The first "Get 30 coins" level reminded me of when I went to watch my cousin play in an actual Nintendo World Championship somewhere in NYC in either 1990 or 1991. You had to get 50 coins in SMB, then the game transitioned to Tetris to get 1 line, then to Rad Racer where I think you just drove for as long as possible or maybe until you reached the first checkpoint. I was really young but I noticed everyone getting the 50th coin around the same exact spot, beginning to realize I was witnessing what would be my first introduction to the concept of optimized speedrunning.

Wow, you were at the early NWC? Lucky! I wasn't even born yet. Those competition cartridges are now some of the rarest NES carts.

@@Bubbabyte99 I definitely didn't get my hands on any of those cartridges, and I mostly went around playing some timed trial versions of NES games that hadn't been released in NA yet, including a game I still have yet to find the title of. I _do_ have a cartridge of StarFox Super Weekend though. Those are worth quite a bit now, but I have no plans on selling it.

I played so much Balloon Fight for last week's leaderboard challenge that I started having ideas for a new Balloon Fight game. I developed an appreciation for it. I was thinking about how you could animate the character doing a cool flip-jump off the ground when they bounce off it at an angle, and kicking at the enemy's balloons/parachutes. You could give them spurs. Jesus, it wormed its way into my brain. But it was so worth it to tie for 1st place that week.

I went through the same thing, but I was thinking of how you could implement similar physics to the game for something like a jetpack in a Metroidvania. The movement is frustrating but oddly satisfying when you start to get the hang of it

Balloon Fight is such an underrated game. There was a Flash game back in the day called "Balloon Duel" that I played a ton, and it always made me wish Nintendo would bring the game back for a proper sequel.

If you enjoy casual speedrunning it’s very enjoyable finished all S ranks in about 3 days not much to do after that besides legendary trials,improving your times, and weekly tourneys.

Technically, Super Mario Bros. 3 was released in the US in 1989, but it was only on select PlayChoice-10 arcade machines. The NES console release wasn't until February, 1990, however. I remember first seeing it at a local video store, but it was rented out whenever my mom took me there. Finally, a copy was actually in stock, and I literally jumped for joy and acted like a little squealing monkey.

I recall Vinny saying his D-pad was also fucking up in a Zelda stream. Yet my Pro of 7 years' D-pad is probably still the best one I have out of all my gamepads (recently beat Shy Guy Surfing with it). Vinny's luck with controllers is still as bad as ever.
