In 1982 I bought one of these new. It was my first serious bike. The only thing I changed was a set of Mavic wheels. Over the next fourteen years I put several thousand miles on it--up and down the California coast, Death Valley, and many autumn tours of Vermont with Vermont Bicycle Tours. The bike always attracted a crowd. It was not only beautiful as a design but beautiful mechanically. The bike was nimble, quick and very comfortable. On one of my visits to the dealer after I'd had it for a while I said it was a really fast bike. He said, "It only goes as fast as you peddle it." True, but I thought the aerodynamic design of the calipers and water bottle still gave me some kind of advantage. In 1988 I bought a new Trek 1200 aluminum which mostly sat in the garage because the PH12 was so much better. I sold it a few years ago and have regretted it since. A gorgeous bit of design and engineering. Great to see this one restored.

I had one of these back in 81 or 82. This brought back a lot of memories. It looked the part but I always thought it too heavy. Got a Gitane to replace it. The Gitane is now in the garage on a turbo trainer.

I appreciate the effort you put into finding the correct parts when possible for your refurbishments and restorations, especially on more desirable or historically significant bikes. I had two of these , the missing bars were atax and the bars were engraved philipe? . I remeber the CLB aero levers were the smoothest I have ever used. The bikes retailed at £180 in the early 80`s being towards the top of the lower range of Peugeot bikes.

I've just this morning picked up a 1982 Peugeot PH12 Centennial edition complete bike. And shall soon start it's complete restoration.... mines in VGC, 57cm frame and does not need as much work as the one you have in this video. My base is already a very good starting point, just gonna change the bar tape to a nice BENOTTO orange, two new Michelin Dynamic 700x23c tires and CLB lever hoods, and then it shall be ready to ride.

BikeIt UK You're most welcome my good friend- you deserve every bit of praise and encouragement. Here in France (where the nation is going to pot, as we say) you can pick up an old Peugeot for literally a song. They're (strangely) scowled upon. Why? Because, like Raleigh in England, some of their models were run of the mill, and that gained them the reputation of being bottom end. Their frames, like Raleigh again, were basically good steel frames. However, I don't think they ever used Reynolds or Columbus tubing- hence the "lower end". The French derailers were always functional, but never came anywhere near to the beauty of the inimitable Campys. They did, however, make some mythical brakes. This is probably explained by the fact that there is some really treacherous mountain terrain here, where you spend more time breaking than pedaling- downhill I mean. The most mythical bike in France is the René Herse. He was a genius. Even in very poor shape they go for the higher thousands. He made a crazy model that could be literally slided in half! The Italians are another kettle of fish. Beautiful, gorgeous, and racy as hell. Colnago apperently built a gold racer for the Pope. I'm eagerly looking forward to your Italian adventure! I think I'll activate the slow motion button! God bless mate.

@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 8 лет назад
+Ben Hargreaves Hi Ben, I get asked this a lot also and I think in one or two videos I have mentioned it, maybe a good way would be to list certain things in the description of the video. As for your question for the decreasing I have used a product called Rubicon, then wash down with simple soapy water. I then use a product called T-cut which is a rubbing compound for the car industry. As for metal work I just use a metal polishing cream. I hope that this helps all the best and thanks again for watching. Andy

Wow, nice to watch this video... I own a vintage Peugeot bike originally purchased by me as the first owner in the year 1985 in nearly the same color. I use it until today for my fitness training. I had to replace only a few parts . I'm impressed concerning Peugeot's product quality of those days. I'm not happy about that...I was not always so careful, as I should have been with the bike - but my bike resisted like hardly to believe. Nowadays I use it only at good wheather conditions , and some owners of modern road bikes make compliments, when they see, how it runs. In the moment I consider to purchase three historically correct parts, which I replaced a lot of years ago , to fulfil the rules of the L'Eroica. The rear wheel, the saddle, and the original aerodynamic drinking bottle. I never found again a matching bottle. I wish you a lot of fun riding your restored Road Bike. You did a great job. Greetings- Dirk

Firstly thanks for the comment and watching. The paint I bought online as a pearlescent white, I know that the decals are also available on eBay if you search under PH12. The rest of the spec I got from searching on Google and found the original spec sheet for the bike on an image I found. I bought many parts from around the world but was worth the effort for such a classic which was way beyond its time. Hope this helps all the best and good luck with the build! Andy

Greetings from Las Vegas NV USA. Love my Centennial PH12. I own two of them. One fully restored, one that complete yet unrestored. You did a great job on the restore. I love how understated your description of how difficult the brake lever hood s are to acquire. Same with the water bottle. Love the pearl white bike, with satin finish wheels. Beauty be. What type of handlebar tape did you end up using. I searched endlessly for Ambrosio silver tape, but ended up using pearl white Benotto. Best video of the CPH12 I have ever seen. Cheers!

Great vid! Doesn't it become a problem, since you mask some of the white parts around the decals. What I mean isn't the white colour different just by the decals, and the newly sprayed area. Or how do you solve this?
@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 9 лет назад
+Oliver Vukic To be honest its not the white as I mask so close to the line plus match it up, its more the depth that can cause a problem, with added layers. You are better off completely stripping the bike down respraying and buying new decals, however this can make the rebuild more than what the bike is worth I have found. So with that said it all depends on if you will be moving the bike on or keeping it for ones self! Hope this helps all the best and thanks for watching. Andy

Yet another amazing video! Great bike! I'm wondering, as you don't strip it back to bare metal, do you sand down the whole frame except the decal area? Or just sand down the bare metal and rust spots. You paint primer over the existing paint or just touch up bare metal with primer? Then you cover the existing paint with pearl top coat? People have advised me against trying to do a pearlescent paint job myself. I have a pearlescent Peugeot that had many spots where the rust was under the paint, now, cleaned i have many bare metal spots, if I touch up just the spots the paint won't match, but I've always heard that if you paint over existing paint it won't end up very good? Or lasting? It is nice to see you do more restorations than fixie rebuilds.
@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 7 лет назад
+Paul Steen Hi Paul thanks for the comment. In my video I was selling the bike on which has a huge difference in the restoration decision making process I feel. If you are keeping the bike for yourself and money isn't the object, then go the full hog have it stripped and sprayed professionally. As regards to the rubbing down I would clean and treat rusted areas, then run the whole frame down before spraying. Hope this answers a couple of your questions and good luck with the project

Andy: you always seem to find bikes where the frame size seems to fit you spot on. Do you even end up finding a bike for restoration where the bike is either too big or too small to fit you? Or do you just pass on those? Also you seem to always be pretty lucky or skilled at locating these old bikes to restore. I just don't see this many cool old road bikes like this here in the US where I live. The only vintage biuke like this I found one time was a old Gitane Gran Sport.Deluxe. But once I got it I could never get the one bottom bracket cup out of the frame. So it is just hanging up in my garage. Do you think just more of these vintage road bikes were sold in the UK?
@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 8 лет назад
+Jensen Healey Firstly thanks for the comment and watching! I tend to focus on the 23.5" frame because its my size, but also it was classed as a medium size frame, so the resale is open to a larger audience. Saying that I have just finished a frame to large for me that I came across and had to do up. Im just working on the video now. So watch this space the video will be up soon. Ref the bikes in the UK the bikes in the 1980's I grew up with so I always have my eye open for them. Believe it or not my last bike I picked up I found in a bush, however the majority of the cycles i get are from eBay. As for the US I haven't a clue, I do know it was a complete different market regarding models. Your bottom bracket have you soaked it in a release agent and the right hand cup has a left hand thread on. My latest restoration needed lubing and then placing in the vice to release it. I hope that this helps all the best and thanks again for watching! Andy

+yoyobecks thanks for tuning in, great question. This frame had small outlets. I used two bits of fishing line. In one hole I fed a loop in to catch the receiving line from the other end. Once threaded I connected the cable and pulled it through. I hope this helps all the best and good luck! 👍Andy

well done. I have a question if you don't mind. I just picked up a peugeot frame today. Looks like an 80's. Light blue, nice chrome fork one decal saying vitesse 12 speed. Only original component left is the downtube shifters, and them being there is what sealed the deal - for $25. I've built plenty of bikes, but never a Frenchie. The bb is standard english, and the spacing looks like 126 on the rear. My question is on the headset and fork - is this a standard size, or something odd? Again great bike there, too bad you couldn't keep that one.

Great videos! What kind of gum wall tires are you using for these projects?
@BikeItUK
@BikeItUK 6 лет назад
Thanks for watching and tuning in. Regarding tyres it all depends on the value of the bike 🚲 generally the lower end are unbranded gum wall 700c x 23 tyres from eBay approx £18 pair. I also use Michelin Dynamic’s which are a good tyre I feel for the cost then all the way up to top to super corsa tyres at £80 a pair. As I say it all depends on the value of the restoration you are working on. Hope this helps and thanks again Andy
