something for the booru too, but I didn't get around to do it (Which means: I didn't want to do it because I'm a lazy, indifferent fucker) Fun fact: September 5th is my birthday, exactly a week after Joey's.
did not expect Joe to respond to _"wouldn't it be really funy if we invade Roblox stream and make all the games unplayable heehee"_ with a rant about how Roblox is cringe
I coule immediately tell that the fps mario 64 game was badly coded and when joel was getting killed repeatedly picking up the peach stattuette and youre forced to go inside the chest immediately
Honestly pretty interesting idea for a horror game because you unleash evil spirits to progress and they patrol the map making it incrementally harder.
From what I can tell, the new SR game is a silly remake of the first game... which doesn't need a SILLY remake, it needs one that's silly _and_ serious, like the game was
