Washing a load of towels in the 1970s Frigidaire 1-18 washer. Thank you to Antonio for the video suggestion. The spin on this machine is loud due to bearings and the rollers. I plan to do a full cycle video with another 1-18 of mine. Thank You for watching!

Built by GM Frigidaire in their Dayton Ohio plant. After Frigidaire was sold to WCI in 1979, the Frigidaire plant in Dayton became the GM Truck assembly plant. Lots of history in that factory and it’s still standing.

They closed that plant back in 2008, and the truck manufacturing moved to their other plants in Indiana and Michigan.

I picked one of these up when my 2.5 year old washer stopped spinning and became useless. I paid 20.00 for it and it was the best money I’ve ever spent. Clothes have never been cleaner. My grandmother talked about having one of these in the 70s and I had never seen one in person. When I saw one pop up on Craigslist, I had to get it!

I remember reading the Frigidaire Jet cone washer was voted #1 by the American Applance Industry standards. Damn shame GM sold to White Consolidated Industries (formerly the White Sewing Machine Co.) WCI destroyed such great names as Westinghouse, Frigidaire, Tappan and Viking.

@@user-oq5bv8ue4c W.C.I did not destroy Fridgaire, Tappan,and others. They had three different washer names, and they chose the Westinghouse design. Fridgaire design was expensive to build and difficult to repair.

Explain, I had a Westinghouse front load for 26 years, and replaced the belts the boot once and the suspension feet twice. My wife's and had a Westinghouse top loadder for 23 years, I replaced the belt once. My. Om had a Westinghouse fridge fo 27 years, no problem. So haw did White Consolidated destroy the brands?

They should bring these machines back, the ones of today are nothing but junk.

Even the early 2000’s top load washers were pretty good. (NOT including the Cabrio or impeller washers, or front loaders). The ones that still had tub breaks and knob controls. They were often labeled “Heavy Duty”. However, nothing beats an extra old one. And yes, only Speed Queen is good today. All other washers are absolute crap. Lowe’s, Home Depot, etc.

I had a 1976 or 1977 model back in the '80s. That was a wonderful machine. I could kick myself for getting rid of it, in place of a front loader. I have an LG front loader now that's given me problems. I would love to go back to a GM Frigidaire like this. If you know anyone selling, please let me know. Thanks

My mother had an avocado model WIAS bought in 1971 served her for 16 yrs. The matching gas dryer was troublesome having igniter issues frequently. Gave the washer away and it was lost during hurricane Rita in 2005. We averaged doing 10 loads a week for a family of 4.

Boy this machine brings back memories for me... I got my Mother one of these machines back in 78 and we had the serviceman out to our house 16 times in 6 months for constant break downs that got so bad that it nearly caused a fire in our house... with that the Land lord told my Mother that the machine had to go, So we got a Whirlpool to replace it!!!

You were right about the filter flows being the best at filtering. The filter on these have a weak flow of water. Nice machine though, I never understood why these 1-18s never filled up all the way, a lot of the tub still showing.

My Mom had one in the 60s. It had a timed water fill. We had low water pressure so it would never fill completely. She ended up having to replace it. Loved that machine. When it was set for small load and you opened the lid it would splash water EVERYWHERE!

I am not sure if you will read or get this, but how can I acquire a 1-18. That was the machine that started my appliance hobby. My Aunt had that exact model in harvest gold that lasted her 35 years! I always did her laundry when we visited her as s small kid and I've been in love with them ever since and I want one so bad, those are the happy memories I had from my very rough childhood. How can I find one that still functions or one I can have rebuilt, if needed?

While washing a load today mine started jumping up and down off the floor at the start of the rinse cycle. The tub is loose in the cabinet and moves side to side much more than before. Something broke inside and it may be the last hurrah for this old timer. Anyone have any suggestions for things to check? I have never had the cabinet open but I think the top comes off somehow to check inside. I've owned it since 1982 when we bought our house and it was probably from the mid :70's. Only repair was about twenty years ago when the hot water valve solenoid went out.
@Gsohoover
@Gsohoover 5 лет назад
It may have broken a mount of some sort. The lid comes up very easily with two tabs on either side. Check around and see. I hope you can get it running again. Very few places will work on machines that old anymore, sadly.
