I'm back back back back again with another wig video! Thanks to nellhatesyou for the style request I hope this is what you had in mind! It's not a perfect replica of the sleek vintage finger wave but this was my first time trying the technique! PS the makeup tutorial of the look in the thumbnail and the end will be going up in the next week :)

This video is EXACTLY what I was looking for! I'm a hairstylist, but doing wigs for a play, and working with synthetic hair is way different than regular hair. 1920 started with damp hair and some firm setting gel, the finger waves are set by hand and left to dry with the gel flat on the head, zero volume purely 3-D waves..same technique was used for Veronica Lake's peek-a-boo bang...your technique was used by Jerry Hall during her Thierry Mugler Angel days....

onlinekyne yep I was about to say this too lol. It's an EXTREMELY difficult technique to master. So this isn't quite a vintage look that you did, still beautiful though!

Because you are steaming the hair covered with a bag you should prime your block with a plastic bag and tape just like Bobbie pinz does or your wig block might grow mould.

I would think that an uncovered block would get moldy quicker from blocking and setting soaking wet wigs than from steaming in a bag, but covering definitely helps prevent that AND lets you wipe off hairspray build up!

I love this tutorial you are talented. Because a quick suggestion. If you get some metal wave clips instead of the clips you are using in the video it will be easier to hold the finger waves in place. The wave clips are put into the ridge of each wave. They are made for finger waves. Hopefully that makes sense. The waving clips aren't that expensive most beauty supply places carry them. :)

If you wanted to you could just lightly hairspray the set, then blow dry it on high, give it a cool shot, and then relax the set. You could also just blow dry it on high for a couple of minutes and then leave it for an hour or two. I have never tried it on a wig but on clients it works well.

It looks like real flapper not a watered down version like people often do. Those girls where wearing volume and crazy curl patterns looking like they were struck by lighting. When it was slick it was extremely slick.

If your steam stops then lift your nozzle straight up over your head. That will let trapped moisture run back into the machine and steam should start flowing again. I think that will stop your leaking problem.

I've gotta tell you, I've been doing drag for five years and hair has always been a huge struggle for me- so your tutorials have been so fun and easy to follow- so thanks so much for doing them!! Also, is there any way you could do a double dutch braid tutorial- ala kim kardashian/kylie jenner style? I've been wanting a wig like that for quite some time but whenever I've tried to style it myself but I keep getting stuck. I'd love to see a tutorial if you've got the time!

you really have a natural talent to do hair ! u made only just a little mistake when u start putting bobby pins at the bottom of ur hair (9:20 ) ... if u had startet at the top in the second row, u would have nailed it perfectly, i am sure ! to blend it all over the head is the art and would have gone to that twenty style u looked for. but no problem, the finished look with make up (loved it!)and dress ,accessoires looked perfect and modern at the same time ! GZ ! ^^)

I'm guessing Miss Fame's wig is probably drenched in some kind of setting formula and pinned without pre-curling so it stays close to the head and doesn't gain volume. I've heard of it being done with conditioner on real hair and fabric softener on synthetic. Personally I like the more volumed teased fingerwave, it's more feminine and classy, softens the face more. :)

When I've done finger waved looks for Miss Fame it's always been with a wet roller set, but since she doesn't like a lot of volume so I keep the teasing to an absolute minimum and brush it out very well to keep them sleek and tight to the head. Conditioner gives an awesome light hold on synthetic hair, almost like a mousse! It's great on curly styles.

WigginOutBZ I was told the methods I mentioned by a Nigerian woman I worked with who did the finger waves in her real hair and wigs...she always smelled of Lenor fabric softener! (She said it had to be fabric softener because synthetic hair is akin to fabric and conditioner setting on real hair because it doesn't irritate scalp). Wish I still knew her now so I could tell her to try conditioner on her synthetic hair instead. :) thanks for the info :)

Hehe, awesome! I did "Sleeping Beauty" at the Ballet last year here in NYC and they used diluted fabric softener and sprayd it on the men's curly wigs and it worked really well!!! I love the smell of fabric softener too, so maybe I should start using it! haha.

WigginOutBZ whatever works. I love the smell of it too, I sometimes use it diluted to lightly mist on curtains, blankets and fabric couches as a freshener. All this and it can be used for wig styling, definitely versatile stuff - nice for those on a budget who don't want to spend a fortune on "professional products" that usually aren't that different chemically. :) I'm sure starting out drag queens and cosplayers on a budget would probably appreciate that wig spray tip :)

they're called wire mesh rollers! I use around 30 to cover the head and it takes me probably 30 minutes to an hour!

When i want realllly tight curls, what i usually do is soak the wig in boiling water, then dry it completely before letting it out again. This'll only work if you've got good heat-resistant hair though.
