Ciao and thank you for your very nice Video, which i like to share at Telegram and at Tribel, personally i've started in 1986 with an Commodore VC20, and in late 1989 with my Amiga 500, i did my first steps into creating Desktop Wallpaper and Tracker Music.. later BeOS and Debian Linux in the later 1990's, and then used Powermacs with OS X, so right now i'm 55 and using Debian Testing, great times.. many greetings from brunswick in germany and please stay safe 🙃

Another great VCF overview video, Kate. I also watched the VCF Panel video where yourself and other RU-vidrs were interviewed, and I heard you say you're a fellow EE. I had a feeling that was the case because you always seemed to be much more informed on technical matters than just your average vintage Mac enthusiast. I would love to see a video about what sparked your interest in electrical engineering. For me, it was my love of the Mac (and computers in general), combined with a very inspirational electronics class instructor in my senior year of high school, who was a retired EE. Funny too, because I wasn't that great in math. But that career choice was a good one. It opened the door for me to move to Japan.

Just a quick note; at about 12 minutes, a U-Matic Video Tape followed by the smaller form factor U-Matic tape was displayed in the video. It was called a "beta" tape (or Betamax). Beta is a much smaller format Helical Scan 1/2 inch tape that was marketed to the consumer market and lost the format wars to VHS and was introduced in 1975. U-Matic was the first cassette format video tape using a 3/4 inch wide Helical Scan format introduced in 1969 (both produced by SONY), and was mostly utilized in broadcasting (replacing the massive 2 inch quad VTR systems) and in schools (replacing the 1/2 inch black and white open reel decks). These tapes were easier to store than a 15 inch diameter 2 inch tape reel or 10 inch diameter (not sure of the reel size) 1 inch C-format reels of tape and were easier to mail (though there were smaller 5 & 7 inch plastic reels of 2 inch tape that were much lighter than the massive metal spools and were commonly mailed with commercials). Though Betamax did lose the consumer market, it saw success in the broadcasting market being utilized in portable video cameras (betacam) and in automation where many programs were dubbed from other formats (mostly 2 inch or film). for use in a play-out system. (did I say quick note? Sorry, I did it again)

First computer in a school lab in 1987 was the Apple 2 E with LOGO computer graphics language.. Wow at Aussie computer PC Z80! If you ever find a computer with the Zardax desktop software system, then that was used in Australian schools in the 80s; Zardax is now in an Australian computer museum. The word processing software was Multi-scribe. I have a long history with chess computers. My first chess computer was a peg pocket chess computer from Tandy. I also played chess against Boris, an even earlier 80s computer that talked and said "I've got you" or "you're in trouble now". I still have my notebook with a full game score of my first win against a chess computer in 1988.

It’s nice to see this vintage stuff, but I’m really not into it. I’ve been in IT since ‘87 and I was hoping I’d have more interest in old Mac’s than the old PC’s that I used to be stuck working on that was “state of the art” but alas I don’t. Good presentation though, thank you.

Correction - AUX on apple server... AIX is IBM's Unix...
@paul_boddie
@paul_boddie 23 дня назад
It was AIX on PowerPC, which was, of course, the continuation of an architecture developed by IBM and used in IBM's own RS/6000 products. Adopting PowerPC opened the door to Apple potentially adopting operating systems from IBM and others, which they desperately needed to do, as well as sharing technology with IBM and others buying into the PowerPC roadmap. A/UX never made it beyond the Motorola 68000 family, and was only used by Apple in a server product in the form of the Apple Workgroup Server 95, which preceded the introduction of PowerPC into Apple's own products (apparently being discontinued in 1995, aptly enough).
