​@@boehan605 A fact to take into account. After the first arc (War/Prologue Arc) the violence in Vinland Saga gets a bit more graphic with the aim of Yukimura wanting to reflect the horror that is violence and war as horrible it actually is to the readers/viewers.

Tbf, slavery was a very VERY norm thing back in the day and slaves were seen as inferior beings compared to their owners sogp given the era they were in where snake allowed thorfinn and einar eating in the same table as him with good food served by arnheid, joking and having light-hearted conversations with them time-to-time, by standards of that time, snake could be considered as “nice”, tho it would be an entirely different story if it was today ofc, which was why thorfinn could see him as a “kind” person during the slavery era. Also snake is a principled guy. He did make a fair point about how was it fair for him to let gardar go when he killed five of his subordinates. That’s like letting a murderer free for killing your staffs today. He questioned if gardar’s life worth so much more compared to the other five that his mass murderer act could easily be faced with 0 consequences. And he did stop ketil from unintentionally killing arnheid. By the laws of slavery, owners are allowed to punish their slaves however they wanted, even through death but snake actually stepped in to remind ketil the lines between his punishment (flogging vs execution). He acknowledged ketil could do whatever he wanted with arnheid, but still tried to get on ketil’s rational side to make sure if that was what ketil truly wanted, instead of just letting him beat up arnheid shamelessly till death. So yeah, in that era i’d agree with thorfinn that snake is a relatively decent and rational guy.
