In Episode 3 Season 2 of Vintage Unplugged ,Sugar Aloes talks about his experiences in the Calypso arena, gives his take on his arch rival " Cro Cro" and talks about dealing with grief upon the death of his son.
Major!! Sugar Aloes was one of my favorite calypsonians. I remember Joey played guitar for me when I sang in Point Fortin in Convent days! This is a breath of fresh air and I love that you all are focusing on the art form and putting it on the internet for those of us that are out of the country.
Sugar Aloes- sorry people but he & Cro Cro can't do Social Commentary- that is for Chalkdust exclusively. Sugar Aloes had some sweet melodies in his repoirtoire- "Roti & Talkative" & "Party Time" (1989). "I Love ❤️ Being Me" (1992)- one of my favorites where he clears up the mess/confusion between him and the Sweet Soca Man Baron. A favorite of mine would be "Nobody Love Nobody." Cro Cro and Sugar Aloes are the ones nowadays who are known for their Social Commentaries (Political commentaries).
Aloes is right! He is an artist first!! Unless he is on retainer by the PNM then he has to work and do his art. His personal and political views are his own.
No, this is about more than a paycheck. If he was a staunch supporter of his party (til he dead) it's no way he or anyone else would have thought he was even capable of doing such a show. He was definitely making a personal and political statement to whomever!! Plus, who would have conceivably approached him to do such a gig?
