This old Arctic cart cougar 500 has been sitting for years. It’s got a Suzuki spirt engine in it so it should run, Let’s get to work.

Now that I know everything works I’ll spend some time and money this summer and get it ready for next season. It’ll be a 1-2 pulls and running after that.

That was pure gold!!! doing the carb right off the machine while its snowing heavy, never giving up even though that one carb looked so so bad (so surprising the other one was ok!), just slamming gas into the cylinders and carb, pull cord snaps, just pull on a new tiny pull cord, then just send it with no gloves, hammer down, that was awesome man! top content!

Thanks! I was determined to get it going one way or the other yesterday. Supposed to be 50F degrees here Monday so not much time left on the sleds.

The videos outside in the rain and snow are really fun to watch, I'm not sure I would have committed to so many pull starts, but you seemed to know it was gonna go! We got mega snow last night too, and warming up a lot this week, that 500 really seemed to make good power!

Storm here in S.Maine was absolutely TERRIBLE , 2 days now running on Gen pwr , trees down EVERYWHERE . You're content makes it bearable though 😎

Awesome video! My hands would freeze off in that kind of weather a cold day where i live is in the 30s with a wind chill sometimes around 17. Which is nothing compared to cold where you are

Man that feeling when you pull one old snowmobile and it starts to fire, that instantly gives you the extra adrenaline to continue pulling lol. Great job and a fun video!

That machine like all cats from that time frame have a normally closed ignition system, right pain in the ass. I have the same model and year cougar and Im always chasing spark issues. Best to run a kill switch right from the engine plug and bypass the factory key and kill switch. Still not a for sure fix. Jump the black and brown wire at the engine harness plug and see if it runs any better. Good luck!

Always check the throttle safety switch on those cats . I’ve had a ton that coused probs it’s up on the thumb throttle where the pin goes in if you notice the hole is slotted a lil bit . Youl see the wires up there for it. It will sound like carb or electrical probs when it acts up I hope you see this . I think you need to unhook them or twist the 2 wires togather on wire harness side . I’m betting this is ur issue easy fix

Any idea why my -87 cougar doesn't idle? Revs deacent, carbs cleaned, good spark and compression good.

Could be a dried out crank seal. With the engine running spray some carb clean behind the primary clutch, if the rpm’s change is say your seal is sucking air and needs to be replaced. Also check your carb boots to make sure they are not cracked and sucking air.

Hello master. I would like to ask you for advice. I have a 2013 arctic cat 1000 xt. It has 5500 km and 350 operating hours. The compression for the front cylinder is 8.5 bar and 13 bar for the rear cylinder. I don't go in mud or water with it. Valve clearance is good. Maybe a ring is sticking or the exhaust valve is burnt? Best regards, Jocó

Actually on those Arctic cat 1000’s they have a decompression on the front cylinder so it is supposed to be lower than the rear. The book calls for 5.5-8.5 bar on the front And 10-13 bar on the rear. These are cold readings at wide open throttle. So it appears you are in spec if you’re testing cold. The compression readings increase with a hot engine. Are you experiencing issues with your machine?

@@rockspowersports I measured with a cold engine. There are so many problems with it that the spark plug of the first cylinder is constantly broken. After 2 hours of riding, it is already rumbling.

Oh that’s not good, it doesn’t sound like compression is your issue though.
