I'll never be as cool as Charlie Duke The man who took his family's portrait to the moon Unless I make it up that way I'll keep my butt on earth and say I'll never be as cool as Charlie Duke
That the Apollo videos are more popular is what it is. As one who finds the Apollo program and its predecessors fascinating, I understand. But I like all Amy's stuff. And if one doesn't, just don't watch. You are being kind in calling those that leave nasty comments turkeys. I fully agree with the recommendation to not let the s%*$ %@!&s get you down!
The Music copyright things sucks and sounds very sus to me, I know Pirate Software fights those things very hard, maybe get in contact with them and see if there's any loopholes the music company is exploiting, RU-vid is dumb when it comes to copyright and it might just be that someone is exploiting it to get at your revenue. But glad to see you're back!
Can't you just re-edit the video and change the music? Take down the old one and put up the new one. Is there something I don't get? It seems as easy as changing a track in the mixer.
@@ml.2770 there are people who illegitimately buy rights to music then route it through some fake company registered in India and auto claim every video that has that music on it. It's absolute bullshit. Happened to Pirate Software with his own music.
@@ml.2770 She may not have a decades worth of old files at the ready to just open and delete the track; deleting old videos screws up your view count and metrics and often results in lost metrics and lost future revenue; it creates broken links on any websites that link to her, so she'd be missing out on those new viewers; it screws with the YT algorithms, and people who viewed/liked her past videos won't see her new videos; it hurts the channel ranking; the algorithm also pushes your stuff out less because you are deleting past posts; i'm sure there's more.
Finding your channel “back in the day” was like catching lightning in a bottle. What you given to us to watch is truly a gift, one that I took for granted, but have missed terribly. I hoped you’d be back and I hope that you find fulfillment in all aspects of your career. I’m so happy you’re back!
Seconding the "What happened?" because so far it sounds absolutely insane. Since when does copyright work that way? People have been getting permission to reproduce copyrighted photos and text in books for a while now. Rights holders have been selling and otherwise losing those rights to new owners for a while now. And maybe that means you have to get permission from the new owner if you want to *republish* that book. But I'm pretty sure new rights holders have not been able to retroactively withdraw permission for use in books that are *already published.* What, would they go to all the libraries and homes and offices that had a copy of the book and seize it? "Former rights holder granted permission for a flat fee, but we're holding out for a dollar per copy. Until the publisher coughs it up, we just can't allow you to read this one any more. So sorry." If that was a thing, you'd think you would have heard about it. Has ever a court ruled that all the royalties from the whole book now belong to the new owner of one photo previously licensed to appear on page 17? What's the jurisprudence if the book uses *two* licensed photos from different owners? Does the whole thing go to whoever makes the asshole move first? There *is* no jurisprudence for that, *because it's crazier than a honey badger on PCP.* Does copyright actually work like that now, or did RU-vid just hire the stupidest intellectual property lawyers in the world?
Woo! Glad to have you back! You need to do what you love, don't let people tell you otherwise. Whenever I've felt useless (or been told it), I've always gone back on my successes. You're a published author, twice! You've had videos seen by over 1M people. That's amazing! Most people just say they're going to do these things, you've done them. There are new YT tools that allow you to remove the music while keeping audio. That may help with monetisation of old videos.
Re background music; why should that be needed? I'd think once you *buy* the rights to use music, that whoever you bought those rights from wouldn't be able to claw them back in order to sell them to someone else. If they can, then you never *owned* them in the first place and if the original seller implied you did, then that would seem to be some kind of false advertising or even fraud. Via Hanlon's razor, I'm going to guess that the new owner just din't bother checking if the users had the rights to use the music and claimed everything. That seems very believable, either via ignorance or lazyness, or just assuming under the assumption that many people won't notice or push back.
@@stormspottertodd might not be worth the money you would have to spend. Maybe be able to reduce that risk by asking the court to order the return of the rights and any earnings stolen in the meantime and agree the lawyer's fee is all the cash damages.
3:40 RU-vid just relased a new AI tool that supposedly allows you to remove copyrighted audio from your existing videos, leaving the rest the audio intact. Worth a try?
That would be fantastic. I hope this works for her. But how can it be that one buys music of a third-party company and the new owner of that company can decide to revoke the right to use that music, especially regarding work that was created before they bought it?
@@nkronert There has to be more to this story than she was willing to tell here. She says the old videos were demonetized, and then says someone else is making money off of them because of the background music. Not sure how any of that can happen; she should consult a lawyer about that and about the revocation of rights she paid for. In any case, stripping the copyrighted audio and re-releasing seems like a good thing to try.
@@BarryH1701 It is. Otherwise it would be Ex Post Facto, which has been found to be against the constitution. Basically, "Ex post facto laws refer to laws that retroactively punish conduct that was legal when originally performed" which is not allowed. Maybe because she is a one-person-show she just got buried by lawyers and can;='t afford to win.
I have been a fan for many years, have read your books, and I will be interested in whatever you have to say, whether it's about Apollo or the novels of James Joyce. I look forward to watching and reading in the future. You are a sincere, committed and engaging professional. Onward and upward.
Enjoyed your space and aviation content because of the unique angles you found, and your audience size indicates I was not alone. If returning works for you and you can find some enjoyment in it, it's really great to have you back. We never left and have been waiting for you.
Here's a mind-blower for you: I wasn't a subscriber (to _any_ channel, until a month or so ago, but) the _algorithm_ served this video up to me this evening. Good luck!
I bought 'Fighting for Space' for my daughters - it was one of the books they read during those early COVID lockdowns. Many thanks for producing it, and whatever you publish next, I'll pre-order it. It's great to have you back!
I read Fighting for Space a few months ago and it was excellent! You are an excellent writer. You provided an informative and highly entertaining narrative for a long overlooked topic. It was very easy to get invested in the ups and downs of Jackie and Jerrie's struggles and triumphs. Looking forward to what you write next!
Yeah same, bought it the moment I could get it as a kindle ebook on german Amazon, and I liked it a lot. It was a bit dry at first, but that was more a me-problem because it's been *years* since I read non-fiction. Once my brain re-adapted, I really like it!
@@kafkaian well that’s a good thought. I don’t know the best way to buy her books in way that would benefit her best. I got them both from Audible. She sounds great on them; by the way she narrates both of them. Which is great. I love her voice and I can’t listen to a book with a voice I don’t enjoy hearing.
It'' s such great news to hear you are back and have the energy again to pick this up. I'm sorry to hear you had to go through such a disappointing time. And the fact that you are getting up after all of that is the most impressive. Good luck with your new endeavours, and I look forward to watching your new stuff!
Amy, You are one of a kind. I followed your work for a long time. I love Mercury, Gemini and Apollo programs with a passion. You have done a magnificent job of presenting the info on the early space program like no one has done before. You can present info on Apollo only for so long. Your interest is in history and you should expand your horizon. I will follow your work no matter what the topic you cover. I am sure thousands of us will be cheering for your success. God bless you!
It sounds like predatory capitalism. "Hey look at all these successful YT channels using this music, let's buy it and steal their monetization. Good idea, yeah f them, losers!"
@@SgtMjr The problem is if they bought the music, it's hard to imagine how they also didn't acquire the obligations and licenses already issued for that intellectual property. In adjacent intellectual property law -- if a company acquires a license to a patent (or patent portfolio), that doesn't just "go away" if someone purchases the patents in question. Those previous rights-to-use don't automatically get extinguished. I'm not an IP lawyer, but I've spent a few hundred hours working with them during patent litigation.
It's also ludicrous, and likely intentionally dishonest on the part of the claimant. If the music was previously licenced by Amy from the then copyright owner, that doesn't just get nullified because they sold the *remaining* rights to a 3rd party. The rights Amy bought weren't part of that deal. Drachinifel has a similar problem with intentional false claims on a piece of music he had the creators permission to use. This was on every video, and in the end the musician just gave up fighting to get control of his own work back one a week from a multinational abusing the copyright system. Which means drach now uses something else as an intro.
@@lmamakos Totally agreed. But chances are they have deeper pockets than Amy and are saying "Sue us if you dare". Sounds like something Martin Shkreli or Logan Paul would do.
@@lmamakos without seeing the paperwork for the use of the music it’s impossible to say why the new owner can put in a claim for money. If forced to guess I’d say the new owner saw the paperwork the original seller had used with all their customers, saw a fault in it and with predatory capitalist glee swept in to buy up the music and then proceeded to screw over all the customers.
It’s great to see you back, and for what it’s worth, I have always enjoyed your long form, detail-rich space launch/exploration and aerospace-adjacent content, especially the less covered Project Gemini, Soviet programs, and other topics. Personally, I really enjoyed the aerospace espionage series including Corona, U-2, and A-12 programs. As an engineer working in space launch, I appreciate how much research you have done to get the technical details and nomenclature correct while still making the topic accessible to a non-technical audience. It sucks that Fighting For Space had a bad launch-it’s a great book-and getting demonitized because of copyright issues you weren’t responsible for and have no control over is terrible, albeit typical for RU-vid. You should look into putting content onto another channel like Nebula that doesn’t hamstring and arbitrarily penalize creators who are just trying to make high quality videos. But regardless, it’s good to see you (and Pete) back, and I look forward to hearing more about the new book project and longer form videos on aerospace history at whatever rate you are comfortable producing them.
I am so happy to hear this! Also, that the algorithm deemed it worthy to show this announcement in my feed. Please don't apologize about taking the time you needed. As another great writer once wrote: if you are going to do something, take your time and do it right. I am sorry to hear of the adversity you had, but I'll trust you'll get to smoother sailing and do more great things. I'm with you, I'm sure many others are too.
My Son watched your videos and played KSP during the pandemic. He has a signed copy of one of your books. He will be starting his fourth year of classes at Michigan Tech this fall. He and I used to call you “Space Flight Amy”! Thanks for sharing a part of you - it DOES matter to us. ❤
Thank you for being so honest. I wish you all the best for your career and I am overly excited for your new content. This is one of my favorite channels on RU-vid (been with you for over 12 years) and loved every bit of it. Keep going - you're awesome. Greetings from Germany :)
I'm so sorry to hear you went through these struggles, but I'm glad to hear that you've weathered the storm and are back to working on something you're passionate about.
Welcome back Amy. I and everyone else have missed your highly intelligent and informative content. Although at least we’ve had the teasing shorts you posted, but missed the longer videos. As far as I’m concerned any videos you post are bound to be well researched and highly informative. There’s a lot happening in the space world atm, near earth objects, and a lot of other stuff including ufo’s that at least I would be happy to watch. You’re not a failure Amy, far from it and with COVID, as you know a lot of businesses went bust and a lot of crap went down, just bad timing. Don’t be so hard on yourself, you’ll always have a home here. So happy to see you back😊
I've read a lot of comments and this is one of the best, it just says what a lot of us are thinking but in a way that conveys support, understanding and encouragement in equal measures.
Vintage Space has been an amazing series; so much fascinating space history that I had no idea about. I fear that the algorithms will be quite different to even 3 years ago though; and hope it doesn't lead to too much clickbait and short-form content.
So much respect. I can't imagine going through all of that, but I'm so glad you're back. Your videos were always fascinating - and not just the Apollo ones! Looking forward to the next chapter of your channel and will absolutely be sticking around.
Thanks for telling us what you have been going through. Your work is the closest thing to having grown up paying attention to the aviation and space scene as it developed. I was born in 1949 and followed developments intensively starting in about 1957. Your work is the best alternative to actually having been there. But it is so much more. Your in-depth research gives us so much insight into why things developed the way they did. You are a gem. Don't stop believing in yourself. Ok, take a vacation when you need it though.
Well I am glad you're back! I didn't know you had a book out and I have just ordered it for my wife's birthday next month, so thank you! She love vintage and space-related stuff, so it's a perfect gift for her :)
YES!!!! Welcome back Amy! So excites to see a video from you! I have watched you for years and love everything you do! I work at the Cosmosphere, I know you visited years ago! I actually showed one of your video's to some of our campers about staging and told them you were an amazing youtuber and author! We sell fighting for space in our gift shop! Maybe with your next book release you could come do a book signing with us! We are doing tons of renovations to the museum as well! I would totally get you in to do a behind the scenes collections tour!!
So glad to see you back! I’m a 67 year old “Cold War kid” who grew up in a suburb of Cincinnati where GE Aircraft Engines was the major employer and visits to the Air Force Museam were regular day trips for our family. I am so sorry to hear about the difficulties you faced as an author and content creator. I really would like to get a copy of your book “Fighting for Space”,
We “met” online at the COVID Yuri’s Night and had a fascinating conversation. I went from that weird zoom meeting thing straight to my local library’s website to place a hold on _Fighting for Space,_ a hold that I waited for anxiously for months. When it finally arrived, I read the entire thing in like a week and loved every minute of it. I’m really sorry to hear the backend of that story, but I’m thrilled you’re back. Can’t wait to watch and read what comes next!
You were an inspiration for starting my own space channel years ago - thank you! I did a video with Dr. Alan Stern (PI on New Horizons) and in searching for archival footage of that mission that the NH team provided, I happened to see an interview you did with them (probably in 2015 or so) and it was such a full circle moment. We will definitely be tuning in and rooting for you!
I love ANYTHING that comes from Vintage Space! So happy to see you back and that all of your supporters can go through this change with you. I'm looking forward to seeing all of what you have coming up :D
Hi, Amy! Thank you for the update on how you've been doing. Whenever your old videos would pop up, I wondered how you were. I had seen some of your previous posts about what happened to Fighting for Space, so I understood you were going through challenging times. I'm sorry to hear it was more complicated behind the scenes and affected you deeply. I'm glad you're giving yourself a fresh start. You deserve good things in life! Keeping fighting for your space!
Impressed at your candidness and vulnerability. I've been following since the early days, have your book, and loved it. I'm so sorry about losing monetization on your past videos - what a gut punch! I hope maybe you can get those re-released with different music, somehow. Excited to see the new content!
What a special Day!!! It's obvious that with this being posted only an hour ago and already over 3K thumbs up......I think it's pretty darn safe to say you have been missed!!!! You are an amazing person......just do what you find in your heart......those of us that adore you will follow!!! Being vintage myself and remembering as a kid watching Sputnik fly across the sky.....I love it all....Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and beyond!
Definitely happy to see you back! Personally, I wish Space Shuttles were already included under the umbrella of Vintage Space. I still remember the talks of a batch of second generation shuttles, the production models. Stubby wings on main fuel tank, better heat shield, 100% reusable. Would have rather seen those than Quark and his Ferengi Pods…
Yay! I'm so sorry, it's been so long I had almost forgot I was subscribed! You just stopped popping up in my feed that I forgot it existed. I'm glad you're back and totally understand your absence. I can't wait to see your future videos. As someone who grew up in Florida near Kennedy Space Center, I was fascinated by Space exploration and Astronomy my entire childhood. Also, here's a little something neat for you to read. I'm the son of one of the few managers of the to run the Shuttle Landing Facility on Kennedy. My father, Robert B. (went by Bob his adult life) was the manager of that facility where the Shuttle Landed in Florida from 1995 until 1999 under EG&G, the contractor that NASA hired to run it. Later, when Northrop Grumman won the contract bid in 1999, he was laid off, but was asked to return a year later by that company as they realized, in a nutshell, that my dad could do it better. So, he came back and ran the facility along with the Skidstrip at Cape Canaveral and the main airfield at the then Patrick Air Force Base (the base in which he retired from the Air Force at when I was 14) until the Shuttle Program was shut down. A sad day as he was once again laid off. Still, that was an amazing experience as a kid, I got to ride my bike on the runway the Shuttle landed on! My dad was friends with Astronauts, and one of them even came to my Eagle Scout ceremony! My father, a 25 year USAF veteran worked for the VA helping other vets until his passing in 2014. Thanks for reading my family's contribution to American Space Travel. Again, I can't wait to see more of your videos!
Welcome back! Besides your vintage space videos, I loved seeing the mid century furniture that often was part of the background. I am looking forward to what you want to talk about outside of space. All of us are more than one subject. Again, welcome back.
I have purchased, read, and absolutely enjoyed both of your books. You have loyal fans everywhere. I lived through and followed the Gemini and Apollo programs, and relish the insights and info you have provided. You are very good at what you do. Please, please continue. Keep plugging away.
So while I will always think of you as the “Apollo Lady” regardless of the subject matter i have found your style interesting and soothing. your videos have been ones that I could always call up and play to keep my mind engaged while working on repetitive motion projects , whether its folding laundry , shoveling snow, or pruning a crab apple tree you have been that voice that informs and sparks the imagination
Welcome back! Amy is a wonderful storyteller… she talk about grass growing and paint drying, and she would find a way to make it stimulating. _¡Analytics and algorithms be damned!_
I'm happy to see you back. Thanks for opening up. I had no idea of all the things happening behind the scenes. For me personally, I just like learning about history. So any video you want to do even if it's not specifically space or Apollo is totally ok.
I'm so glad that you're back! I've missed you! I'm so sorry to hear about all the trouble you had, I wish you all the best going forward. I'm looking forward to all upcoming content, both space related and not. ❤
Amy, thanks for the update and thank you even more for not giving up. You provide great material, space or non space, and I have enjoyed reading both your books. I thoroughly enjoyed reading Fighting for Space, even during COVID. Keep up the great work and please know you’ll always have a fan here.
So excited to hear you're coming back! I for one loved both of your books and have recommend Fighting for Space to everyone I can, so I can't wait to hear what your next book will be about.
Mental health is so important - and so underrated. I'm glad you took the time you needed. And I'm even happier to see you back. I've always enjoyed the space flight oriented videos, as that was a defining part of my childhood. My father worked as an engineer in the space industry, and I remember him always being at work during the major (and not so major) rocket launches. Looking forward to whatever content you plan to add!
Glad to see you return. I loved “Fighting For Space.” I’ve read some other space related books and wished it was a subject that you wrote about. “Space” and “Breaking the Chains of Gravity” quickly became two of my favorite nonfiction books. Looking forward to the next book and the unknown project. Give Pete some pets for me.
Hooray!!! As someone about to embark on an educational RU-vid channel, I have my inspirations on YT, Anton Petrov, Dr. Becky, Sabine Hossenfelder, Simon Whistler, etc, and yourself. The work you did for the Apollo Chronicles brought a youthful perspective of a young historian, rather than just interviews with aging astronauts and engineers (yes, they are heroes, but having additional perspective is important!). Keep up the great work!
Welcome back. Looking forward to your new content. Had the pleasure of meeting you in Tucson, AZ ‘bout 5-6 years ago at a Space Convention where I got your autograph in your first book along with a photo. Take care.
