So if that tone arm is still working then I guess it’s not really broken, so don’t beat yourself up over being a procrastinator when your just waiting for the ideal time to start the project. Unfortunately in my case this particular tape player needed some immediate attention, I don’t like having things that are supposed to work... and don’t! Lol Besides I think I remember watching you tear down a computer and rebuild it from top to bottom and front to back along with a sketch a day for the whole month of October just to name a few ... now that’s discipline, right. Some of them also have a fuse in them to protect the the unit that also may be a possibility if it’s not the switch or the belt like you said. Helmet Digy Hey there Bill, How’s it been going for you buddy? These old units are pretty bad ass indeed, that is as long as they actually work and don’t just take up room that collects dust and clutter... LoL! If you don’t mind me asking did the one you saw in the thrift store work and what kind of price were they asking for it, just curious. Yes I did replace the receiver which is the one you saw in this video, the original German unit was totally shot and nothing would work due to decades of not being used. After a few months of cleanup and tracking down turntable parts and repair to the original 8-track player all is good now, the little light that comes on when the door opens for the turntable was a project to track down as well since Germany bulbs have a different screw in base for them... who knew...LoL. The Ace solo album is definitely pretty amazing and I’m not surprised to hear it was huge in your life. Thanks so much for watching buddy and always apleasure hearing from you again! Vintage Elegance hmmm.... where were you when I was thinking of a title for this video...LoL? So glad you enjoyed seeing the vintage gear up close and glad to hear you also enjoy taking things apart to see what makes them tick, or in this case go around! Yes I have to agree with you New York Groove is quite the single when it comes to describing Ace and his solo works for sure or the band for that matter . To answer your question on the switch removal I needed to remove the two holding down the switch so it can be seen a little better, the two on the side however were the ones that loosened up and was causing the switch to rock up and down instead of the arm lifting independently to make contact with the switch... all good! I wonder how many times that arm and switch had to work together since 1972 to play music for people to enjoy. 😉 Thanks so much for watching and all your very kind words in your comment, I always appreciate hearing from you buddy and look forward to so many more. Hey John how is it going brother? I appreciate you watching and all your kind words! Sounds love you got quite a deal on your player, I don’t think that you did any damage to the head as I used similar cleaning methods including even window cleaner in a pinch without any problems to the playing head. Not sure where you could have picked up the static noise from but I believe it is just a coincidence from the cleaning. It’s been a few days since your comment and you possibly and figured you have it out by now. Please keep in touch and keep me updated on this if you don’t mind, I would love to hear what you find. Hello! It’s always frustrating when a favorite tape gets tangled in the player. Unfortunately it’s not a switch problem it’s usually caused by either a dirty capstan which is what sits against the tape and drives the tape and if dirty it will cause the tape to wrap around it. The second common thing is the pressure pad in the cartridge that is right on top center and keeps the tape against the playing head and the sensor looking for the splicing foil tape to switch the tracks. When that pressure pad foam fails that tape will wander in the machine as the tape plays and sounds horrible including double tracking will occur. Hey Eric, To answer your question... yes on both counts! The description of your 8-track player is exactly what my player looks like right down to the color of wires and yes it is part of this original console unit . I know that for a fact because the person who originally purchased it gave it to me. The original receiver that powered the 8-track player was beyond repair so I swapped it out for the receiver you see in this video to play the Unisonic player. I put RCA plugs on the red and blue wires and plug into the speaker out of the receiver and a simple outlet power end at the local hardware store will take care of the power cord and as long as the unit is operational it should play if you have a receiver to play it through since you need a volume control for it. possibly a badly worn o dirty record switch li my switch was if you get a little bit of life out of it but try their first but honestly it’s something that could be in the head or circuitry…good luck my friend!

Hey Dennis! congrats on the pickup my friend! The most common trouble with these guys from sitting is the belts which doesn’t sound like it’s your problem if it plays, the other is the solenoid that changes the head height. They tend to freeze up from not using them for long periods of time, If it clicks but won’t change the solenoid may need help or a good cleanup. If you can open the unit and see if parts fell off or if anything is going on with the track selector being pushed you may be able narrow down the area and problem a little bit . If you don’t hear a click when you push the selector button it may be a bad solenoid itself but a loose wire can’t be ruled out either. Please keep in touch and let me know how you make out! It usually is because of the wrong size belt was used on it but most players have a small screw adjustment in the circuit board if you fallow the motor wires you should see it and will change the speed of the motor, a very slight adjustment is all it takes.
