I had a vintage robot robot with the Hypno eyes on the bench for repair and thought I would share with you all. Made in Japan and sometimes called ROTO ROBOT or ROTOMATIC ROBOT. Powered by 2 D cells, the robot can walk, Stop, rotate the body with Guns extended flashing and clicking.

Man i remember when my only tin robot, the super astronaut, had the non-spinning issue because the middle spacer was rounded, either from top or bottom,i could never solder it because it was made of alluminum, i got it remade in my school, and it rounded again in a matter of days, just last year i ended up 3d printing one and screwing it to the torso, after like 2 years of the damn thing being disassembled, had to remake almost all tabs, the damn thing now works again. The only issue with it now that has always had is the doors never stay open when the robot is spinning, like if something was off centered or worn

Yes the door open and gun shacking are done by the spring loaded large gear. The small brass gear that goes up and down, when up that is roto matic mode nd when down that is walk mode. The small brass gear will get worn at the bottom end do to the mechanical design of the door opening gear that is spring loaded. When it jams or reaches the end of the teeth that is when the door and guns should be open but since that makes the small brass drive gear skip a tooth it wears it out kind of fast. Not designed to last very long. Some of the robot do it differently and will last a long time.

That brought back memories. I had that exact same robot, except for the hypno-eyes. Mine just had a stock astronaut face. But other than that it was identical, and was the robot I played with the most.

Here is how I repair these gears, seems to work for my personal robots - I use a lathe to machine a band to go over the collars. It has to be the right tightness, but it seems successful so far!

I have used brass tubing to do this in the past, sometimes I have to machine down the color on the plastic gear to wedge into the brass sleeve. Sometimes the crack in the teeth is just too much to mesh properly even with a metal sleeve, or so I have found.

I have the hoirkawa robot that has the doors on the chest that open. My problem is it use to walk, the gears looked perfect, it did work perfect momentarily.. so I replaced both gears with the same type you mention in this vid. I can very easily get it to walk if I manually turn the gear with my finger, but once I put the gear that mates to it and try to turn it, it binds it will not turn, I put it together to check it that way as well, you can here it bind and sometimes skip.. but this should move freely by hand, once I turn the gear by hand by the shaft correct?? I also checked the rods in the legs they are strait.

Yes it should freely by hand. So either the new gears are not mating or aligned right or the drive shaft from the gearbox is slipping on the gear up inside the gearbox.

@@Robothut ok thanks..I tried to mesh them instead of just dropping the shaft onto the the axel gear and then lights turn, it does want to turn by hand then stops, I do have a bad spot, very minimal but it seems to effect it, I ordered new gears, I will update after the install. Your video gave me the courage to take the robot apart, that I had for nearly 30 years..I also got the same robot as shown in this video, when testing it I used one D battery with 14 gauge wire I had to determine if it was the switch not working, it was, so I put 2 D batteries in the robot and jumped the positive to neg, the robot spun around very fast,so much that I thought, it would just cause it to fall if I made the permanent fix using 14 gauge, I ended up using the original wire and it spins just as it should, I was using cheap Panasonic batteries..I like the idea you mentioned on converting A size batteries, I am going to do that.. keep up the good vids, it helps a lot of guy and gals who just were to afraid to open these robots up, ..

can you super glue the tabs back on? that is my reason why i dont take mine apart to fix him cuz i fear breaking the tab

No the tabs if broken off are history. But you can make new tabs that are longer and solder them on from the inside. The drawback to this is the heat from soldering will discolor the paint on the outside.
