Vintage Australian railway film - Ghan to Alice - 1978 

“Two Blokes and a car to Alice Springs”, love it, just sums up Aussie attitudes, laid back and straight to the point!

So many stories about the old Ghan and its 'relaxed' pace. One was where the conductor was scolding a woman for coming on the journey while 8 mths pregnant. She replied sternly that she was not in that condition when the train left Port Augusta.

Classic outback Australian railway journey, the real Ghan, I doubt if the driver would have had that NJ3 loco up anywhere near 8th notch on the entire journey! Seen this video somewhere else on You Tube last year. Still a classic to watch again. The new Ghan is not a patch on the original, gone all up market, took away the character of the train when the sitting cars were removed too. The new Ghan caters to "elite" tourism at elite prices. The old Ghan may have been "rinky dink" but it was one of the classic rail journeys of its time. Wonder what happened to NJ3? At arrival Alice Springs it was NJ4. Great video, thanks Bennett.

Great watch from the U.K. from someone who loves (and in better times often visited) Australia! I don't know anything about NJ locos but they look somewhat under-powered for such a heavy train, albeit upon a route with (I would guess) easy gradients. Does anyone know their output, please?

Is it narrow guage? It seems narrow but at other times it doesn't, is it editing of different footage or is there a guage/train change? Confused....
