This vintage railway film, produced by British Transport Films in 1959, gives some sense of the novelty and excitement of a drivers perspective from a childs point of view in a new diesel railcar, a view previously unattainable with loco hauled trains.

Wonderful piece of social history. I remember when the DMU's repalced steam in 1958 on the Ealing to Greenford shuttle. A fight to get to the front seat. Life seemed better then.

These were the final days when Britain was still decent and Britain had an excellent national railway network to travel on. I admire those who took advantage to travel the whole of Britain by train before the Beeching cuts destroyed and fragmented the railway network.

It's you yes. World has always been and will always be shitty as long as life exists on its surface to grow old or sick and then die. Once the last human will drop dead though and then the nonsense will end for good.

The water trough sequence was at Halifax Jn in Ipswich, and the final shots with the large signal gantry are Ipswich Upper Yard, by Gippeswyk Park. Other recognisable places are Norwich, Oulton Broad, Somerleyton and Spooner Row!

A quaint and picturesque train ride with dad's answers to the children's many inquisitive questions. Unique view of track pans at 3:57 and an interesting variety of other views from the front of the railcar.

those were the days, great video. i was 6 in 1959, train travel was great and peaceful. i lived in east sussesx and we had the brighton belle and 6pul units to marvel over and if we were lucky we got a glimpse of electric loco 2003 at newhaven,we always had lunch on the train if we went to london, that was exciting because of the pullman car in the middle of the train

Love it! I remember going on those Cravens units out of Kings Cross to Winchmore Hill many a time. Love the track gang in this video. They look like some kind of hit squad in their dark coats. No day-glo, no lookout no safety gear, no machines, just some shovels and straight on the track the moment the train has gone by. Looks so odd now, but hey it worked up to a point.

Lovely colour versions of some of the previously seen B&W footage, but I smiled that one train journey started in flat Norfolk with the Broads, and had mountains at the end! Not many mountains in Norfolk! even a short clip of Oulton Broad from the Lowestoft to Norwich line, looking across to Everetts Park!

I have to laugh. Anywhere else in the world this would be a rail motor or rail car set. A traditional "train" is a locomotive hauling carriages , freight wagons or if in the UK, goods wagons. Good video to show the way it was.

BBR, Thanks for posting another gem from the archives. The colour and trite storyline shows how ‘selling’ the idea of travel was wrapped up in ‘Janet and John’ pictorial novels format, complete with ‘middle class’ ideal family units. Identikit people for a make believe world of British Rail idealised propaganda. The reality was removal of services, closure of lines, reduction of investment - ‘rationalisation’. Looks good, but did not work like that! Where are the vandals who closed so much of the investment of previous generations? Peter

I’m probably wrong but I thought the mountain bit at the end was the Lake District possibly the old Penrith to Cockermouth line along the banks of Bassenthwaite Lake. Hell of a long trip from Norwich!

Think it might have started from Gt Yarmouth as one bridge crossing looked very like Reedham on the Yare just after Breydon Water and later the bridges approaching Thorpe St. Andrew. Kicking off from Norwich going west we wouldn`t have seen so much of the broads.

I left England as a child in 1959, emigrated to Canada, and as much as this video tugs at the nostalgic heartstrings...and I was thinking exactly as you are...it belies how incredibly tough life was for much of the public in those days. That being said, I still love cycling the UK countryside, and riding the heritage railways, but yes, a part of me longs for an idyll like this, whether it was attainable or not. I'm deeply torn from watching this...

I’m from Canada and have visited England but once: was that the Lake District in the second half? I have the whole boxed set of BTF films on DVD. I wish the same had been done in Canada during the steam to diesel transition days, with our then-national publicly owned railway. Such professional filmmaking, Antstey et al.

I was nine, old enough to remember my mother crying as we were so poor, she couldn't afford a school uniform for my older sister, and my dad was a hard working decorated war vet. I remember my mother throwing her purse at the wall amidst her desperate tears, and her money, the family's money rolled on the floor...all two pennies. That was the straw that broke the camel's back to emigrate. Make no mistake, I'd love to crawl into that video and live the lavish middle-class dream portrayed. But it's a lie, for all but a few. There's a reason that the late Fifties saw maximum emigrated from the UK. Most had no choice but to doing so.

Some of the questions and comments said by the boy I found funny 😆, it was all different then - 1950s, interesting to see that the drivers partition had glass so you could see how he was driving and look out of the windscreen, bemusedly they replaced the sound of the train and passengers with 50s soft-jazz [acoustic] - giving you the false impression that the train had background music, and the boy asking his parents questions.

For all the claims how "run down" the railways were supposed to have been post war, the track & trackside was much better kept in this period than when I travelled regularly in the late 1970s, & while the track itself might be better now (welded rail & concrete sleepers) & signaling modernised, the rest of the railway is a shit-heap by comparison.. no pride in it whatsoever anymore.
