Vintage RC Gliding. 1939 78" Carl Goldberg Sailplane. Converted from a Belair Models part-kit. 

The original 1939 design was for a powered free flight model. I used a Belair Models part-kit and changed the fuselage design to extend the nose into a pure glider. The overall shape of the rear fuselage is the same but the internal structure is new. Moving control surfaces etc have been added and the wing straightened. Overall weight came out just under 1kg. The maiden flight was in just 1-3 mph of breeze.

Excellent!! Makes me want to teleport back to Torrey Pines with my Goldberg glider. It was always my goal to hand catch land!

It would be tempting to make one of these parasol wings with an acrylic pedestal so it looks like the wing is just floating over the fuselage.

Hi John, my brother and I are co-designing a vintage style glider that looks very similar to this design of yours. My brother Tom built the wings and I am completing the rest. Our wing has under-camber on the bottom and is re-flexed on top. You did a fantastic job again John, thanks for the entertaining content! A very beautiful and stable model!

That's my sort of glider. Classic, slow and well behaved. I seem to remember seeing the design in practical mechanics or one of those magazines. Yet another triumph John. Look forward to the next one. :-)

By far the most stable flight of all your vids. Was it a calmer day, or possibly the higher wing loading? That thing is on rails.

Old folks soaring.

Absolutely marvelous. They don't make them like that anymore. Even when they did, not quite as nice as that! No such thing as too much rudder with the straightened wing. Very responsive. The angle of incidence looks higher than customary, perhaps its just the parasol perch? Is the wing undercambered? It seems virtually stall proof. In any case, one of your more beautiful undertakings, Sir. It certainly seems like I say or think that a lot!!

Ooo, I missed this one! Very nice, and similar-ish to the Valkyrie. The pylon has that forwards throw angle, and I'm not sure if it's just me, but did this have a slight tail heavy attitude? I just felt uneasy at times watching it. Mind you 1 to 3 mph breeze is not very much, so maybe it's that.

Question for Mr Woodfield. Which do find more pleasure in, building or flying? You are a master at both.
