I love these old car commercials. Those were beautiful pieces of art, as opposed to stinky pieces of POO POO driving on the roads today.

My dad worked for Chrysler at their Highland Park headquarters in 1956; when a designer friend unlocked a door, and took him into a room to see the new `57s, he told me it practically took his breath away!

Looking at them in comparison - the DeSoto seemed to have the cleanest lines...... love how the music gets downright regal when the Imperial is rolled out.

Enjoyed seeing William Lundigan in this commercial. He hosted Climax during the 50’s. I think this was taken from one of their broadcasts. I would have been 11 years old in 1957. Loved these cars.

I'm bragging! I found a '56 (October Baby so really she's a '57) Chrysler Saratoga. She's no Christine, but she has the same front end! And her fins are just WOW!!! No Rust!! Some dents but easily fixable. Her chrome all the way around is Perfect! Bumpers are strait as is the frame. I have to reassemble the engine but that's good because I know it'll work when I get it all back together. She is a push button Automatic and the entire car is black, but the roof's paint is completely gone so planning on possibly painting that red and doing red on the fins to match. I do want to keep her as original as I can, but I can not escape having to repair what really needs it so I'd rather sacrifice some originality to preserve her for the future. The old lady is selling it to me for $1k!! I also named her 'Bettie' in honor of Bettie Page :) Rockabilly and Hot August Nights.. here I come! =D UPDATE: I wrote this when I knew nothing lol! My 57 Chrysler was actually built in Los Angeles in September of 57. Much has happened since my first comment here. Now have a 57 Plymouth Belvedere too. Love the Forward Look cars :)

How did the restoration go? I’m currently working on a very colorful 1959 Dodge, in about the condition you describe. These are long term projects requiring a lot of patience (at least at the speed and budget I am working). Hope yours turned out well.

We had a 1957 Dodge like this one and always had brake problems, not to mention rust issues.

We had a 56 Dodge Royal Lancer. Coral & cream. Had dual antenna on both fins. Dual mufflers. Always replacing one and then the other muffler! beautiful car though.

Yeah each trim level was a new "Model" as well as 2 door, 4 door, wagon, hard top, convertable and Business Coup (salesman's special without back seat). I always thought it was stretching the definition of model.

Chrysler automobiles were so far ahead of the industry in their engineering and styling, yet the 1958 recession hit Chrysler the hardest of the "Big Three".

Torsion Bar front suspension was used in Chevrolet light trucks from 1960 through 1962. And it worked great. Must have cost too much for Chevrolet to bother with.

Oops! The dangers of doing complicated commercials live. But regardless, yes - "Compare the fins. Those fins! They're the keynote of our styling leadership. Styling that others are trying to follow." True!

I’ve always wondered why so much early television was aired live. Not just talk shows or the news, when it makes sense, but also Sitcoms, Soap Operas and things like that.

1957 DeSotos are the most attractive cars ever made, anywhere. That is a fact. The styling really was exciting for the '57 Chrysler Corp. cars, but unfortunately they were so popular that they quickly sold out and were hard to get. And even worse, their quality was inferior.
@frdjr2527

My uncle owned a '57 Dodge brand new that had transmission slippage on day one. These cars were rushed into production, hence the quality issues.

Classy commercial that you don't see today. And the DeSotos had the best styling and the Imperial was top notch ugly. Look at the auction values of DeSotos lately!

'Tis weird when they show the '57 Chrysler; the headlights look exactly like human eyes. Is this my imagination, a coincidental illusion caused by the film lights and camera angle, or was this mechanical anthropomorphism set up deliberately by the makers?

I noticed that as well. I think it is possible those headlights look a little odd because they may have been designed to accept 4 bulbs and only two made it into production. My understanding is that quad headlights were not street legal prior to approximately some point in 1957. Most 1958 models had them.

If their quality had only matched their beauty, Chrysler’s story would have been so much different. Unfortunately poor quality met a recession in 1958, and Chrysler responded with the ugliest cars ever made in 1959. I’ve spent my entire life fascinated by the 1957 Mopars. The 1957 Plymouth is one of the most beautiful cars ever made, closely followed by that year’s DeSoto. Dodge was a bit overkill on chrome and spaceship inspiration, Chrysler looked like DeSoto’s plain sister and Imperial was a lot to take in. Just the same, I love them all. It would be 1963 before I would admire Mopar design again.

@3511putman 3 года назад
I'm in agreement overall, but must differ with your lineup when it comes to beauty. While (Chevy aside) the Plymouth's styling is the most iconic of this -- cardom's most incomparable year for styling -- Chrysler is the cleanest and most beautiful looking. I think that the Chrysler 300-C takes its place alongside the Lincoln Continental Mark III as the most beautiful American car to ever roll off an assembly line.

I love the styling of these 50's cars. However, they cannot even minutely compare with modern cars with modern technology, economy and safety features. These were rust buckets. Here in Ontario/Quebec they would rust out in 3-4 years. Engines weren't too bad, but the rest of the car was shot. Still beautiful styling though.
