Vintage Bar Cart Makeover From the Thrift Store: Furniture Makeover - Thrift Diving

I absolutely love this old rusty cart from the 60's and 70's! It looks like a bar cart to me, but some folks claim it's a TV cart, a microwave cart, or a tea trolley. Regardless of what it is, this cart will serve now as either a bar card or a tea cart. It was desperately in need of a lot of TLC. For only $6.99 from the thrift store, this cart turned out beautiful!

You should have primed the wood before you glued the paper down. The acid from the wood will migrate and discolor the paper. You could have also used a sealer on the metal legs to keep them from rusting again.

I am cracking up right now. We had that very same cart. We bought it as a TV stand back in the day 1973ish when a "portable" tv had a 17 inch screen. When Atari games came into fashion, we used the bottom shelf for the game console. You did a great job on the re-do!
@ThriftDiving

Hi, Serena - My parents had a huge old TV on one of these carts, too, bought in the 1970s, and we used the bottom shelf for the huge old VCR. I'm astounded that it didn't collapse under the weight of all that stuff; the shelf boards were really cheap strandboard covered with sticky contact paper. Nice work!

well the paper turns yellow because the epoxy can enter the fine fibers/pores of the paper. if you take some woodglue, pure or mixed with some water if it is too thick, roll it on the paper and let it dry. if you put the epoxy over it it can't enter the fibers/pores anymore and should stay white.
@katsleggsful

Giotto Ferrero would something like mod podge, used in decopauge work? That was what I was thinking when she first spoke of epoxy. I've seen epoxy yellow white paint over time.
@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 6 лет назад
Great point, Giotto! I didn't go into too much detail about my little side experiment with the epoxy, but this is how it went: I did several test boards, one of which I sealed with Mod Podge and then poured the epoxy. That's the larger of the board you see in the video. But it turned yellow around the edges because I didn't seal it completely. I was rushing through the test. The second test piece you saw that was all yellow, I tried a different type of spray to seal it and it didn't work. Hence, the yellowing. The third board, I did 2 coats of the Mod Podge to seal a test board and made sure to thoroughly coat it. I didn't pour epoxy on it because by that time, I realized that I could just do glass and it would look just as good. But meanwhile, I learned a lot about epoxy and LOVED the look of it, but realized that this project wasn't the best project on which to use it. The instructions also advice against using the epoxy on white backgrounds for that very reason: the yellowing. So I'll likely use it on a desk top or a cool craft project. I LOVED working with epoxy!
@rislens
@rislens 6 лет назад
If you paint the shelf white prior sticking the paper and then cover it with epoxy, would it go yellow as well? 🤔
@tahsyr
@tahsyr 6 лет назад
Giotto Ferrero that is a great tip but I want to add that you have to make sure the resin isn't yellowed with age as well, the 2 parts of the epoxy should be clear, if one of them is yellow then it's old and will cure with a yellow tinge!

I don't think that the clear coat turned turned the paper yellow as much as it made the white part transparent, and the wood-tone was showing through. If you paint the shelves white first, the clear coat should work just fine ;)
@ThriftDiving
@ThriftDiving 6 лет назад
You are right--on the second sample, the yellow was definitely due to the epoxy soaking through and the yellow of the wood coming through. But the epoxy instructions did say to not use it on white because of yellowing. Although it may have meant over TIME it will yellow. But still.... Thanks, Sierra!

Clever but the white should have been silver for consistency.

Unique is one of my favorite thrift stores. It’s where I get my “fabric” (curtain panels) for home decor projects. And sometimes I get lucky and find yards of actual home decor fabric remnants.

You are so lovely and fun to watch and learn from! I've had a cocktail cart with potential just sitting in my living room all rusty and junk for a year because I didn't know how to fix her up, so thank you so much for this!

You're so sweet, Aubrey! Get to work on that cart! You'll enjoy it, and may have a new tea station or something. ;)

We used this as a tv stand in the 70s. We also had the best channel changer. It was called "the kids". Yep, we were the channel changers!!! 🤣🤣🤣

That paper is stunning I would have never thought to put it on something like that! I think the whole thing would pop even more with the metal pieces gold, would really accent the blue :)
