Back in the day when I was a kid in school they did profiles of us by placing our head next to a sheet of good paper. It was taped to a wall. They shinned the light at us and traced the image in on that paper. Then we cut it out or they did and placed it on a contrasting color paper. I have 2 from when I was about 7 and 8. I am a painter so I am going to try and do one of those like a cameo image on canvas. Black background with white or light image of me. Or I could do it in reverse. Those 2 I have are a light background with a dark image. So fun to see what my profile was like as a little one. Fun to do with Kids! :D And they may keep it forever like I did!

Cameos do not have to have just a head. One of my most expensive cameos was a scenic shell cameo of a couple on a bridge with buildings and trees in the background. It was signed by the carver on the back of the shell. That signing is Important to look for as some of them draw premium prices.....just like in Native American jewelry, the artist makes the difference when it comes to value.

Nice video. A friend asked me to look for some in Barcelona, Spain. I knew what a cameo was but that's about it. Now I know a lot more. I might find some at some brocantes in France as well.

Nice video on one of my favorite subjects, cameos. I have many which also began with my grandmother's cameo, very similar to yours. My nicest nicest cameos are set in 18k gold carved on blue agate, onyx back so you don't see the image through the light. I have an oval pin/pendant and clip earrings. At least once a week I try to wear a pair of earrings and I wear my mom's small oval shell cameo almost all the time. One way to determine the date of a cameo is the hsirstyle. Victorian cameos typically either have elaborate upswept hairstyles or the large hats. The very early ones have Roman hairstyles and a Roman nose. Newer ones meaning 20th century have more of a button nose.

thank you for this! I have started with my 1st 3 pieces of a cameo collection. I think I got 2 resins as one of the back was flat and the other covered . My 3rd one is set in 800 grade silver and though I think it was laser made it's real shell cause it stays cool to the touch even though we are in the middle of a heatwave. You have inspired me to be more vigilant in continuing my collection!

Great video, Margaret! This was so helpful for me. It always helps me to see real and fake items next to each other with the differences explained and this was a home run. Seeing the sample cameos while you describe the differences made everything click. Did you hear the little choir of angels singing when I finally got it? LOL. The earrings use a very well-known profile used in "fake" cameos. Most probably resin, as you pointed on in the text overlay on the video.

Thank you for doing these videos on Cameos. I love them and have some since I was little girl. I will be 60 this month . I’m wondering if that would be called vintage. The Cameos, not me. If you could do a video on what is called vintage. I know100 years is called antique. ButI have heard antique is 50 years old. So, is the cameo I’ve had for about 50 years called vintage or what? I glad you like them.I’ve never met anyone else who loves Cameos.

if you are a carver, you can just make the details pop right out and make it beautiful again. It looks like an unfinished piece to me. I would just finish it. for a $2 find, it can be a great piece with a little work.

I love cameos but I just found out that cameos are not worth a lot even if they're gold but I guess it people like them a more power to us!!! But I loved your video

Yeah they are made out " Common"/ " Lesser" Gems or Shells. Hints why they are not overly expensive. And even if they are lined with gold --it would be such a small amounts that all it would add would be around $15 more to the price. (at best) But if you find one that's carved from a Rare Gem and have a Extra Wide gold boarded around it -- it could be worth a lot more.

I got a jewelry box with a cameo piece in the middle it's a small metal box ..gold plated from what I can best describe. My question is since it's set on the box how could I find out if it's real if i can't see the back since it's set on the jelwery box lid and I don't want to take it off. It was my grandmother's. ???

I have one to sell , its heavy and large, a broach , with pin it swivels around. It's made of shell, cannot see a signature in it. - how do I sell it.it is 4.5 cm down and 4 across but has heavy edging.rolled gold but could be cold dipped - I dont know. But i want to sell it. A lady in full with a swan sitting at her left, and has a material length going up around her top half. It's old.
