I found this old 1967 CB Radio Walkie Talkie at the Car Boot Sale a few weeks ago. I thought we could take a look inside it just out of interest, and while we are at it let's see if we can get it working.

From paper route money in around 1961, my first transistor radio was a used Channel Master; leather case and two or three transistors.

That was fun. I learned when I was a pre-teen in the 70's that the 3 channel and 6 channel models sold at Radio Shack in the US used the same motherboard. Got my dad to buy me a 3 channel/ 3 watt model and figured out how to add some channels. Also discovered that some 3 watt units were "derated" and could be tweaked up to 5 or 6 watts. Thanks so much for the fun video!

Nice find. Looks like someone was working on it though from the stripped screw and the missing and incorrectly placed crystals. I found that the screw extractor worked like a charm in removing the screw. Just had to be careful with it and know that I would have to replace the screw later.

would love to see more radio repairs on this channel with more explanations on how they work..Keep the videos coming Richard there great

Yes definitely, me too. The video Richard did with the CD/ Radio player together with a detailed explanation of how radios work was one of my favorites. I've got several old AM/FM radios I would like to try repairing but I still struggle to understand the concepts.

Nice, durable vintage transciever. Still working when our 'civilization' is being excavated in a thousand years

The 2 transistors by the transformer are probably the audio amps driving the speaker thru said transformer. Early transistors could be squirrely, they may be thermally bonding them together so they tracked better, reducing distortion. It has the added benefit of providing a solid ground and extra sink area. Quite cleaver on the designer's part.

Another great video as usual. I'm sure the local police are still walking up and down the road after picking you up on their computers😂

That was very informative. Some may argue that as it wasn't broken it should be on a repairing Chanell. However, I think if you are going to repair stuff, you need to have an understanding of what it does and how a 'good one' works. So, working stuff is fair game as it is still teaching how to fix stuff. For the purists though, may be you should let a family with some kids have your 'working' stuff for a few hours as I am sure that the 'working status' would change quite quickly!

Haha that may solve the problem. As I do actual repairs on this channel I have no idea when I hit record how it is going to end.

I had two of these. Operated in CB frequency band. The battery life was abysmal. Were used very little due to battery cost. Range was about 2 miles

I had a midland 3 can. W 9 er. I could shoot skip land from California across to the west coast on my mini trail 50 and was on the convoy to stalk Charles Manson w other armed cars that flushed him out of skeleton canyon in Santa Rosa rd Norwegians grade up in to Chatsworth Knolls and radioed in to rangers that caught him in a cabinet hiding by a trailer Pyle, his hair was hanging out that gave him away.

Heya, don't know anything about radio Fz or the transistor based tv would love to see a tutorial about that

I love old stuf !!! I think its not a heatsink ,,, its maybe a shield , grounded . Comments bellow guys Cheers Richard
@LearnElectronicsRepair
@LearnElectronicsRepair Год назад
My guess is still heatsink, otherwise why need the heavy piece of braid soaked in solder if not for thermal transfer?
@ralphj4012
@ralphj4012 Год назад
Guesswork on my part, but, yes, likely to be ground bonding to reduce noise (otherwise the transistor cans, especially germanium types, are effective receivers or radiators). Some have a fourth pin, marked case.
@egenestarr1986
@egenestarr1986 Год назад
so is the 455 kHz the internal unit frequency operator or is it the actual output thru atmosphere antenna signal frequency?
@brano2yt
@brano2yt Год назад
Its internal frequency for receiver amplifier, its tuned to this frquency by coils+caps on every transistor stage. By subtracting frequencies, you shift all the near, not wanted frequencies down by the same, so their percentage difference rises, so you get rid of them more easily.

Yeah, but i worked it out from the crystals rather than just knowing it. Is there some reason for 455KHz instead of 444KHz, 450KHz or 500KHz? Something to do with harmonics?
@paolomonai9511
@paolomonai9511 Год назад
@@LearnElectronicsRepair As far as I know, this Is a kind of standard like 10.7 MHz Is a standard IF frequency for a FM receiver. There are a couple of other IF standard frequencies: 60 MHz for radar receiver and 70 MHz for microwave radio link receiver. If you have a standard IF you can have a wide choice of components, mainly filters and IF amplifiers. So It Is convenient to have a frequency planning in your receiver containing standardized IF frequency. Regards from Italy.
