Spectacular bit of metal bashing there. I can only dream of being able to do stuff like that, but once I get onto the restoration of my triumph spitfire, hopefully I'll turn out some metal bashing half as good as that! Top notch sir!

Absolutely amazing work. Please be aware that welding without gloves is a health risk. Hands and wrists suffer from skin cancer due to the ultra violet light. Take care my friends.

Hi Tom I just binge watched all your videos from the Prescott to this one I also re-watched your mini wing dent video. I have a similar dent in one of my wings so tomorrow I’m going to have a go and follow how you did that. You make it look so easy; I know I won’t find it easy but will try.

Emaculate work sir, respect! I´m not sure if people are aware of how spotless aluminium has to be in order for it to be welded (inside and out) I remember being given a torn and dented new Morgan Threewhweeler body to weld, it was powder coated inside and out, absolute nightmare!

Love watching these and the amount of information is fantastic especially the hammer and dolly work too as that looks like the magic at the end but you explain so it well! Out of curiousity, what tig welder do you use Tom. I'm just about to buy an acdc unit for car body panel work exactly like you're doing there. Brilliant, will be going to look back at your others videos, cheers.

Brilliant as usual Tom! Regarding the TIG welding, what do you reckon the panel thickness was and what was the final amperage setting? Learned a lot. Thank you!
@Metal_shaper_tom
@Metal_shaper_tom 7 месяцев назад
Hi bob .Between 1.3-1.5 mm thick. 65 amps was fine. 👍

Tom I know this is probably a real basic question, but can you explain why the wheeling machines have a upper wheel that is three or four times larger than the lower wheel. Thanks for making all your excellent videos.
@Metal_shaper_tom
@Metal_shaper_tom 7 месяцев назад
Good question! I’d said it’s a larger cleaner contact area and also a larger wheel helps smooth out the surface after you’ve been on the sand bag. I’m sure somebody on google would have a much better answer 😂

Beautiful work and finish Tom. I’m unsure as to why you hammer down the weld, having just spent so long ensure the repair patch and the original wing are so beautifully aligned. Why not just grind of the weld? Cheers, Will
@Metal_shaper_tom
@Metal_shaper_tom 7 месяцев назад
Hi will . It releases any tension within the panel after welding it also levels up both sections that could of possibly moved . The lining up and spending the time getting it right at the beginning allows for a better chance of doing a nicer weld.

You make things that are so difficult look so easy, Tom. I've been trying to restore aluminium work on a Land Rover and it's so hard to get straight. On the welding, you say 65 amps, but is that straight 2h/ 4h or are you modulating that with the pedal? I've got to the point where I can weld the sheet metal but when I dress the weld I always end up with hairline cracks. I watched Wray Schelin videos and he says you need Oxygen mixed with the Argon to prevent that. Do you use an Oxygen/ Argon mix, if not, how do you prevent cracks. Thanks.

Useful, thank you. What sort of aluminium filler rod do you use? I really need to practice my aluminium welding. The issue I have is getting enough penetration without the weld too wide. I have found using the pulsed setting helps since it slows everything down for me and I can concentrate better on what I am doing. Mind you then you have 2 amp settings to try to get right!
@Metal_shaper_tom

Hi I use 1050 it’s a 99.5% pure rod and allows you to work it without cracking
