In this "comparison" video, I am riding two of my favorite early 1980's muscle cruisers - Honda's 1980 CB900 Custom and Honda's 1982 CB900 Custom. Though these bikes are the same model from Honda, updates and options make them look, sound, and feel so different! Come along with me to experience the sound and feel of early 1980's muscle!

My first serious bike was a 1980 C back in 81. Sold it when i moved to Canada in the mid 80s. Im looking at buying an 82 in real nice shape for $1800 runs nice too. Started riding on a 900C so its only right i finish it on a 900C too. Wonderful machines the Honda fours nothing quite compares imo Great video

Sounds like a good price for a nice-running example!

Mine was the 81, with the 10 speed transmission, it wasn't actually 10 speeds per se, but the transmission had a low high range splitter. I found that low range was best for everything except highway cruising, but the high range also worked in town as well, with the exception of having to slip the clutch a little more on takeoff. Never had one problem with my CB Custom

Nice! Since getting these back on the road, they have been trouble free. I was out riding one yesterday - still a nice ride!

I used to have a sissy bar like that on my CD175 in 1972. My father was appalled by it. Thought I was trying to turn the bike into a scooter. Interesting review.

I'm not sure exactly why I left the sissy bar on the 1980 - it's usually the first thing I pull off a bike. Somehow I don't hate it on that bike.

THANK YOU for making this video! I'm putting together a chopper based on the 82 900C and have been picking up a lot of old parts off ebay. The differences are subtle and it helped to hear about some of them here. Let me know if you'd like a PDF of what I've put together from the old Honda Service Manuals.

The brakes on my wife's 82 are surprisingly good. She came from an 80 GL1100 with single piston calipers, and the difference is night and day. I think it's the best stopping bike we have, and we have several bikes with dual discs in front including an M109R.

The brakes on the 1980 CB900C required a major upgrade as soon as I put it back on the road (pads, lines, rotors). I just added Spiegler lines to my 1982 CB900C this past week. While the brakes weren't bad before, they are amazing now. Stay tuned for a future video.🙂

My 81 is single pot calipers front and rear, but that massive rear disc REALLY puts a stop down. I'm swapping a full GL1200 front end into mine, already did the GL1100 rear alloy with 140 tire (had to clearance the driveshaft tube some, would have been easier to just use the GL1100 swingarm), and will be upgrading to GL1200 twin pot rear caliper and arm and making adapters to use CBR900RR front calipers and some sportbike rotors (BIG discs)

Great comparison Jon. Would you detail a little more about the Spiegler lines you used? Were they a custom order and if so, what part numbers? On their website they list the 82 CB900C as the only CB900C option but it links to a blank page. Maybe the 750 uses the same lines? Thanks for the content.
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 2 года назад
I had to measure the original lines and then special order them. What year and model is your bike? Spiegler has a good set of directions on exactly how to measure the old lines and order the custom lines. I would recommend aluminum fittings with black coating if you want a stock look.

@@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 My bike is the same. 1980 CB900C. Did you replace the line from the front master cylinder to the 2-way joint as well as the individual lines to each caliper or just the lines from the joint to the caliper? Thanks again.
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 2 года назад
@@jaymesims3070 I replaced all three lines in the front. I have the stock handlebars and this is what I ordered for the 1980 CB900C: (qty 1) upper line is black with aluminum banjo fittings, fitting 1 is 20 degree bend, fitting 2 is straight, total length is 19" (qty 2) lower lines are black with aluminum banjo fittings, fitting 1 is straight, fitting 2 is straight, total length is 21.5"

Do you have any recommendations for seats? I have one that totally shot for the cb 900C and another for god knows what bike, but neither are usable. all I can find online is café racer style seats and I personally hate them lol.
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 2 года назад
Both of my seats are stock. Have you checked with Corbin? You can still get the reproduction stock seat covers online. Maybe with one of those a local upholstery shop could replace the foam?

When you say geared different, are we talking different rear end ratios, or different gears in the gearbox?
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538
@jonsmotorcyclerescueandrev3538 2 года назад
I would guess different gears in the transfer case or rear. Either way, the 1982 is geared taller and revs lower at speed.
