Vintage Psychiatric Interview | Chronic Hallucinatory Psychosis and Paranoid Delusions

Mental Health Treatment

Subtitled in English. The case presented is a good example of an abnormality of thought content, while the thought process appears undisturbed. The patient experiences auditory and olfactory hallucinations in the context of persecutory delusions, yet is able to convey this to the psychiatrist in an organized manner.

It's aggravating how many of the people posting comments here are absolutely clueless about how significant this woman's problems are. She is not "hearing her neighbors" in her building; she is hallucinating critical or mocking voices directed at her, which is a very common symptom of schizophrenia. There is no gas leak in her apartment, nor are smells coming in from the trash chute - these also are hallucinations. People are looking at her well-groomed appearance and hearing her calm voice and assuming there's nothing wrong. Unfortunately, there is.

@@nadMoZzzg Over 40 years ago, a bipolar friend underwent a significant mental breakdown with hallucinations and delusions. Fortunately, another friend got me to assist in getting her back to her family for treatment. Meanwhile everyone else who knew her was denying anything was wrong and claiming she always acted that way. After I experienced that episode, which was quite unsettling to me, I realized that people will either misinterpret mental illness or will just deny it by making up excuses or justifications for what the unbalanced person is doing and saying. That's what commenters here are doing as well.

Yep. Hearing voices of members of your family or neighbors talking about you in an atypical way (weither a constant criticism nor the total opposite, I've heard a story of a guy who believed his parents thought he would be the next french president and how to help him planning it), reflecting megalomania or paranoia tendencies. Stories of people hearing this through walls, pipes, garbage chute, air vent or even heating system (it happened at least once lol) are typical examples.

The scariest part of this interview is that to many of us, she sounds perfectly normal, and yet psychiatric diagnosis is there, and it seems it could happen to anyone, which can be very manipulative..... that frightens me more than hallucinating. I think she is suffering from overwork and loneliness.

@Arielibellule

well... this level of hallucinations is not just caused by overwork and loneliness. But with a psychotic structure (probably schizophrenic because social isolation is one of the first symptoms) these can be factors triggering an episode.

These problems have a biological origin, tumors in the brain, imbalance in hormones, sometimes medications can cause hallucinations.

Those symptoms are a sign of paranoia due to mental illness. My friend complains there is always a smell that makes her sick. Her food is poison, and tv talks to her. And thinks people follow her. She also has ocd very bad. And is very bitter she's alone and says why am I alone wh e n everyone else marries or have children. She refuses medicine. So nothing I can do to help her.

yep. I have a BPD implying hallucinations. I am obsessed with smells, specifically bad smells that disturb me a lot (it can provoke fear, panic and feeling of immediate threaten, makes me think of sickness or death sometimes). At some point I can smell them everywhere for hours to days. Can't imagine this happening for months, or more.

sounds just like the beginnings of dementia. i had a client who was certain her neighbors were sending over dangerous shadow animals to stalk her. she tried to shoot them, she said, knowing full well i knew she didn't have guns. i was just standing there, listening and looking at this woman who in her youth belonged to the WRENS. she just snapped one day, i watched it, and it fell apart. she was in the hallucinatory stage. i was very sad. very.

most peoples’ reactions to this interview show absolutely no knowledge of psychiatry - zilch, niente, rien! hearing voices saying very nasty things to a person is very typical, as is some paranoia. it is very disheartening in 2023 that people still know so very little about mental illness when it’s been at least 100 years since disorders have been known and studied. heck, people should have at least heard of Freud, (although thank goodness that therapy has changed and the chemistry of brain disorders is well established). please people research a little before you deign to state an “opinion”. thank you. :) 🌷🌱

psychiatry is largely a psuedoscience. Everyone can have their opinion on what's wrong here. I personally think she's having a reaction to a gas leak. All kinds of crap happens in apartment. I got sick from a propane leak in my building and it took me about 6 months to realize that's what was happening
@vegandolls

' the 'chemistry' of brain disorders is well established? no it isn't. Maybe YOU should do some research before you put your arrogant OPINION out there. You're just spouting stuff out like it's gospel when it isn't. Very little is known about schizophrenia actually and they haven't come far in treating it

Sadly there were no questions about her relationship with her mom and dad. I think it'll explain a lot. She often repeats that she only hears voices in the kitchen and bathroom, but not in the bedroom. Something tells me that in her past she may have been bullied and insulted by a family members mostly in these rooms. However, she may often hid in the bedroom and felt safe there, which is why she does not hear voices there. I also wonder what's was her relastionship with husband and kids if she had? I guess, that she has a mild form of schizophrenia.

She does have delusions and other schizophrenia symptoms like persecution complex, hallucinations and suspiciousness. She is indeed able to convey this to the psychiatrist in an organized manner just like the video description says but she is not well. Her delusions are also associated with the current events in her surroundings and her country. She is talking about people gossiping about her going out with arabs. Perhaps this was in the news/agenda - migration from the Arabic countries. People with schizophrenia often show this symptom: persecution mania and hallucinations stemming or associated with what’s in the news especially if it’s something sensationalist and/or sensitive. For instance in Russia in the beginning of the nineties some people with schizophrenia had hallucinations and persecution complex associated with aliens because there was a lot of interest to aliens and some esoteric matters in the society. So people with schizophrenia would claim they once were abducted by aliens or something of this sort. And while it’s clear that aliens could not abduct anyone as we don’t know if they even exist, it’s much easier to say that person with such a delusion is unwell. But if or when the delusions feel more true to life it’s harder to tell if that person is unwell, especially if one is not a psychiatrist.
@alylyu3659
@alylyu3659 Год назад
@D I am not going to discredit you and I know that victims of abuse can suffer from various forms of psychological instability like ptsr for instance. I am also aware of cases when people were institutionalized just for being “uncomfortable” for their societies, communities and/or families. However, some disorders occur regardless of the environment, sadly. Sometimes people are born with them, due to genetics, for instance. And such disorders manifest just later in life. Sometimes due to certain triggers (traumatic situations or physical injury). Here we only see a part of the story. It’s the interview. And the interview does show some common features of schizophrenia in the interviewed person :(

She is obviously high functioning. I am no psychiatrist so I won’t debate on her condition; I only hope that she wasn’t put on any treatment that would only aggravate her mental state, like strong opiates or electroshocks. I have seen that with a friend: more meds = more intense mental disorders. She needed calmative treatment and a more fulfilling lifestyle.

Her experiences aren't enough basis for that sort of diagnosis. Older women who live alone and keep to themselves are commonly subjected to disrespectful, bullying behavior at work and from neighbors. Sounds and odors coming from the vents and garbage chutes in an apartment building isn't at all farfetched. Even smoke could waft through some of the shoddy systems in cheap apartment buildings. She has only had these 'symptoms' for *2-3 months,* and *only at work and inside her apartment.* But the work situation was totally different in character from what she experienced at home. She clearly stated that the voices she heard at home were not her co-workers. She didn't know who they were. So she experienced one type of very common problem at work, and a different kind of fairly common issue at home. The psychiatrists seem quick to condemn and force her into treatment. What crime has she committed? She stated that she continues to work and pay her bills, doesn't drink or do drugs or hang out in bars, probably doesn't even smoke cigarettes. So what exactly is the problem? I don't think they stated why she was hospitalized.

Yes, one of the characteristics of psychosis sometimes is "dysosmia" or "phantosmia" : smelling smells that no-one else does. Sometimes the smells are not too unpleasant, like the smell of fresh-cut oranges or bubblegum, but often they are offensive, like the smells of feces, vinegar or dirty feet.

That's funny, I had exactly the same impression in the building of my last apartment. I smelled gas, but only in the stairway, not my apartment. So I bought a detection device, it showed zero all the time. Until now, I don't know what it was. But the smell was there. She may have confused the smell of gas with some other smell. Personally, I'm 100% sure it smelled awful whatever it was, if not gas.
