Just a demonstration of how back in the day a 175 ave got you on the Classic Leagues and a 180 + got you competitive in most scratch tournaments. 600 series actually meant something and a 700 series was a " life goal " ... I miss those numbers ... But time changes everything .
@billspruce8368
@billspruce8368 Год назад
100% correct... at 16 years old in 1983 I bowled a 711 set with an LT48 on lanes oiled with a spray gun... one of only three 700 sets in the entire 20-lane house for the whole season at a time when some nights had double shifts. By '96 when they had a lane machine and I was in college, I had 33 700's between 2-leagues for a season. There's no better indicator that says bowing is a joke... drop it, spin it, top it... doesn't matter... everybody scores.

My father was a pro in 1968 and got a 300 in 69 in league...solid gold ring. Ruby and diamond ... and then it was every time you threw 300..or 800.. back until about 76.....a rarity to say the least!

I remember watching a match in 1977 and on the show they presented the odds of shooting a 300 game: Average League Bowler: 420,000 to 1, Pro: 6000 to 1.

gotta remember the black diamond was made for wood lanes w barely any oil on them. Its hard to comprehend the difference on todays lanes due to the volume of oil put out and how the lanes are different but you can def tell the difference w the ball in general. I have an ebonite black beauty rubber ball and i use to use it for spares. Its amazing how the industry has changed. I would love to go to the holler house and use it on their lanes.

You also have to keep in mind that the inner cores of these bowling balls have a lot to do with how the ball motion is down lane. A lot of the earlier bowling balls don't have the same weight blocks as the reactive balls do.

Just depends on the way it's drilled and the lane conditions. The rubber ball could easily outperform.

Huge difference in technology between those two balls. Black Diamond: hard rubber shell and pancake weight block. The shell is heavier than the core. I've never seen an RG measurement for an old rubber ball, but it would certainly be higher than a White Dot. Maybe as high as 2.8 or so? Back in the late 1970s I carried a Roto Silver Streak, which was a Black Diamond labeled for Roto. It was a ball for dry lanes, and back then bowling was bigger and it was common to have two shifts of leagues a night. For the 9:30PM league a rock like this came in handy. Compared to a vintage White Dot it had a different shape downlane, with a tendency to bite early in the track (which you noticed) even though the surface measured harder, but lots of skid and energy retention when you got deeper. Rubber tracked up quick too, which is why you saw ball polishing machines in bowling centers. It wasn't just to make them pretty.

I still throw my dads old 1968 AMF 3 dot. As a lefty, i found the new balls hook waaaay too much for me. I went back to the old ball about 20 years ago, and have shot 7 300's with it. I cant dispute that the new balls have more reaction, but the old ball still does the trick. Good video!!

I remember Jack Nicklaus saying in a book he wrote once that because of the current equipment(at the time he wrote the book) all golfers were hitting their shots straighter than they should, bowling got the same way..The reactive balls came out and everybody bowled higher scores because of it, they weren't necessarily better bowlers, the balls were just better. Then all those fancy sport shot patterns came out to equalize things again

That Lily trip at 7:40 made the whole video worth it. Obviously you have not used rubber much. 😂 Rubber requires a certain touch and method and when you understand how to use it on House it can be lights out. In my league a bowler only uses a 1968 rubber ball and shot his first 300 about a month ago. I used my rubber ball in the same league and had the front 8. Makes you respect the bowlers of old and their amazing scoring abilities with a simple cork filled rubber ball.

Back in the early 90s, I joined a long winter mixed league. At first, I was so bad, I couldn't break 100. I was trying to throw a polyester ball straight, and failing miserably. My boss was a semi-pro bowler who gave me an old hard rubber ball and told me how to throw a hook. (He never watched me bowl, and I never watched him bowl.) Once I has getting consistent throws, I bought a burgundy hammer, and everything changed. By the end of the same league season, I was CRUSHING my average, and had I high score of 276! I was accused of deliberately ruining my average in the beginning of the season to rake in the money on the handicapped high score pots at the end. I still have that burgundy Hammer today, as well as an Ebonite Nitro reactive ball.
