I use a Marantz 2245 to show you how to troubleshoot vintage stereo equipment including receivers and amplifiers when you have no audio output and the speaker relay will not engage. This video can be used with other models of vintage Marantz, Pioneer, Sansui and others to help trace down similar failures. Fewer and fewer technicians are remaining that can service vintage audio equipment. With some knowledge vintage stereo problems can be simplified.

I am not a electronics repair guy, but I fixed my Samsung TV using your techniques of tapping on the boards and resoldering. My problem was the transformer from the heat cycle broke the solder joints. Desoldered with a ribbon and resoldered and bam fixed. Also cleaned everything inside as the original owner used a coal stove and the inside was just coated like dust paint inside the unit. The TV is still working perfectly. The age is roughly when the flat screen TV come on the market, my friend just wanted it gone. He paid 4K for the unit new. I scored for sure. Love your video, lots of great information for the novice who understands electronics to some degree but not totally.

True about the fasteners. I bought a box of cheapo ziplok sealable baggies. Each screw (or group of identical screws like "face plate") removed gets put in a bag and labelled with sharpie. Sometimes a project might go on the back burner for a few days, weeks or months. Saves a ton of time in that situation.

Buna dimineata! Ce rol are acel clinc?

Great video. I have a similar problem (intermittent) with my Pioneer SX 1980. It was working, then both channels totally silent. After a few minutes tried it again and it worked for about a minute, then same problem. A few weeks later tried it again and it played at least an hour but could only get FM above 100 Mhz. Some kind of gremlin in this thing for sure. Also, some genius has taped two little magnets to one of the relays (protection or speaker I'm not sure). Both of these relays are on the PSB. I'm considering getting the re designed PSB for this thing from Canada just to upgrade it. Didn't mean to write a book so thanks for the video.

Thanks for this great video! It got me to thinking. Of course, it only makes sense to prophylactically replace all the electrolytic capacitors in 40+ year old gear. But wouldn't it also make sense to do the same with solder joints?

Your welcome and thanks for watching. Solder joints can fail over the year's but it's more on a case to case basis. Electrolytic capacitors are different. They are all going to fail at some point.

Hello! Sorry if my english is not good! Thank you from the bottom of my heart! I had AKAI AM-U310 stereo integrated amplifier from 1982 till few days ago. This amplifier means a lot for me. Before it died out it was connected to PC, I was listening music at a relatively high volume and my PC is setted to enter in standby after no commands is performed and HDD and monitor stopped. In that moment I've heard a big boom sound and no sound in speakers after I've exit in standby. I stopped the amplifier and turned on and the click start sound no longer appeared and no sound in speakers. Also sometimes I had sound only on right channel together with a crackling sound from speakers on left channel. All being said you think that STK / STK's is broken? I want to make this amplifier to work as good as it can be. I'm sort of audiophile person. Kind regards!

Hi, I have a Marantz model 2245. I turn it on, the lights in front come on and I hear a click from the small component with a clear cover I am not sure what it's called. I picked the Receiver up from someone who had several components hooked up to this unit. I bought it home I removed the top cover and it was just loaded with dust. I blower the unit out but still was pretty dirty. I turned the Amplifier on the light in front came on and I heard click sound. I hooked speakers up to the unit and no sound coming from the unit at all. I also tried to plug a turntable into the back of the amplifier no power. I checked the fuse in the back of the amplifier it seems to be ok. Not sure what to do next. Can you give any suggestions?

I'm in for the long haul. No point buying this old stuff and you don't know how to fix it, especially the cheap 80's black plastic stuff. Pick up some amp or receiver for say $30, I'm not really wanting to spend $100+ bucks to get it running, but doing the work myself makes it fun, and you can keep those cheap little things rolling in the door. Ok, thanks for another great video.

My 2245 does still have sound but it's been reduced by about 75% to 80%. Let me explain.. I got a new entertainment center so my stereo was unhooked for transferring it. My helper decided he was going to hook it up even after I told him not to touch the connections but to just put the unit on its shelf. I went to the bathroom and just as I got back to the living room I heard a very loud POP from my speakers. He had hooked it up anyway but had it and the CD player powered up when he reconnected the RCA cords. It still works (and now only on mono) but it's won't get louder than what a normal conversation would be. Any ideas on what he wrecked? Side note I'm disabled and he was my PCA - "Personal Care Assistant" and was only supposed to do the lifting but not the connecting of the system.

I'm sorry about your 2245. It's very difficult to say what may of happened. As you know you should have the power off before hooking up individual components. I'd google "vintage audio repair" and see if there is someone locally that could take a look at your 2245. It is also certainly possible that your speakers were damaged. If you have another piece of equipment that you could hook up to your speakers to check them that would be a good idea.

The only other equipment I have here is a boom box and I dont think it would power the bigger speakers. Granted they are only vintage Utahs but surprisingly they sounded great. My Marantz Imperial 7s are in storage and I cant get them until spring because the storage facility doesnt keep the area well plowed out so theres too much snow in the way. A couple of things - I saw where you had your red probe checking for the DC bias differential, but I'm not sure where you had the black probe - was it chassis ground? Also, if you'd care to comment, I got a "junked" Pioneer SX 626 and built a dim bulb tester to see if it had a big problem before I went further. I attached 8 ohm loads and turned it on. The Dim bulb flashes bright every second or so. Is that a shorting capacitor? Is there something that you can tell me to check? Just found your channel and subscribed today, I find your approach to be useful for someone like myself who is just getting into this and wants to stay safe and have fun.
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 4 года назад
Yes, the other probe was to ground. Good job building a DBT. It's always a good idea to power unknown electronics with one. It appears something is drawing excess current but usually when that is the case the bulb will burn bright and stay bright. Are you using a 60 watt bulb? If your using something higher try that. I had a Yamaha amplifier years ago that did something similar and I was using a 100 watt bulb. Not saying that's your issue but it gives you something to try. If that's not it it's almost got to be power supply or output transistor related but with your issue where it appears you have a current surge and then it relaxes it's hard to say. Usually if it's a blown output transistor the current draw doesn't come and go. A shorted rectifier in the power supply the same. I'm glad that you feel that my video's can help you out and thanks for subscribing. Mostly what you will find is experience is the key. Some of this stuff can be difficult but once you get into it you will see a lot of it is not that tough.

I have a question. My Marantz 2235B makes a loud popping sound in the speakers when I turn it off. It is completely original. Do you think it might be a capacitor in the output stage? or is it normal? This is the first Marantz ive had and I don't know anyone else with one to compare with. Thanks for the video, it was very informative.
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 4 года назад
Your welcome I'm glad that it was helpful to you. Your 2235 should be silent when you power down because the speaker relay should disengage. You could have some excessive DC Voltage on one of your speaker outputs causing the pop. I did a video on how to check the DC Offset without taking off your case ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZvBoxhpa-v8.html if you have a digital volt meter. If you are able to check that and it looks fine then it could be the speaker relay itself or something on the protection board. If the DC Offet looks high then it's probably a amplifier issue. It could even be your power switch arching. There are many different possibilities and yes old capacitors are the number 1 cause of vintage audio failure. I hope this helps you out. Good luck with 2235 and thanks for watching.
@Andrewatnanz
@Andrewatnanz 4 года назад
@@vintageaudioaddict The DC offset is good however I noticed the relay does not make any sounds so I will look into that next. Are the two large capacitors usually the first to go? Thank you very much.
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 4 года назад
@@Andrewatnanz Your welcome. I wouldn't say any particular capacitor is more likely to fail then any other. Really all of the capacitors as old as your 2235 has are suspect. Good job noticing the relay and good luck tracking down the problem.

It's too bad you don"t show the repair .Plus you didn't really explain why if u have a bad solider connection that it would cause 36v and not 0v
@bblackdogg4352
@bblackdogg4352 3 года назад
Yea, it's pretty mysterious how the 37v power rail could make its way to the audio out at any of the h001 thru h004 outputs by way of an open solder connection. In fact..it can't. Only a shorted transistor e to c or a shorted resistor or cap(never seen that) would send power rail DC to the output audio path. I guess that's why the repair wasn't shown.
@bblackdogg4352
@bblackdogg4352 3 года назад
Maybe possible that a transistor load resistor lost its path to ground and sent rail to the base of one of the final output transistors - then on to the audio out and picked up by speaker protect ckt.
