Dan and Joe, these are the sorts of installments of Wafts from The Loft that make me happy I've subscribed to your channel! You've taught me to appreciate vintage fragrances. Thank you for sharing the outstanding values you've found during the shutdown. I've not had a good opportunity to purchase a vintage bottle of Eau Sauvage, and it's not surprising to discover how wonderful it smells. Dan, you said it reminds you of Eau de Guerlain. You know I was fortunate to find an 8.4 oz. flacon from the mid-1970's a few years ago and discovered why Luca Turn stated, "If you want citrus, there's nothing better out there." Btw, vintage flacons, especially pre-1980's, are another benefit of vintage fragrances. Dan, you say that vintage Eau Sauvage lasts better than Eau de Guerlain? I'll definitely try to find some. Joe, you are correct in stating, "This is not what they're selling on the shelves now." In addition, as you both stated, it's great that you found a bottle that has retained it's top notes. I was lucky enough to have the same experience with my bottle of Eau de Guerlain, and it's a splash. I'm told that is quite rare for a citrus fragrance. Dan, I follow the same process as you have with your splash bottles. I use sterile pipettes to transfer the juice into atomizers and seal the original bottle with parafilm in order to limit exposure to air. Also, I keep the bottles in the dark to avoid exposure to light. Thank you for your review of Opium and Patou. I've come close to purchasing Opium, and I will have to look for Patou, even though I know it's more difficult to find. Dan you mentioned that you asked people on Instagram about the batch numbers. Once again, Raiders of the Lost Scent is one of my trusted sources on batch codes. Dan, you mentioned the power of Opium and how it filled the loft. That brings back the memories of the 80's for me, which is another benefit to seeking out vintage fragrances, especially recommended vintages. Due to the deep memories produced by our olfactory senses, vintage fragrances serve as a sort of time machine, in that one whiff or a fragrance can immediately transport you back in time or cause to recall a specific person, time or event. Or, it can allow you to peer through a window in time to catch a glimpse of what people who live at that time were smelling. For example, when you smelled Opium, you immediately understood the message that the wearer would've been sending, especially when it's worn on skin, and in the 80's, all of the fragrances were big and powerful - those worn by women and men. In the clubs, the music was loud, the fashion statements were bold, people's lifestyles were big, and the fragrances fell in line. Think about this, a man wearing a heavy dose of Polo Green, for example, could smell a lady wearing Opium as she got close, over his Polo, which was screaming, "Hey! Check me out!" Today, many consider these fragrances too powerful to wear. Back then, they were simply the norm, and you can truly appreciate that when you smell them in vintage formulations. Youth Dew is another great example, and I have a small sample that claims to be Retro. This fragrance takes me back to my youth in the 70's for some reason. Yes. Look at the color of that juice and the color of Opium. That deep color that you find in vintage fragrances is indicative of a great experience. Dan, you referred to Patou as "ultra smooth" and "sublime", and you said that sometimes it's a "shape-shifter." Yes! Vintage fragrances offer those nuances, which we don't find in modern fragrances, even niche frags. Joe, you talked about the quality of the ingredients and how they speak for themselves. Yes. And, how they can take you down a "rabbit hole", based on your mood. Yes! That's what I find intriguing about the classics, and that's why I've come to appreciate perfumery as art with many classics marking milestones in the evolution of perfumery. Joe, like you, I have a mini of Coriolan, and the bottle has the same shape. I have not had the opportunity to find vintage Derby at a reasonable price, so I'm being patient. In addition to what I've mentioned, I've have had luck with vintage formulations of Shalimar and Mitsouko in various concentrations and formulations, but it's hard to find bottles that retain the top notes well. I found a perfect bottle of Habit Rouge EDT which was made before the bottles changed. I found vintage bottles of Pour Un Homme de Caron, Paco Rabanne Pour Homme, Halston Z-14 and 1-12, Grey Flannel, and two bottles of Polo Green, which I like more now than I did in the 80's. My advice to anyone who begins to search for vintage fragrances is to research the best formulations and learn as much as you can about identifying batch codes. It makes all the difference. I don't purchase anything if the batch codes don't look right. Find trusted sellers, and ask questions like: How did you acquire this bottle? Or, do you know how this bottle was stored through the years? If you don't get satisfactory answers, keep looking. As you both stated, finding a seller who purchased from an estate sale of a fragrance collector, someone who had good taste or someone who was the original owner. Last year, I found a seller who purchased a large lot of fragrances at an estate sale of a person who must have worked for Guerlain. I couldn't believe what they were selling. If you plan to purchase a splash bottle, try to get one that's sealed. You'll pay for that. If you can't go that route, find one that's mostly full. Splash bottles that are half full or less are risky. Like you, I've found good values on eBay. The Etsy sellers I've seen are priced higher than eBay. Last, beware. If you find a vintage formulation and smell it, you can easily get hooked on finding more, because of all the benefits you and I have mentioned. It's surely addicting and takes self-control not to dive in too deep. Thanks again for this fine installment! I am eagerly anticipating my Waft from the Loft order. I suspect that "Happy Sniffing" will be ringing in my ears on the day it arrives. Take care!

Vintage vermeil for men can be had for 20 bucks on ebay. Discontinued now so i dont think it will last long at that price. Also vintage escada pour homme i found for 80 bucks for 40 ml. That one is getting harder and harder for find but up there with patou pour homme as far as holy grail fragrences go. If you want an interesting hack i found thanks to Thomas at EarlyGreek you can score ma liberte from jean patou. Get the edp if you can it is karleo's work so you know its quality and it will remind you of patou pour homme prive for a tenth of the price. Marked towards women but it is actually leaning masculine imo. Awesome awesome fragrence! -Ramsey

I got a 1995 bottle of Guerlain: Un Air de Samsara. A minty/citrus blast and then it settles into warm weather florals and that beautiful sandalwood. It's been my favorite find of the year. I found a back up because I loved it so much. And also a 1998 bottle of Dior: Poison. I sprayed once when I first got it but need to wait until the weather cools down. The one perfume I've experienced where the scent got stronger after I sprayed. I think it's going to be a monster........

My best vintage buy was a double box of Kouros Paris Edition (the first one ever, probably from 1982) containing 50ml of EDT and 50ml of After Shave. I paid 120 Euro for that.

You totally nailed it: If Roja would release Patou for £1500 everyone would buy it. It's that good. Fougere, chypre, oriental, boozy, it's got it all, such a star. I get exactly what you mean by shapeshifting, it changes so many times depending on the wearing.

Thank you for recognizing Youth Dew as a chypre. It’s categorized as an oriental, which it is, but few people call it the chypre that it is. I also think it’s damn similar to Chypre Palatin, not the same but in the same zip code.

Very interesting and enjoyable Gentlemen. I purchased a bottle of Ralph Lauren Chaps vintage (not the awful reissue) which was in with two other scents and being sold in women's perfume, got ti for a tenner.. A rugged 70s classic... I also purchased a beautiful vintage aftershave called Puig Sybaris for £8. A rarity and quiet beautiful scent from the 80s. Both lost some top notes, but they dont half last well and are quite hard to find too.. I think some scents even vintage can be picked up cheap because they have slipped under the radar for so long, yet they are out there.

Great stuff gents, some excellent finds👌🏻 The deep vintage Eau Sauvage is a real treat. It’s all I will wear now the current stuff is lacklustre in comparison. Patou and Derby are outstanding also. I probably should buy backups of these before they vanish. Haven’t smelt the new formulation of Derby. Look forward to more rare vintage finds in the future.

I have that same bottle design of Eau Sauvage EDT and it's a 2002 bottle. They very well could have had that design in the 1980's. The top notes in my 20 year old juice were diminished. Surprising yours wasn't given Eau Sauvage's citrus-forward DNA. And interesting how you say Opium isn't too different than Chypre Palatin. I have Aramis JHL, which is inspired heavily by Youth Dew, Cinnabar, and Opium, and I compared JHL to Chypre Palatin. Chypre Palatin is my favorite amber scent ever.

opium drew a lot of inspiration from youth dew. estee lauder has always insisted that opium rips off from her perfume. a year later after the release of opium, she released cinnabar to answer opium, which is almost identical to opium. cinnabar is a slightly shyer sister version of opium. they both smell extremely similar to one another. patou pour homme and derby guerlain used to be very expensive and very hard to find. not anymore . now they both have been relaunched in a different bottle. of course they're not as good as their version in the 80's, but they are close enough not to justify for hunting down and paying outrageous price for the vintage bottle.

For us the fragrance was about the process as much as the product. We wanted to learn rather than make money (we’re not making any money). Sarah loves to teach, and is happy to be utterly transparent with her process, so that we were able to lean and share. Storytelling is also absolute central to all of her perfumery, and we were more interested in story rather than specific notes (as is probably clear from our videos about the making of it). Also, she’s clever, fun and interesting.
