restoreandmake...
The Burston Snail Cam wrench is a beautiful piece of vintage toolcraft. This particular adjustable spanner had been in the family for decades and had seen better days. As usual when restoring any antique tool I like to start with the least invasive process possible to give an impression of what we're going to be up against. In this instance the Evaporust didn't have a great deal of effect, even when put in the ultrasonic bath, it did however free off the jaws.The way to adjust the mouth of this particular wrench is to rotate the snail cam, so called because of it's shape, like a snail's shell. Our snail cam had seized in position and needed the application of heat and penetrating oil to eventually free it. Some of the pitting and score marks were so deep that they had to be filed out, something I'm not too keen on doing as it can affect the shape and original nature of the tool, in this case there wasn't much choice but as little was done as was practical. Then came sanding with 120 grit paper followed by 180 and 240, then onto the Axminster AC150BB buffing machine to give a beautiful mirror finish to this vintage tool which was nearly 90 years old.
We hope this practical demonstration of how to repair and restore a vintage tool will help to teach you all the processes involved in a restoration project, help to learn new skills and give you the confidence to practice them yourself.
This is an amsr video with only workshop noises.

You did a great job on this lovely historic tool. I like it when a restoration is somewhat soft, and is not destroying the heart and soul of the object. Congrats for getting the spring into shape again and managing the fiddly work getting it into place. I pick up old spanners etc. occasionally on fleamarkets, but I leave them in their state giving them a good cleaning only. Maybe I should do a bit more work on them, I am reflecting this... Thanks for inspiration and best regards from Germany.

I am not sure I understand your work method on this wrench. Rust cleaning, brushing, rust cleaning again, then buffing? Seems like the sequence is out of step, but the end result was nice.
@restoreandmake
@restoreandmake 3 года назад
Hi Paul, thanks for your comment. I like to start off the process of renovation slowly and in the least aggressive way possible, using the Evaporust first gave an opportunity to free some of the working parts ready for removal, buffing and cleaning gives an opportunity to see how much pitting and damage there is and gives an indication of how to approach it. Slowly, slowly makey shiny👍😊

Beautiful job on an old tool. Just curious as to why you didn’t remove the lower jaw for easier cleaning. Would it not slide off over the handle?
@restoreandmake
@restoreandmake 3 года назад
Hi Richard, thank you so much for your kind comment, the lower jaw has a pin which protrudes into the channel, this is where the spring attaches, it must have been inserted when the wrench is made. To remove it would have involved drilling it out and therefore spoiling the wrench, some days it's better to compromise and work around these things than risk ruining something so good👍😊

@restoreandmake 3 года назад
G'day Maurice, thanks for your comment and I'm glad you liked the video. I only like to use bronze wire brushes as I get concerned about scratching the surface of the tool then having to remove more material to remove the scratch. It's about making the least impact on the tool as possible😊this was my first time with Evaporust, it certainly isn't as fast as hydrochloric acid but it's not as agresive and in this instance it started the cleaning process well👍😊
