Less taking the piss out of mascot horror, but more embracing it's inspiration full on and letting the fun puppets be fun puppets. But also hard to not see the grab animation as being anything other than making fun of indie jumpscares hahaha

If the case is that there are just sentient puppets as normal I think that whatever was going on counts as, like, puppet abuse- like they isolated them from knowledge about the outside world and then just abandoned them? Like, if the puppets were unusual and thus had no rights, then I guess no one would do anything about any of that, but if sentient puppets were normal surely they couldn’t just leave them there to go insane watching cable news?

It uses a mascot horror skin, but the gameplay is just a solid resident evil homage.

@@lukeeichenlaub3183 Even then, it's not really horror. When Freddy gets you, you get stuffed into what's essentially an iron maiden and he lets out a sinister chuckle on his way to your office. Here, you get pushed and the puppets just continue spouting nonsense. It's very similar to Baldy. That one is a Slender clone, but it's too absurd to be taken seriously even in context and doesn't try to be extra scary in the first place.

@@lukeeichenlaub3183 I do want to say that, in terms of this topic, I feel like this is what survival horror as a genre is. Most other games with the label like Amnesia The Dark Descent were mostly just regular adventure games or stealth like in the case of Outlast, or a mixture of both in the case of, again, The Dark Descent. The fact the genre died for long enough that we're resorting to calling them just RE homages reminds me of how when adventure games came back, people called them either walking sims or movie-games. All in all, I'm happy more games like this are being made. It was a pretty big untapped market with a lotta potential for cool games.

It is taking itself seriously in some aspects. The war the game mentions isn't a joke and has direct effect on other things. It's just that the game doesn't pretend that the puppets are super scary and messed up or make them an entirely different thing from what they appear to be, unlike many other games that make the childhood thing TWISTED.

It doesn’t take itself too seriously, but at the same time it still has a nice theme of “optimism vs cynicism” that feels taken really seriously in a good way. Almost like it wants to impart a good message onto it’s likely young audience

Really just needs to clean up the animations to make em look less stiff, and it'll be a very solid game.

@@bugjams only on Gordon, the puppets are fine as is. Which is very convenient because Gordon is a pair of floating arms.

I love how people keep lumping Poppy Playtime into the "slop" cateory when it's an actual good game with thought and effort put into it, because they're mad that bootleggers merchandised Huggy Wuggy or something.

The prospect of huggy wuggy/ bendy and the anal beeds being grimdark is a funny concept

I know, right? This isn't even a horror game, it's honestly getting close to being more adventure than anything. Kind of deranged adventure, but still adventure.

Yeah! Ricky is more like the voice of all the puppets too. Overall the game lets its own scenario plays out, and the ending it eventually reaches is actually kinda touching

Yeah like from what I see, Norman is the main one that’s shown in like trailers and such. Even RU-vid videos most of the time. But he’s literally a basic enemy but it works because it makes it less exaggerated in my opinion.

Makes me wonder why they named it that honestly, but for how popular that garbage got, maybe a bunch of kids are just blindly purchasing any game with neighbor in the title.

​@@YohoatIts worth a good study on culture and the human psyche. "Popular" among kids happens because of the pog and pokemon card trend and fell apart as quickly. Kids change their tastes and preferences like you shed hair and skin cells; it was never ment to last.

The funny thing is according to the lore, their show became less prevalent because of a war that was happening, and people were broadcasting the war more than their show, hence their downfall.

This is probably one of my runner ups for goty but it's absolutely missing some small touches like that, hitting walls with the wrench doesn't make a clank sound and walking through water doesn't have any splashing sounds but I'm nit-picking. Games fantastic otherwise

It would make more sense if they didn't since they are apparently inmortal and they only thing that stops them is tying them up.

@elio7610 nah, had some really fucked pain dreams of witnessing my life up until the accident I got in like I was watching a slide show, sort of? Just weird to explain it, it would 'play' to the point it happened,then darkness and after a time it would replay again. After awhile, no idea how long. The slideshow ended, and I was in darkness. After a while, it felt like I was in the presence of some grand cosmic entity. I never 'saw' this presence, but I could feel it around me, or like I was close to it. I have no idea how, but somehow I came to this realization that life and everything we knew as reality was nothing more than the dreams of this great slumbering thing, and it was starting to awake. Now, obviously, should it awaken, life, reality, and everything we know would end. Couldn't let that happen. I have no idea how, but somehow, I got it to stay asleep. Then I awoke in the ICU I believe. Yeah...shit messed with me years. Honestly had me relooking HP Lovecraft, maybe he saw similar but instead of outright saying it, he wrote stories about his experiences? Idk man

The dev previously did Kyle is Famous so you know that they (Ethan & John Szymanski) probably wrote a bunch of that stuff.

@@nathane5287 The Szymanski brothers (Dave, Ethan, and John) all seem to have the most deliciously unhinged sense of humor between Dusk, This, and their stuff in Dread X, so I imagine they wrote it. Especially since the puppets share some of their dialog as show in the video.

Resident Evil I get, but people keep mentioning bioshock when literally the only similarity is that you have a Wrench and the enemies ramble about stuff (which they also do in RE4). There's no plasmid-style powers or random boss encounters or weird social commentary on capitalism/communism or... The other two ripped off the muppets and mascot concepts so that's more just a shared source of inspiration.

having watched jabroni mike's playthrough of this game, the layout is stupidly difficult to navigate by landmarks alone. the map isn't so much of a suggestion or an assistive device as it is a requirement.
