I am still learning how to shoot with the head-mounted camera. It provides a LOT more freedom with what I can show, but I have to learn how to make sure it is making it in frame and isn't obscured or too far away.

My dad gave me one of these. He played it used in the 70's during middle school and high school and now I play it in the community band. I get complements for it all the time.

If I had a Zephyr Special, I would show up to the gig wearing three neckstraps and hook ‘em to all three strap rings, just to bother my section mates.

Agree on key heights. EX - on a n old, beat up Zephyr Bari, it would not play in tune on the upper stack - C# etc. Ilowered the heights of these keys using a tuner and , also by ear matching Cello drones on RU-vid, till I matched the different height for the best tuning of the notes.They werent in line, like you'd think afterwards. Takes a while, but that was one beautiful playing old Bari. there was no obvious damage in this area.

Perfect timing! I have a series 1A Zephyr (not special) for myself to overhaul. It's like a blend between the special and a s20 it seems..

For my pro set up the wide setting here slows down the ability to play fast on them. I use a tuner and usually have the D as low as possible so that it still speaks well. Its about the responsiveness and speed for me. Another trick is super gluing a custom piece of wood like a toothpick section on the foot to give a snappy , positive action - better than cork - especially on the D palm. This really improves the speed and response of palm keys.

Hi Matt! Related to the Zephyr, what knowledge do you have about the military horns that King produced in the 40s? Is there anything special about them other than being a Zephyr? Is their value affected in any way as being miltary horns and not having the Zephyr logo? Thanks and keep up the great work! Your channel has taught my dad and I a TON!!!

Love your videos. Can you make a video, wehre you show how to fix leaks and what instruments you use? I struggle so much with valves if there is a leak. Thank you so much. Greets Max

That horn condition is mind blowing! Just wish you were using a plastic pointer instead of that screwdriver. I was sweating throughout the video LOL.

Thanks for the great videos! What leak light do you use?

Thank you! I use the votaw light mainly, and in certain circumstances I will use an extremely bright led light that a colleague made for me.

Thanks for posting these SO informative videos, Matt. Just one question: there’s much talk about intonation problems on these Kings, what do you think?. Thank you
@StohrerMusic
@StohrerMusic 2 года назад
That mainly refers to the much earlier horns with split bell keys. The first Zephyrs are much better, and by the time you get to Zephyr Special and Super 20, the intonation is good. If you have one of those and you're having intonation issues, the problem most likely lies in setup or key heights.

I own a warm sounding SML Gold Medal silver plated tenor but I met on internet someone who would trade his King Zephyr Special for my SML. As I always loved the looks of these Kings and they are pricier than SML’s, would it be a good change?.

Good info! I recently finished a Super 20 & was a bit surprised how the keywork 'wanted' to be considerably lower than this after set up. Have you found a difference between the two models as well, or do you end up with a higher setup like this when you do a 20?
@StohrerMusic
@StohrerMusic 2 года назад
I find the first few Super 20s to be very similar in their key heights, for me, to Zephyr Specials. On a tenor through series II, it would look much like this.

Matt, Thanks: Key heights and Mouthpiece; could this be key to a Conn High Pitched Bb Tenor I have? So far, it has all Higher and Middle Register Notes, but no Low Notes of musical quality at all. Its music runs out below G, where all notes go woody
