I recently found this unopened package of Paper Mate Write Bros. medium point, black ink, ballpoint pens at a local thrift store. These are the old design with slender white barrels. A promotional contest displayed on the package had a deadline for entry of December 31, 2002, so I'm guessing these pens were likely in stores sometime earlier that year, making them around 21 years old. Would they still write? I was anxious to find out - and I compare them to the current Paper Mate Write Bros. design.

Yeah, I'm one of the ones who hates the new design of these pens. The thinner barrels were more comfortable to me because I have small hands.

I've got this pen that looks exactly like the one from 'Write Bros,' but it's labeled 'Kilometrico.' I picked it up a few months ago at my local Lidl store on sale, a pack of 10 for just under a dollar. Love your channel!

Hi Delaney - that is a good idea for a video. Although my storage method is fairly basic. I'll try to do a video on it in the future. Thank you for subscribing!

I just donated a bunch of older (20+ year old) Write Bros in Ann Arbor recently. I have more than I know what to do with. I love seeing the old Meijer price tags though! For some reason, it seems like the older Write Bros. seem to be more likely to write than older Bics for some reason, at least in my experience with all of the vintage packs and boxes I have.

Thanks! I have had mixed results trying to get old ballpoints to write. It probably depends in part on how and where they are stored.

These are still available here in the UK/Europe. They're now called Paper Mate "Kilometrico" and are made in India - Still really nice to write with and one of my favourite cheap ball points.
@ilurvemv

How interesting - I thought they discontinued the design altogether but apparently they've just stopped making them for the US customers, boo! The Europe markets always get the better pens and designs.

thanks, dcuk5! Another viewer told me about the Kilometrico pens - I didn't realize these are still in production elsewhere. I don't know why they discontinued them in the US. I've heard from many who preferred the slender design.

Hi Kevin. The Bic will always be my favorite disposable ballpoint pen, but the fact that this pen works after languishing around for 21 years is wonderful! I was floored when I found out my son wasn't learning cursive in school. He had lessons at home, but he struggled since there was no reinforcement at school. He's 25 now, but he will tell you he struggles with reading cursive. Do you select a different pen/pencil each day or do you tend to gravitate to a select few? I write/draw in pencil most of the time, but try to at least change things up once a week. Have a lovely week, Kevin! By the way, I miss the Cavalcade Radio Hour!

If your son is willing to exercise his brain a bit, you could tell him to practice writing letters in cursive, and words from there. That'll very quickly instill a familiarity with them in his mind. (I did that for Japanese script, and a key for my limited-but-present ability to read words is due to writing pages upon pages of their syllable characters.) Just an idea. You never know where and when a hobbyist could show up with the proper incentive.
@AlwaysAnalog

Hi Nancy! I'm with you on Bic being my favorite disposable ballpoint. I've tried a lot of alternatives over the years, and I always come back to some version of the Bic Cristal. Sorry that your son struggles with cursive - and when you are unable to write in cursive you are also challenged to be able to easily read cursive. I have two cups on all my desks (work, home, studio). One contains pencils, the other pens. The cups only contain the writing instruments that I enjoy using in any writing application. I don't have a specific rotation, but with the pencils I use one until the point has worn blunt, and it goes into a "sharpen cup." Once all the pencils have been used and worn and moved to the sharpen cup, I sharpen them all and start all over again. Thanks for being such a loyal listener to the Cavalcade Radio Hour! Unfortunately, after 52 episodes the show didn't manage to find an audience locally, so I stopped producing it. Hoping to find a new home for the program in the new year! Thanks!!

My mom would buy us these in August prior ro the school year. I think they were a few cents cheaper than Bic. Around 1980, Bic came out with the Round Stic. It had the white barrel with ink colored caps and tips as well. Back then, the Bic round stic was called the Bic Biro. Btw, Walmart has a branded stick pen called "Pen + Gear". It has a clear triangular barrel with built in grips and a snap on cap. A box of 36 sells for $4.24. I bought a box (black ink only) and they are quite nice!
@ilurvemv
@ilurvemv 7 месяцев назад
I've seen those Pen + Bear pens on the Walmart website but never realized they're triangular, the pictures make it look like they're round. Maybe Always Analog should review these next (but they only come in black, not blue). ETA: according to a Walmart reviewer, these are the Cello Tri-Mate ballpoint pens rebranded as Pen + Gear to sell to the American audiences but the exact same pens.

I know what you mean about schools no longer teaching script. I gave my granddaughter a birthday card that I wrote a note in. She immediately handed it to my son and asked him to read it for her. Because she didn't know how to read it. And she was just about to enter high school at the time. I think it is because of the indoctrination of kids today. They don't want them to be able to read historical documentation. It is very sad and discouraging what the system is doing to our newest generations.

I generally prefer Bic pens if I'm going to go with a disposable pen. But I almost always go for a pencil when appropriate.

I prefer Bic pens for writing with ink at all situations that demand it (i.e. signing or writing something that MUST be indellible), but if I can get away with it I'll also use a pencil. Not the least reason being graphite will last *_far_* longer than any ballpoint ink so far invented, without eating through the paper like iron gall ink will do eventually.

I'm one of those that CANNOT STAND fat writing implements. Even as a child I never liked crayons, which may be why I never drew. Nowadays I found a nice Pilot mechpen (just abandoned on a bench) that is nice in all aspects... except the grip. Far too wide for me to handle comfortably and write legibly at the same time. Cursive in the US, in my view, may recede for now, until it becomes niche, then seen with an exotic and artistic appeal. It's always a pendulum with things like this. Of course, someone has to incentivize and promote it through vocal appreciation and conservation. And in this, Kevin, your channel plays a _vital_ role. The effort you make here has merit and will be appreciated by future enthusiasts - they say once you post something on the internet it never goes away, and you're leaving a nice mark in the archives, even if your channel is currently small. Mass culture is coming to an end sooner than most realize.
@AlwaysAnalog

Hi DFT - I know you're not alone in your dislike for larger writing instruments. When Paper Mate changed the design of this pen to a wider barrel, many people were upset. They loved the thinness of these pens (even though there were many other options that wrote better, but were a bit wider). Cursive will never again be the prominent form or handwriting that it once was. Actually, what I'm seeing in many students is a decline in good printing in addition to the inability to write in cursive. We are likely heading towards a dominant digital writing culture, where writing by hand in any style will be a niche interest. But there will always be some of us who will hold on to the analog means of communication and celebrate it. Thanks!

Paper Mate from the 90's were the best!. I do not remember what model they were , I still have 3 of them. The body is just the same as this Write Brothers and is solid blue color exactly the blue as the "comment" button on the chat, they were the cheapest model I believe. All is written on them is Paper Mate and they have the hearts. They still wrote well until recently, very bold rich ink. These are the ones that got me into Paper Mate. The new ones suck, so now Im buying the Inkjoy versions . Do you remember the ones im talking about? I think one is dried up, how can i get it back to work lol.?

Students can't write cursive and can't spell because computers just fix spelling. The tell is when they consistently conjugate verbs incorrectly or use the incorrect form of there/they're/their because spell check often isn't the greatest at grammar although it is improving. Soon they won't be able to type because of speech to text and AI. They already can't operate a desktop computer, only about 20 years after computer classes spread like wildfire across the country, because they are so different than the phone or tablet they've had shoved in their face since infancy. The concept of "page 43" is foreign to them because all of their books are eBooks on an iPad. The times are changing.
