I tested the HECK out of the Creamback Neo and regular creamback and V Type. Regular Creamback 65m was the winner. Neo was good but didn’t sound as nice in the mids (which is where the DSL40CR is neutral). V Type is a great speaker but it’s very balanced. The DSL40CR is imbalanced tho, kind of scooped in the mids and modern. So it doesn’t fix that to help get a step closer to classic Marshall tone. Also, without a doubt the Creamback has a bigger, heavier Magnet. The DSL is too bass heavy and the V Type speaker magnet is smaller and doesn’t handle it well. It mushes out too easily on the e string stuff. The Creamback is a noticeable improvement here. It’s more stable and flexible. You get a low grind rather than a low mush. It allows you to run more gain too if you want. It’s nice, just bump the presence if you want more upper bite and it’s great.

I was trying to choose between these 2 speakers for My DSL40CR so I went with both. Put the Creamback M in the combo and bought an orange 1 by 12 cab with a V30 and that combo is fantastic perfect blend if vintage and modern and very versatile. Creamback on its own for the vintage. V30 on its own for the modern and both together for the perfect middle ground. Orange cabs are amazing . Such a full sound. With both speakers together the low midrange is huge with lots of grind and growl without getting muddy and the upper mids of the V30 keep the low mids from overpowering the highs

I like it! I like separate cabs for my speakers also rather than mixing in a larger cab. For just being a wooden box, it’s crazy how different cabs can sound so so much better or worse than others. I’ve found that the extra inches you get in the ‘oversized 1x12’ cabs is worth the extra $$ Orange, Mesa, Engl Pro Cab are all really nice. Re needing to rattle some windows - I sold the DSl40 and got a 20 combo for that very reason, I can get the master on the 20 up around 2:00 and it really starts to tighten up and growl \m/ I put the Creamback M in the combo and have an Eminence DV77 in a matching cab and it sounds really good. Thanks for commenting and keep rockin’

Hey man, I saw you have the DSL40CR and played around with speaker swaps. I have two things I'm trying to tame. There's too much bass and I'm missing that Vintage low-gain classic rock tone. Like that AC/DC into tone that is so clear with mid-range growl and vintage tone. Can I get there with a speaker swap or is it just not the amp for that? Amp sounds good, but when I A/B'd with multiple guitars next to a TSL100...I immediately noticed that it was struggling to do that vintage tone and had a lot of bass.

I put in a Vintage 30 in my Marshall DSL40CR, and its the perfect Match, i have a creamback but i like the tone of the Vingtage 30, the speaker has been in another Marshall since 2008 so it was already well Broken in. I'm more of a JCM 800 guy but I've had several Marshall models over the years. Now I have a used DSL15C amp on the way and I'm guessing a speaker upgrade will be happening which is why I'm here.. My 800s (both 1983s) are a 4104 and 4010 combos both stock came with G12T-75s. After all kinds of speaker swaps including Vintage 30s, I wound up with 80 watt Rola Celestions and called it good. My point is I've never liked Vintage 30s in any amp including what I'm hearing here. I'm sure they are Heaven in some amp somewhere but I never heard it. I do like the 65 watt Creamback I'm hearing, I wonder how it stacks up to an Alnico Creamback?

Lever Action Gypsy... you packin’ heat? Never mind, just reminded me of a short barrel lever action Savage 30 30 I used to take with me up river bed treks for gold. Now there are too many houses around to safely plink away with an air gun :) I can’t speak to the Alnico Creamback but from what I understand its the same speaker just lighter because of the smaller, but more powerful magnet. I got acquainted with the G12-75 recently and while I’m still moving it around, I kind of like it. For my Marshall I finally settled on the Creamback after V30, Greenback, and Swampthang were tried. Not sure of your musical style but you may want to check out the Eminence DV-77. It’s getting lots of positive chatter. It took me a while, cause I was supposed to love them, but I’m with you on the V30s haha, but they’re not bad if mixed with something else. My Rectoverb came with a UK made V30 - absolutely terrible! I just bought the DSL 40CR from Sweetwater a few days ago, but I am going to return it. I sold my old Marshall 80V Valvestate amp and thought I would have no problem getting good tones with the Marshall DSL 40CR for home use. Way to much even at 20 watt half power for home use. The amp sounds better in full power, and really does sound awesome when cranked a little bit. For home use I am thinking maybe a 5 watt Blackstar or Marshall head with cab. I also see EVH has a new Stealth LBX coming out in November, with Green and Red channels and PRS MT15 like lights. I would love to play the EVH lunchbox II on 1/4 power mode and see how that sounds at low volume. The PRS MT15 also sounds good to me, but I have heard that at low power it is almost to loud for home use!
@oldguyjammin9732
@oldguyjammin9732 4 года назад
Barry H - Oh why did you have to say ‘new Stealth LBX’ lol, guess I better start cleaning gutters around the neighborhood :) SO... all those amps are probably going to be too loud because none of them will sound REAL good until they’re cranked a tad. Before you return it consider investing another $45 in a JHS little black amp box. It’s a volume control that you put in your FX loop pedal chain and allows you to crank an amp at bedroom levels!! I’ve just started using one and love it. Almost sold my Mesa V 25 cause it was too loud, then I got the JHS and now the Mesa is probably my favorite amp and when I swing over to the Marshall I can run with the masters at 3 O’Clock where they should be without bothering anyone. If you do go the 5 Watt mode I’d say go with the DSL5CR - check my review of that little gem. Takes pedals like a champ and sound perfect right out of the box. Lots more soul than the Blackstar imo. Good luck\m/

@@oldguyjammin9732 Thanks for replying. I haven't returned the DSL yet. I checked out the JHS amp box. Reviews say it is like putting a compact volume pedal in your effects chain. A few days ago I set up a Boss GE-7 EQ pedal in the loop on the DSL 40CR. I noticed with the EQ that even with it set with the effect level flat (no volume boost or decline), I have to turn the amp up when it is engaged. I will experiment with turning the volume level on the GE-7 pedal down and amp up. It may have a similar effect as the JHS amp box. I watched a RU-vid video from Wampler pedals called "6 ways to use an EQ pedal for better tone, and Hot Rod Fender tone tips". He uses the Boss GE-7 with EQ flat, and says it can be used as a clean volume boost. If you do have a EQ pedal and run Fender amps I would check out the video from Wampler. I am torn, because the DSL40CR can cover so many classic Marshall tones in one package. Right now though the classic gain channel does not break up on the red voicing with low volume settings. Thanks again for the help.

@@oldguyjammin9732 How is the JHS different than just using the master/channel volumes? I've got the DSL40CR and using it at home but also it'll be gigged at times so louder is ok. I do think that the G12M sounds great in Marshall amps but that difference is subtle and speakers are expensive. I’d try running your resonance at zero, turn the master up to 1:00 or higher and then start increasing the gain. You could try getting it a little too hot and roll off your guitar volume. You could bias it on the cold side, maybe like 30 mV DC. You could swap out the first tube in the socket closest to the cable input for a 12AY7 (maybe both V1 and V2) to reduce the overall gain of the amp. You could us a light boost pedal with clean channel. You could buy a Friedman Little Sister, lol. I was playing AC/DC on it yesterday - sounded great. Come back with more Qs if you like.

I like the G12M65 much better than the H, and I’d also recommend putting a 12AY7 tube in the V1 socket… that’s the one closest to the input jack. When you’re done with all that, reduce the bias to 38 mV DC - you’ll have a much nicer crunch tone. Another thing to consider is that Marshall amps need to have the master volumes up pretty high to sound good. Always have your master up, at least past noon and then adjust your gain knob.

I had both Presence and Treble all the way up and Bass at 0 and still too much bass and not enough Treble. Would you say the G12M had a lot of treble? I had an old Fender amp that was 2x12 and I put V30's in that one and it was awesome but the distortion channel on that amp lacked a bit. Some people really like Mesa, I prefer Engl and Randal though, but that doesn’t mean Mesa has to be put in the SUCKS category. Happy Trail, find some love bro

Thanks for commenting...? Hey what do these time stamps mean or represent? I’ve gotten a few lately and am curious. Anything diabolical, or just a gentle hint to time stamp my vids, lol
