I always thought this was a strange train for the US Navy, with its yellow switcher and white box car. Until I saw a RU-vid video of the ACTUAL train in the same colors. This model was truly based on a real train that is still operating today. There is no submarine or crane, but it's close.

I think I just watched the exact same video. I couldn't believe it and immediately I searched "Lionel Navy Trainset," which led me to this video. It's a mixture of different feelings when something you thought your entire life was just a toy turns out to have a real-life counterpart.

This train set was made in 1994. I was lucky enough to receive it for Christmas of '95. You forgot to honk the horn!

ah yes, the days before fastrack and shitty lionchief and bluetooth control. I have a 1999 NYC Hudson Freight set with rail sounds. Its in its original box, minus the track that came with it. Love the set so much. I wish Lionel stuck with transformer control today, instead of wireless operations.

I bought this train for my son (at birth) in late 1994. Just pulled it back out of the box after YEARS of hibernation. Works well, EXCEPT the horn does not work. I have switched wiring, but still no sound...any suggestions from anyone?

They had bad boards. I have a set I bought for my dad. And an engine I bought for myself years later. The one I bought for myself would only go in one direction and then it burned out totally.

@carrolllindler9348 the one that was new that I gave to my dad has never been run. It was put in a case. The one that ran forward only and stopped I dropped off at my friends hobby shop..it was there for a year and they could not get a board. So low and behold a woman needing money sold him a very used lifeguard train. He asked me if I wanted it. I said yes and give me my navy engine. So I switched the shell. The only difference is the life guard frame does not have the white zebra strip. So I did not exactly change the Board I changed the shell.

I’m cringing-my dad is a past president of the TCA and would have beat me as a child if I grabbed a car along the sides (kidding!) but it was always touch it on the top and bottom. 😉
