Very interesting, I hadn't heard of Dial or Irish spring. I have sensitive skin and my mom wouldn't let me have Lux or Camay soap when I was little. The only soap that didn't aggravate my skin was Boots cold cream. The school bully once said to me "your mother buys cheap soap" to which I replied "that's coz we use a lot more of it than your household!" I caught hell for that comment🤨
@@caligulalonghbottom2629 school bullies are not remembered for their brains! Had her come uppance , was a thoroughly miserable adult that drank herself to death!
Caligula Longhbottom Seems normal to me. My mom used to buy dove, which was pretty expensive where we lived, because she didn’t want to be judged for having cheap soap in the house. She used my eczema as an excuse but I never had issues with cheaper soaps because we just put bath oil and lotion on my skin anyway.
I remember as a kid in the 1960's my mom using the Dove soap. She was always getting trouble with infection 😷 ( women trouble) and her gynecologist told her Dove soap. He said to use it because it was mild for her skin etc. My mom said it help with her female problems. 🤷
Heidi Kersey I love dove soap. My mom started me on dove when I was a child. I have tried so many soap but always go back to dove it is the creamiest soap and softens skin
I love Dove soap also. It feel so wonderful when bathing. When my mom went through radiation for breast cancer, she had to use unscented Dove. It helped with the radiation burn and protected her markings for the treatment site.
We were not Hollywood family but we did have all of these that you're showing at one time or another while I was growing up and so you bring back many fond memories and I can even remember the smells when you hold them up so thank you for a memorable video
My Granny used Dove her whole life. She had the softest most beautiful skin. Even into her late eighties ( she passed one month shy of her 90th birthday).
I think it would be really interesting if you did a video on what first class passengers on the titanic probably used and if they’re still available today
Yes! Laura please! I would love it! I know there’s even menus of meals served onboard online, I had thought planning a Titanic and or Somewhere In Time dinner party to introduce all my upcoming bridal party to each other, of course other family & friends should be invited. So perhaps you might try a few items from the menu?
I miss the old scent of pink Camay. Many of the soaps were made in Dayton Ohio by Hewett Soap Company where i live and was raised.Ivory,Camay and Irish Spring to name a few.Its now gone.Closed 10plus years ago.And sadly burned down last year I still use Dial. The berry scent is amazing
I absolutely love Dr Bronner’s. Their bar soap is the best for cleaning makeup brushes and sponges. It’s really hard to find companies that are cruelty free. I would love a video featuring vintage cosmetic brands available today that are cruelty free.
So, it was Lux in America then? I use Pears. And British actress Lily Langtry was paid a heap of $$ just to say she used it! That was in the 19th century. Oh wow, didn't know you'd incl it in your video...thank you!! 💕
Laura what a great video this was. I am a soapaholic. Watching this was a trip down memory lane for me. I am in my fifties. Growing up my mother bought ivory soap then Irish spring for the family which I didn't care for. As a teenager in New York city I used Dove, Pears and Neutrogena. Now I use Claus Porto and Santa Maria Novella soaps-they can cost $25 USD each.
Haha 31 is young for today’s standards, even 40 isn’t old. But in the 30’s, that was like mid 40’s. My great grandma was married in the 1920’s when she was around 35 ish, back then that was considered old to get married, her husband, my great grandfather was 6 years younger than her. She had my grandpa at 36 or 37. She was an attractive woman too, but funny how perception of age changes. I went way off topic lol... as for the video, I love vintage soaps!
I still buy the ambered colored Pears soap. If you ever have dry or sensitive skin it's still one of the best alternatives, I promise! It's a bit of a luxury, I use up a bar in no time.
@@caligulalonghbottom2629 I think it's a hit of sandal wood, but I'm not entirely sure what it is. Neutrogena had a non-scented version, but I haven't seen it in ages.
I looked it up and it looks like the scent have changed over the years, it's suppose to be something with rosemary. I remember I though something had changed from the soap I remember from my childhood. It's years since now, and at the time I had not used it in years. It's made in India now, and if they use essential oils made there, the quality tend to be different from those made in Europe.
@@bagofhammers7479 I can't say it's that bad, but I agree, it's not the same. Lately I have used liquid Neutrogena, and something similar from L'occitane. I wonder if someone out there make soap after the original Pears method?
This was fun! I remember in the '50s and '60s that we gave each other Caswell Massey and Yardley for Christmas. We loved them! Sweetheart soap was for every day, and my dad used Zest as well as some heavy-duty hand soap with pumice in it, Lava. Grandmother would use her potato peeler to scape off some Ivory and boil it in a big pot on the stove to use to launder a delicate hand wash. None of us could stand the smell of Ivory, though - "Like a gas station lavatory" as my grandmother would say. She felt the same way about Camay. Jackie Kennedy made the news when her favorite, Phisohex, was taken off the market for the same reason as Dial. It became Phisoderm. Thanks so much for this fun trip down memory lane. I really enjoyed it!
Nivea used to have a bar soap too. I haven't seen it in a long time. Maja is a Spanish brand that has good smelling vintage soaps. They can be found at CVS. Heno de Pravia is another vintage soap that I love. It also has a body splash with the same name.
Maja body powder and maja face powder is lovely Heno de pravia body splash is very good smell soo fresh Dove i used every single day 💖 Thank you! for mentioning that brands..
I'm from the UK. I am a little old fashioned and still use soap. For some strange reason I don't feel clean using body wash or shower gel. I use Pear's, Imperial Leather, Palmolive and ordered Dial Gold recently off of the Amazon website. Thank you Laura xx.
I really enjoyed this video. I've grown to love bar soap. I use bar soap for my face and body, and a lot of vintage advertising inspired my decision. I also love that so many celebrities used the Erno Laszlo method, which basically incorporated washing the face with a bar of soap. By the way, since I'm commenting, I think you're so pretty! I always admire your hair and makeup.
I use the Erno Lazlo Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar. and lately soap bars are inspiring to me also due to vintage advertising, and one of my icons ever since i was little is Audrey Hepburn. Audrey swore by the Erno Lazlo Sea Mud Deep Cleansing Bar. and the fact that the ingredients still remain the same in it, when i use it, i feel like my icon is right there. I wish i was alive to see her when she was still alive. I was born in 2003. so i am way way late to have seen her. but love her movies, and listening to her talk. ultimate fashion icon, and beauty. such elegance and poise in her. i dream to have the elegance she has. you should definitely give Erno Lazlo a try!
I use Pears soap bars for my face and it has greatly improved my complexion and is so gentle on my sensitive skin. I’ve noticed that It doesn’t leave my skin dry or tight but leaves it feeling clean and hydrated. I have oily skin and while using this soap my skin has became less oily. I highly recommend this soap.
I've used that one but it cleanses almost too well bc it leaves my skin red and irritated if the lather even touches my skin more than once over. I wanted to love it but it's too harsh for my skin. ☹️
I remember when I was in high school that Camay was the epitome of teenage glamour - then Olay Shower Gel hit the scene, followed by Bath and Bodyworks. I miss Camay, and I heard what’s available isn’t the same as the original scent 😔
I love Caswell-Massey and Woods of Windsor. I have been a fan for 30 years. I have tried most of these soaps with the exception of Thayers, Vinolia and Bee and Flower and Kirks.
All my family use Dove I'm the only skin care fanatic who prefers to use actual cleansers and stuff but one time I forgot it when I came back from univeristy and I used the shea butter version and I was surprised that it didnt strip me, but that one time was more than enough for me.
Americans, LOOK FOR CASHMERE BOUQUET if you can still find... Laura, my grandmother's bathroom and hallway smelled of Cashmere Bouquet soap (US). I just looked it up. Says it's been discontinued (just when vintage soaps are more popular). See if you can find any still around. It's always the cheapest. I would buy at the dollar shops just to make my bathroom smell like grandma. Here's the description: Cashmere Bouquet Bath Bar Soap has been a favorite since 1872, but it has now been discontinued. This is your last chance to get the soap that will bring back memories. Ideal for Daily Use, it leaves skin clean and fresh. Works well as a drawer sachet, too. Cashmere Bouquet is known for being triple milled to help it last a long time. Made in the USA. You will receive 2 four ounce bars.
I always loved Irish soap through my teen years. No matter what you will smell good for men and women. As I got older though I always choose things for sensitive skin. Dove is always good.
I use Pears, Jergens, Yardley, Dial and Zest and have used all of the soap in the video except Vinolia and Bee and Flowers and Windsor. Palmolive is my favorite dish soap. My mom used Dial. My grandmother used Lux dish soap and Zest. My great-grandma used Jergens. Camay was always around and smelled so good. I can't find Lux or Camay anymore.
I was in Egypt last summer and there an abundance of camay soap ..... so many different scents . I bought several.... but was disappointed. Not an original scent & just wasn’t feeling the quality. I kept the rest just for fun .
Still: a lot of times look in the Hispanic personal care products section of WalMart and such as it still seems to be widely available there. And depending on the customer base Camay will be stocked not in the general bath soap section but with other products from Mexico in small stores and pharmacies as well. I live in Tucson and have seen it several times looking for a Mexican shampoo brand that supposedly smells just like Herbal Essence from the '70s.
Great job! Ever hear of Coast soap. I luv the scent of this soap because it is so refreshing. While we generally use Dial'a Pure and Natural soap, sometimes I like to buy a bar of Coast to leave it out for its scent.
Kinda Funny ' memory , with Irish Spring Soap. It must have just came out , I was about 4 years old , and I kept on seeing the TV commercial .. the cutting of the soap bar - which my Mom found several cut down soap bars in an emtpy drawer in my room ... I got a spanking ' for . Still into soaps though , I Love my RIP Mom , I forgave Her ( for being Catholic ' ) and still into making soaps . Also really enjoy watching soap makers make n to purchase from too ) I also have a warm spot for the olde ' Companies too 😀 Share the Wealth , there's enough for ALL , Humanity . I want to try ALL , the soap . Soap is such personal thing , with Family too . Getting out of bed and to work is much easier when You have a nice soap waiting for You in the shower .. 🧼 )
I have a funny memory about Irish Spring Soap too! Years ago we had an old farmhouse. In the winters, we'd pack everything away. We forgot to pack away the Irish Spring Soap near the bathtub. When we arrived in the spring, every shred of Irish Spring Soap was eaten by mice --- there wasn't even a sliver of the green soap left. The mice evidently LOVED it!
I prefer bar soap and my guests always make appreciative comments that I have it available I love Yardley and am currently using the oatmeal version. Would like to try Vinola, Kirks and CM. Bee and Flower is pretty but drying. Thanks for the vid!
Laura, I noticed your adorable cherry earrings! On EBay I purchased a cherry necklace that is the same shape of your earrings. It is by the designer Betsy Johnson and is so cute...affordable too! I paid $4.25 with free shipping. So enjoying your videos❤️💐❤️
Perhaps at swap meets of flea markets, Linda. There used to be tons of it for sale at every other vendor it seemed at the Rose Bowl, Pasadena City College and Ventura meets. I wish I had purchased some then. Maybe an order from Amazon is in my future.
I do remember Camay and Ivory. I did not know that it was by accident they made Ivory be able to flat in water pretty cool. I guess I'm pretty old that Zest is considered old
Good morning, Laura. your videos are so interesting. love them. this one is close to my heart. I started using bar soap about months again. I love the dove soap. its so creamy, it doesnt leave a film on my skin. I stopped buying body wash, and just use the bar soap. its so fresh and clean smelling. I do love the yardly as well. thanks for all your videos. btw, your nails and make up are beautiful
Yes to all things vintage beauty! Love this - and I have to tell you Laura I so rarely make purchases based on influencers, but after your dusting powder video, I bought Woods of Windsor (OMG, heavenly!) and a modern one from the Greenwich Bay Trading Company called Fresh Milk (another lovely scent), so a million "thank yous" my dear!❤
Great video!! I have a bar or two each of Lux, Camay, Palmolive, Pears, Ivory, Cetaphil, Dove, Yardley Lavender, Irish Spring, Kirks Castile, Dr. Bronner’s, and and d brand of antibacterial soap I’ve been using for my hands called “Lifebuoy”. Also, I had to order the Vinolia soap right away since I am also a “Titanic” fan.
Great one...l STILL use Ivory and Camay, l love these soaps. I never tried lux. Dial is good also..great orange color and smell. Laura can you do a tutorial on Arthea Franklin..The Queen of Soul. Thanks. People say she love her cosmetics!
Hello Laura, I love your videos!! Thank you for your wonderful inspirational style and information on these vintage products, I love them. Inna ♥️♥️♥️😊
Thank you for this lovely video! I've used most of the soaps you featured, and I still use Kirk's Coconut Castile for it's simplicity, purity, and that it works well in the hard water we have here. I also have Jergens (which was shown in your beginning camera sweep). In my 20's (40 years ago)'. Jergens was popular with my friends and I back then because they sold the big bars of it 4-5 for a dollar - a good soap at a great value.
P&G did a reissue of that original Ivory soap packaging around the turn of the millennium, probably that soap is about 20 yrs old. Thanks for the memories Laura Jean Atelier!!!
Yardley's it's my all time favorite. Doves leaves a sticky feeling. I have used most of those soaps...even the "Neutrogena" shampoo bar. One that is forgotten was a wonderful cleansing bar called "Esthetique". I couldnt found it again and is not even on Google. Excellent product. I miss the original "Zest". It gave you such a refreshing feeling.
Jlyn: they've been promoting it again because of it's germ killing properties. I've seen ads for it a couple of times in the last few weeks. It used to be a deodorant soap like Dial, a big hit in the '60s IIRC.
I had my first baby in Oct. 1970. Dial soap sent a sample for all new mothers while they were still in the hospital claiming it was the the #1 soap hospitals used for newborns. I did use it myself because I had oily skin, but I believe it was too harsh for a baby.
Poliphilvs oh how did I forget that my greatgrams still buys that Italian soap which is only in her on suite bathroom lol in fact now I’m remembering she has a perfume by the same company sitting on her vanity. Glad you mentioned it!
I’ve never been a big fan of soap in bars. I prefer shower gel. But my least favorite of all of them would definitely be dial. I don’t know what it is about it.🤔🧼still loved this video.
I’m so disappointed with Kirk’s it dried my skin out. I read alot of reviews that said it happened. But I will try the rest of these. I also purchased Florida Water which I adore! All these products I learned from you! Thank you!
That's not surprising about Kirk's. It's an all-coconut soap, using unstripped coconut oil that therefore still has the irritating short-chain soaps. Even without them it would be degreasing as soaps go. In general the more C12 (lauric) soap a soap mixture contains, the more grease-cutting, sudsy, and irritating it is. C12 comes from coconut, palm kernel, and (more expensively but less irritatingly) babassu oil. Stripping out the shorter-than-12-carbon fatty acids makes it less irritating without impairing its grease-cutting and sudsing. Conversely, the more C18 (stearic) soap, the less grease-cutting and more demulcent a soap is. In between is in between. Traditionally the longer chain soaps come from tallow, and now largely from vegetable equivalents. Other than Kirk's, bar soaps skewing toward the coconut, high suds end are Silk/Silk Road from Abu Dhabi, Rainbow Research, and then slightly less so with Camay, Lux, and Lifebuoy and then Coast and Dial (regular, not hypoallergenic), which also have extra fatty acid. Ivory is middle-of-the-road, as is Palmolive. Toward the low end, i.e. milder and less sudsy, were the original Dial, Tone, and Pure & Natural.
I use Satya Sai Baba's Nag Champa bar soap, it doesn't irritate my skin, but it rinses clean, and I don't feel sticky afterwards. Have to get it off the internet tho, stores around here don't carry anything but the major brands like Dove, Dial, etc.
