I've taken on a ridiculous project: to restore a vintage Sony/MCI MXP-3036 recording console.
I don't entirely know how to do this, but I'll figure it out as I go and hopefully come out with an amazing peice of vintage audio history to use in my studio.
In part 6, I get an extender card to continue calibrations, fix some issues, and replace all of the VU meter LED lights. I'm so close to moving this into my control room and getting to try tracking through it.
Special thanks to Mickey Kondakow - President - Mikadon Computer Eng for all of his assistance.

I noticed you had a new video up after the short lol. I came up working in studios that were 100% in the box. My first encounter with analog hardware outside of microphone preamps, speakers and interfaces was controlling devices through the cloud. I say that to say, I watch videos like these because of my lack of knowledge in these areas, the depth of explanation, problem-solving, visible effort exerted, and nostalgia. I'm leaning heavily towards moving into a hybrid set-up despite my wallets objections!

Hybrid is cool, but does add to complexity. If I were to start again, and with a more reasonable number of inputs, I would probably get a Cranbourne Audio R8 as my primary interface and fill it with preamps. Then I would add another 500 series rack with eq and compression.

I agree outside of mixbus processors I am looking at the R8 and the 500 ADAT model. SSL and Trident have some good options for building a 500-based channel strip that has piqued my interest. Cranborne's Harmonic EQ is also something of equal interest, I reach for saturation before EQ these days and that unit sounds amazing.@@EdgetoneStudios

@@TheGodMCDj I plan on adding their Harmonic EQs to my 500 series rack for another flavour.

This series captivates me. I think it's because of how persistent you are. Lots of the problems you've encountered so far would have caused me to throw that thing in the trash. Fantastic job! Now, if you could put everything else in your life on hold and only focus on this so we can have less time between videos, that would be great!

Well, our album is mastered so I'm about to strip apart my current desk. This has become my primary focus now. Plus, I'm also teaching you patience. 😜

Haha, thanks. I never thought anyone would say it was "fun" to watch. I expected one might say it was "interestng to watch". But as soon as I bought this I realized I had better document this, because not many people would.

Keep at it man! Everyone watching is going to be stoked when you finally move it in and it's fully operational. I'm looking at buying one of these consoles and your work is giving me an excellent insight on how they're put together and things to consider. Thank you!

Thanks! Will do. These consoles are pretty amazing. Though most consoles of this vintage probably are. I can't believe how solid and modular the construction is. And when all is said and done, it's relatively simple to understand the physical signal flow and connectivity. It sounds great, the power supply is dead quiet, and compared to other consoles of this quality and vintage they are a steal! You will probably enjoy it if you get one. I'm working on some non-audio things at the moment, but expect an update video this week!

Thanks. Although I sometimes think this project is a bit crazy, I'm also hopeful that the audio results will be amazing.

I have been following this journey and whoa a lot of work to get this console back on track. Having to completely gut it and take one module at a time was ruff to watch. I am hoping that after all of this that it provides years of really great sound and you don’t encounter anymore issues. I would hate to see you experience more issues once it’s in place.
@EdgetoneStudios

Thanks. I've put a lot of though into this and I hope I can make some amazing music on this console. But if it should fail to deliver, or have serious issues after the fact, then I am mentally prepared to shift my setup once again and purchase a more modern console.
