This vintage railway and travel film was produced by British Transport films in 1956.
Travelling from Euston to North Wales an exiled Welshman, Meredith Edwards, remembers the harder and hardier north of his varied homeland - not the teeming industries nor the lush western peninsula, but the Wales that stretches from Calder Idris to Snowdon and back through the mountains of Caernarvon, Merioneth and Denbigh to the northern marches of the English border via Llangollen's Eisteddfod.

Aaaaah my old University of Swansea days, back to the valleys and the mountains, back to the pubs of Cardiff docks on my used 250 cc James motorbike that cost 50 of the quids. I'm bursting into song and preparing to repel Zulus here. Me and my mate Richard bicycled to his cousin's in the Brecon Beacons 1962 London to Bristol non-stop, stay with his other cousin 1 night then to the train under the Severn and on to the farm. I lost the photo of us in our plastic macs on our bikes in the non-stop dark Brecon Beacons drizzle overlooking the Usk valley. Those were the days !

Delightful, not only in content but style too. I think myself lucky in having a special place in the world that emulates all these bucolic sentiments of “home” . If time travel is ever a reality, can someone from the future please stop by and take me back to the 1950s in the UK 😎

Sometimes it is good to wallow in nostalgia, but we always have to return to the present day, a bit of escapism is just fine. The music helps.

Wonderful. My father was dying in 1956. We lived in London but my Mother was of Welsh Heritage being the grand daughter of one of the Patagonian settlers. I was whisked off to my Grand parents house in Rhyl, where my Grandfather was a Methodist Minister in Prestatyn. I only stayed there for a couple of years but now aged 70 I can still vividly remember it. I consider my self as Welsh, despite being of mixed UK source!!

Wonderful. Life seemed so much more leisurely and healthier then, before plastic took over the lands and sea, and Portmeirion before it became a reluctant home for The Prisoner!

I've seen many a film with Meredith Edwards playing different roles during the 1940's/50's/60's, including Tiger Bay (with John Mills). This BTF film says a lot about the period when getting around by train was still the norm for so many, before the car began to take over and the following generations got sucked into a whirlpool of ring roads, motorways, dual carriageways and..... railways (social transport) were being ripped up everywhere across the UK, not to mention the increase in lorry traffic as freight was lost to roads because of short-sighted governments, road lobbyists and the rest. Nice piece of film here though.

What a brilliant video! Does anyone know where I can find similar ones? I've watched and rewatched the ones on this channel

From the BFI. They've several volumes of these BTF films on DVD and Blu-Ray. Think they're also available to rent on their website.

I can't believe they destroyed the lovely old Euston station, replaced with an ugly concrete structure.

@@jamescollins3647 Yes I was young then but couldn't wait to see the old knocked down for the concrete mess that followed like most people at the time. How wrong we were.

This was before Dr Beeching, not easy to get about in Wales by train these days. Oh well won't be long before I am in Wales again, unless they close the borders for Christmas because of Covid :(

He’s in London, five hours from home. Yet he laments like he’s half a world away. Don’t just look,at the train man! Get on it.
