Hey dieselducy, nice find there. That elevator seemed remarkably fast and quiet as well. I was very impressed. I also don't remember seeing those touch-sensitive buttons before, or else they weren't pointed out as such. For a nice old elevator I found, check out my recent Westinghouse video. Thanks.

Actually, I tried some objects on my HD radio, and it seems metal objects will work, provided bare metal touches both you, and the button. I think heat-sensitive buttons may also work with ESD (electro-static discharge), hence my findings. A plastic pen will not work, metal ones might. Key should as well.

You should go to the Hilton hotel in pittsburg they have a bank of westinghouses modernized by otis.

It's when you touch the button without having to push the button.

These are still original! WOW!

@bigclivedotcom Explain: (1) Heat Tubes in the original design. (2) Why using a metal object takes time to register a hit. MODERN-DAY buttons DO use a conductive, reistive element, which when heat is applied, doesn't actually change resistance enough to trigger. A fire right there, it might. I believe you're talking about Resisitive buttons. I DID have the metal object thing slightly wrong. It'll take time to conduct enough heat for the older buttons.

these old classic otis lexan elevators with the touch sensitive buttons are my favorite kind of elevators but lots of these elevators are NOT original anymore most of them have been upgraded by otis gen2 epco gal and all other elevator manufacturers out there it's just sad to see these old school original style elevators get ruined with new fixtures

Unfortunately, I have not had the pleasure of experiencing elevators like this before! The best I got was an Otis Lexan and an Otis "Pre-Lexan".

@PinePowerLI They are supposedly a "fire hazard", however, they have fire service. I guess they could be, but still.

wow. those touch sensitives are marvelous. something that doesn't move can't break.

Heat-Sensitive Buttons. They don't work if you don't use body heat. Use a pen, pencil, keys, or other foreign object, it won't work. This is also one of the reasons why you don't use an elevator in a fire, because the fire would activate the buttons, and would stop on that floor.

The touch buttons were neon valves (tubes) that were held at a DC voltage just under the neon strike voltage. A superimposed AC voltage referenced to earth meant that anyone touching the touchplate (coupled to the end of the tube by a spring) would provide a ground reference and the neon would strike over and pass enough current to bring in a sensitive relay. It's the glow of the neon that lights the button.

@georgef551 Well it certainly wasn't Wikipedia. I've been an industrial electrician for 30 years. The tube Otis used for the touch buttons was a rebadged QT1257. It's a neon filled tube that is held just under its striking voltage and has a superimposed AC component to make it fire when a grounded object is brought near it's front.
