Vintage CENTREPIN Trotting for BARBEL in Autumn - River Wye

This video captures a full day session on the awesome River Wye in Autumn. We had one mission...
...to catch a BARBEL ON FLOAT using vintage CENTREPINS.
The video covers the basic tactics and swim choices, including multiple battles with hard fighting float caught river Barbel, handled well by the screaming ratchets of our vintage Centrepin reels (A 1950s W.R Speedia 4" narrow Drum and a 1960s Match Aerial Allcocks 4" narrow drum).

dit is geweldig om te zien,ik hoop dat ik heel veel barbeel mag vangen in nederland.en ja ik zag je vist met de korum power glide hengel,ik heb er afgelopen vrijdag 1 besteld ik moet hem nog binnen krijgen maar ik kan niet wachten tot ik mijn hengel heb om te gaan vissen op de rivieren hier in nederland.wat een geweldig filmpje is dit mannen leuk gedaan mooi gemaakt toppie ik kijk uit naar een mooi visjaar voor 2024 en niet alleen voor mij maar voor alle vissers over de hele wereld.👍

Thanks mate 😀 Its a nightmare, and especially hard in poor light conditions! In all honesty, its only possible properly when you have a dedicated camera man 🙈, a luxury!

Thanks mate 😀 It remained in the air for 8mins 36seconds by which time i managed to waddle to the beach and steer it home (thank god!) I find it very unlikely we will ever manage to get a shot like that again unless we send it up as soon as we hook up! Cheers, Joel

We do carry unhooking mats, but we unhooked the fish in the net whilst in the water not on the bank.

Great video boys and great fishing .That's a favourite river of mine and have a trip planned mid Sept 😊 . Fingers crossed the levels will be right for float fishing there and other amazing swims . Elston Steve

Hi, to Yorkshire, nice videos you guys have. I've been fishing with the center pin for about a year now. You have inspired me a lot. There are not as many places in the Czech Republic as in Yorkshire. But I have to try. The tray you made is beautiful, you gave me an impulse. I'll do it too, an original for myself.

@@albionangling Hi Joel, I have a centerpin from German DAM and two fairly decent ones from China. Unfortunately, there is little choice in the Czech Republic. Few anglers fish with a centerpin. I have two rods directly on the centerpin, 3.9 m (Decathlon) and 4.2 m (Daiwa). I live approx. 4 km from the Elbe (the largest river in the Czech Republic), it is about 68 m wide. You can't catch much now, the current behind the mountains is too big. I think about 14 days and it will be ok. In the vicinity of 50 km, there are smaller rivers Sázava or Jizera. It's been a long winter this year, so I'm hoping the weather will be better. The Czech Republic (Poděbrady) salutes Yorkshire, good luck. Eric.

Hello gentlemen, Canada here, southwest Ontario actually, I noticed you don’t harvest your fish, bravo for that. Just out of curiosity, having no idea what a Barbel is, if one had a mine, too. Are they edible just curious cause I know nothing about the species or fishing the waters of Great Britain. My local area it’s mainly steelhead a.k.a. Migratory trout. The centre pin rod I use is from a company called North Fork Composites it’s 13 feet. The real however, is British made Kingpin Arrow 5 inch. Just an unbelievable piece of kit. Anyways, great video. I’ll be watching more. Thanks for making them. Being a centre pin, not myself it’s always great to watch somebody else doing it halfway around the world.

Hi Stephen, thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. 99% of Albion's fishing is catch and release to be honest mate, we occasionally fish trout farm stillwaters if the river conditions are rubbish for dry fly and we want the thrill of a dry fly take! Barbel are not widely eaten but like a lot of these things, there are rural communities who still harvest them. I think what prevents barbel from being a widespread delicacy in Europe is two things: 1. They are supposed to taste pretty horrendous and 2. Their eggs are highly toxic and there have been cases of deaths due to severe gastro enteric toxic effects (quite a lot of academic reading around barbel cholera as its called). Safe to say, they are unlikely to become a popular item on menus anytime soon 😅. I've heard a lot of good things about Kingpins, never had the pleasure of using one myself though! Hi Stephen, it is is indeed. I can't remember the cost now but 10er from memory. Hereford have it. Woody's Angling Centre are best place to contact, very friendly and knowledgeable bloke is Woody!

What line strength do you use on the pin for barbel 10-12lb?

Hi mate, Personally I would recommend Dave Harrell Match Pro line for barbel trotting, I go for 8lb mainline and 6lb bottom. The setup in this video was perfect for playing barbel on: 15ft Drennan Acolyte Plus Speedia Centrepin Reel 8lb Line (as above) 6lb bottom 8/10/12 hook depending on bait 😀 Korum Speci 4g float (i love this float, great visibility which is what I prioritise for long trotting, often catch right at the end of the trot when feeding a swim for a long time)

@@albionangling perfect thank you! I use Korum glide 14ft for my trotting. I’ll get myself that line and prep a bit before new season starts in June. Won’t be able to do much fishing before current season ends unfortunately
