I regret essentially giving away my Ice Age and Mirage collections years ago. Haven't really tried to reassemble it, but every now and then I come across loose cards, and get that nostalgia hit.
One can truly see your love for the game through your eyes and voice 🙂 I too hold dear memories of a long time ago, when I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh with my friends as a kid. Sadly that went away because of similar reasons as you: many felt too "adult" to be playing a "kid's game". Time passed by, I grew older, but I never forgot those happy moments. In a way to reexperience those moments, I started playing magic, with my friend, this very year, after a very, very long and dark period of my life, and found a little community at my local game store shortly after. Sadly the shop closed just a month later. I was very sad, even if I experienced that place for just a few weeks. People were happy to see me, welcoming and joyful. You professor give out the same vibe. I learned this way that the essence of Magic is not the cardboard pieces you use, nor the game in itself, it's the people you play with, the memories you make and the connections you develop. In other words, it's not magic, it's the actual gathering. And that of course is the same for any other game that brings people together. I truly hope to one day find another community, because this to me felt like family, like I belonged somewhere. And to all players of the world I say, keep being proud, don't listen to so called "adults", and keep doing what you love.
If you haven't, I suggest trying mtg arena. It's missing a lot of that community aspect, but just having a place to play mtg is nice and reminds me of better times.
That was a really lovely story about your younger days and why you enjoy opening these older packs to try to reclaim a fun part of your past. It made me long for something I miss from my older days when I loved magic so much I skipped a class or two in college just to play more (I know bad me, but we do silly things for love sometimes.) I wish I could get a group of friends I could play for hours with again, especially playing casual 60 card constructed planechase. That's been my favorite format forever and while I'm glad people enjoy using it to punch up commander sometimes, I'm still sad I don't think I could ever go to any kind of mtg event or store ever again and get a game like that ever again. I miss when commander was just another way to play casual multiplayer magic, and not the only format anyone plays.
This video was so wholesome and pure, I'm thankful to have experienced the opening of old packs. I'm also happy to hear someone not complain that they didn't get anything out of an older pack, rather, the joy of being able to use those old cards was refreshing.
This may be my favorite video you've ever done, Prof. Thank you for taking a fairly new Magic player into the retrospective mind of a longtime player. Although new to the game, I have become quite fond of my little cardboard rectangles and it's nice to see a similar appreciation and the presentation and delivery were superb. I know completing that binder is a long road to walk, but I wish you many moments of happiness in your journey...
Thanks for sharing, I didn't grow up playing Magic, so it is neat to see you go through older packs. I'm glad that you've been able to recreate your collection over time and find decks to play some of those cards.
Thanks Prof, it takes me back to cracking & playing with newly opened revised back in the day, back then I played with them all .. i think it was a stack of over 200 cards initially, no sleeves, drinks & pizza on the table as we stayed in at college as it was cheaper to get pizza delivered and drinks in, and play magic rather than go to the college bar, how times have changed! lol ;)
Your monologue in the opening moments were spoken with such reverence, I can tell the quest to rebuild your Revised collection is something that you find genuine joy in and means a great deal to you. Godspeed on your quest, Professor. I hope you one day, complete your set. ☺️☺️☺️ EDIT: Nevermind, I take it back because your heartfelt gratitude made me cry 🤣😂
That opening dialogue about having a complete revised set and then selling it because of “becoming an adult.” That spoke to me. I did the exact same thing.
Mercadian Masques might be might 2nd favorite older set, but Scourge is my absolute favorite to this day. Recently bought 4 at my LGS, which weren't as expensive as some older packs, but for mint condition Scourge cards it was personally worth it for me, more so than any of the mystery or collector packs recently.
That looks like my kind of misprint. Would fit perfectly with my Golgari cards with that black tinge. Great video prof, always love seeing these old card frames. Reminds me of my original collection I've mostly rebuilt myself.
A kid at one of my LGSs won an event and got to choose between a current standard booster box and a revised booster pack (when they were about $100). He picked the pack and... well, apparently someone back in the day at WotC thought it would be _highliarious_ and/or oh-so-useful to have some land-"jackpot" packs that were just all basics to help people get the lands they needed for their decks...
Not even really an MTG player, but subscribe for the nostalgia... Anyway, just wanted to say that I think you are a really good dude, and I really enjoy supporting this channel because of how much effort you put into doing good for others. Cheers.
Hello Prof. I'm a new patron and a new magic player. My husband has played for years but other than the beautiful art, I didn't have much interest in it. Recently he asked me to organize his cards for him (his 10,000+ card collection). As I did, I became more and more fascinated with the story, then the mechanics, then I just fell in love with the entire game. My first deck was a mono black Braids, Arisen Nightmare deck focused on drain and gain. I am proud to say that I won my first game against my husband and I did it fair and square. He has too much love for the game to not play it properly. I actually beat him 2 out of 3. He gives me hell about it, but he's also very proud. I wanted to say thank you because watching your videos has also taught me so much. Your kindness is astonishing and you keep it light and fun. Please keep inspiring more people to just enjoy the game.
I'm glad you like to play with the Revised basics. I don't play with those, but I DO play with Urza's Saga basics in many decks because that's when I started playing. In fact, I probably need to look around for another ebay listing of 20 of each to replenish. Seeing them makes me feel so good.
That was really visceral to me. I started at the end of Unlimited and poured a lot of money into the Revised set. I wasn't able to get any Arabian Knights where I lived but I bought a ton of Antiquities and Revised. I swear that I could smell what the printing odors put off by those cards. I had gotten my first reliable car around that same time and put a few of the common and uncommons in the back window of my car. After about 6 months of being in the sun almost all of the color faded out of them so that the black writing on the cards were all that remained. I had a Hurloon Minotaur that looked like an albino. It was awesome. I might be wrong but I think I ended up trading it for a dual land when dual lands were still in print.
Jesus, had to pause the video and comment on the amazing book series that is the death gate cycle. Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman are amazing authors. I love seeing book series I recognize in your videos, really appreciate it. =)
I have been slowly getting boosters from sets I an nostalgic for, one booster at a time. Luckily i got Urza's Legacy before the price jumped that high! I got one each of the three "Urza's" boosters when they were half the price they are now.
Credit Voucher... what a fun and flavorful card that would never be printed today. That effect would now be attached to an indestructible 5 mana 6/6 green beast with reach and deathtouch that triggers upon ETB and every attack.
I was not old enough to play Magic during revised, and I mean I wasn't mature enough to grasp the rules. Plus my parents didn't approve of the game. But when I got into Magic, a few years later, I got to play with the cards that weren't brand new that my older friends had. I remember making decks with Revised, broken apart Zakk v. Kazz decks, and the unique cards from Arabian Nights. They were running the newest cards from the newest sets. I don't remember playing with power 9, or duals, or the rarest and most powerful cards from those early sets. All my nostalgia is from playing a proto version of pauper or cube.
Remember kids, variance is a tough mistress so unless you're buying pallets of cards at wholesale prices don't bother opening boosters (except for draft) because you will never come out ahead in the long run.
That's if and only if you do that to find specific cards. If you're doing that for fun and you have disposable income for that, opening packs is perfectly fine.
I had (and luckily still have MOST) of my full set of Revised. I did sell all the duals, but have gotten some of them since...but I had a flood that destroyed my multiple full sets of all the Urza's block sets, Tempest, Exodus and other sets from that era.
Oh yay! A new Tolarian video. I love the music in these videos. And how can it get better than opening old boosters. If only we could time travel. I would buy so many! I remember getting Magic cards in magazines too. I guess they don’t do that anymore.
I always forget this too but wheel of fortune in revised is worth more than some of the duals now. I had the same regret and piecing a set back together process a year or two back, wheel always surprised me because I had gotten mine for the 5 or 6 bucks level it was at for like 24.5 years. Even now at like $250 it's so hard for me to stop thinking of it as an under $10 card.
I *[YOGMOTH]* LOVE FORK! It's such a versatile card. You can use it to storm multiple opponents to death at one or 1v1 twice as fast. You can even use it for Ancestral Recall to draw 6 cards instead of 3. It's like salt. It makes anything better.
I remember back in 2007 a shop in my town sold old boosters from homelands for 3 bugs. We bought some because nobody knew the value of them. We should have kept them close but we and the shop owner had any idea about the worth
Went through this with my pokemon cards. So many memories that I just threw away. What a regret. Being an adult doesn't mean that we have to cast aside our childhood hobbies. Not much to do about it now, except rebuild!
Not a Magic guy at all but this was a great video... love the passion... really enjoy watching your stuff... I don’t understand any of it but it’s enjoyable
Save that for a post-pandemic draft! I've heard that while Fallen Empires is considered a pretty terrible set and had its value printed into the ground, the actual draft environment of the set is really something to experience (if only once, lol).
@@KingBobXVI I looked up the price of a sealed booster box and it's on the rise, so I'm just gonna keep it. I already have plenty of fallen empires cards anyway.
In general, but it depends on the seller and their reputation. I bought a few revised packs earlier this year and they were shipped similarly, and I wanted to actually see how to search them. Basically, what I learned is that if the pack is in pristine condition like the ones I got or the one Prof got, they're most likely not searched. It's not hard to read the top card through the white frame of the pack, but the rare is the fourth card down which means you have to sort of finagle and shove around individual cards in the pack which causes significant wear in the packaging, turning the white sections black around where the card corners are. While I don't necessarily recommend buying loose packs, there _are_ sellers out there who aren't complete scams. Of the three I got I searched two, and by chance the second had a Savannah, which was pretty exciting. If you do want to try for it though, make sure there are pictures of the listing, that the packaging is absolutely pristine, and that the seller has a good reputation.
@@KingBobXVI this is correct, the coating on the packs is super sensitive and if you're a first time searcher struggling, you can flake off material or crease the pack leaving a hint it was searched. But there are pros at this and I don't trust anything unless it's taken from a sealed box on front of me. Really glad you got a Savannah, congratulations!
Professor, that Food Chain misprint is definitely something a misprint collector would be interested in. There's a Facebook group "#MTGRarities: Major Misprints, Test Prints, Oddities." I'm sure group members would have a lot of interest in the card & if you're looking to sell, would pay a nice premium for it. Hope this helps!
Prof, any chance you'll do some videos where you open every MTG pack, going as far back as revised? Tragic MTG has a great series where he did exactly that, even opening Legends and Antiquities!🤩
Does anyone else think that the Revised pack was searched at some point? I saw the creases at the top white part of the wrapper and thought immediately that there is nothing of value in there. And yup - was right. You should NEVER buy loose packs that have the old wrappers with white tops/bottoms unless it is from someone you know, or from a box you watched being opened. You will get hosed.
(evil)Prof: let's trick our enormous viewer base into sending us the revised cards we don't yet have. Prof: I would never try to take advantage of my position of privilege like that. (evil)Prof: what!!! that's what privilege is for. Prof: the answer is no and that's final. *several weeks pass* (evil)Prof: why don't you make the joy of nostalgia part of this video by casually mentioning that you are collecting revised? Prof: that's brilliant. see the kind of ideas you can come up with when you're not trying to be evil? (evil)Prof: *laughs maniacally* Prof: what? (evil)Prof: what?
Wow....this must've felt really nice prof. I recently went back to Yu-Gi-Oh and started reading/playing with the old cards, back when the game wasn't so blistering fast yet, and it feels really addicting, in a good way. Congrats on the cards. Actually before I forget: You seem to talk about Pokémon sometimes on the channel but I never saw any YGO content, I was curious why is that? Nothing against you if you don't like, we all have our own tastes. It's just genuine curiosity.
