HI I LOVE YOU. I forgot to mention the brand of my winter boots (not that they're vintage or anything), but they're "Spring Step". Also didn't mention any thermal wear since I don't have any, but that would definitely help too! If you guys have any tips on what you guys wear to combat the cold, be sure to leave them in the comments!

I have no experience wearing vintage style in winter (or any season) but I recommended knitted wool socks. I think every one in Finland have at least one pair of them, but I don't know are you familiar with these. I'm sorry for my bad english, I'm just 13 years old girl from Finland who would love to start building my vintage closet but all vintage (or even vintage stylish) clothes are too big for me. Btw I love your videos💞

I dress Edwardian and sew my own clothes and trust me nothing feels better than putting on a camisole, than corset, than corset cover, than blouse. And layering thighs. And a long wool skirt. And I don't ever get cold. Like walking through knee high snow and taking off my coat because I was hot. Friend thought I was crazy when he saw me like that. But it's so comfy😊

as far as I know did vintage ladies layer up like no tomorrow when it got really cold. Since clothes were a lot more expensive back then, that could also mean grandpas old trousers underneath, or an old mans coats over everything else. They layered with what they had. But I guess they were not keen on getting fotographed like that, so most pictures seem to be of the rare occasions where they dressed up and cold be damned, because what will the in laws think if I turn up wearing winter boots! But one can save a lot the outfit with an awesome coat, so I really agree with you for that it is the most important :) I also like my long woolen skirts, aaaand underskirts help also a lot. layers layers layers! :)

Your total right because having you photo taken was not like today as film was price so there did not photograph the ever day lives it was more to remember a special day and no one wants the photo taken when they don’t look there best so like today photos they probably staged to look nice and then they all probably put back on there warm less nice looking clothes

Sometimes I even layer skirts to keep my legs a little warmer. My favorite combo is a ruffly cotton skirt underneath, which provides a lot of air pockets to trap heat, and wool on the outer layer. I've heard the key to staying warm is providing small air spaces (avoiding skin tight stuff aside from tights) around your body which can trap the warmth you make and keep you cozy. As an habitually cold person, though, I'm just going to have to be okay with looking like a cute sausage in the winter with all my layers.

Great video ! I never comment on anything (too shy, and English is not my first language, please be kind) but there are some tips that my grandma and mama gave me too keep warm and look fabulous in Parisian winter : If you are wearing a skirt : a slip and has many petticoats has you can fit under your skirt, without looking funny. Wool, thick cotton, velour or cashmere is the best to keep warm. On a regular basis, fabric from natural fibers are usually the best. Even if it make clothes more expensive, they usually last longer. (I can still wear the linen and cotton dresses from my great-grandma, and she was not kind with her clothes) Gloves : I wear two pairs ! I get some thin undergloves from winter sports shops and I add my pretty winter gloves on top, when it starts snowning. Multiple layers : For everything, really. I do the same thing with socks that I do with gloves ! My grandma would make me change if I did not were a tanktop under my shirt, and then my sweater and jacket/coat. On a very cold day I can wear up to 5 layers outside and 3 layers when I'm Inside. Shoes : invest in a very good pair and take care of it. I took me way too many shops but I found a pair of ankle high leather boots that I love. They were a bit expensive but I've been wearing then for 3 year (expect in the summer) I clean and wax (is it the good word?) them every month or so, and have the end of the heel replaced every year. Always carry an ombrella, especially if you do not own a good raincoat ! Winter fabrics are thick and take a lot of time to dry, getting then wet during the day is your worst ennemy, if you cannot change you'll end up sick ! And there is nothing worse than leaving school (or work) and noticing that your coat is still wet from the morning. My mama general advice on clothes : when you can spend money, you should buy expensive clothes if you are sure that they will last you ten years. You'll stop wearing a good suit when it no longer fits, not because it is falling appart at the seams. Love from France, you are a wonderfull and precious human being. Your videos are always a ray of sunshine in my day. Sorry for any English mistakes.

In my books, if you need an umbrella, it is not winter but autumn or spring. Winter equals freezing. But I do agree on the clothing part. Also to keep your shoes in shape, get two pairs. If you wear shoes for some hours, they need to rest one day before next use.

OK so I used to live in the cold tundra snowlands. The very first layer on the skin was silk long underwear. Wintersilks makes the thinnest lightest warmest! I could wear that under the rest of my clothes and I was ok. As long as my feet stayed warm and dry. First layer needs to be long sleeve, or I would freeze.

It's so interesting that I have the opposite experience. I live in the south where it gets much too hot and doesn't get that cold in winter, hardly ever snows or gets below 30 degrees in winter but we have plenty of summer days well above 100 degrees and high humidity. It is easier for me to dress stylishly (dandy/vintage menswear) in colder weather because I like to layer! Sometimes on the hottest days, wearing a short sleeve dress shirt and a vest and tie is just too hot and I don't like shorts so I'm stuck with jeans or slacks. But I can always add a cardigan and blazer over my dress shirt and vest (maybe even a tank top under all that) and put warm leggings under my slacks in the coldest weather. But I know if I wore dresses or skirts they would be so practical in summer, but I am just not a dress girl whatsoever!

Some people are always cold and can't get warm enough. It is like the cold goes down to their bones. But I can always add more layers, blanket, heating pad, etc and be fine that way. At some point it gets so hot, but I can't take off any more. I cannot take my skin off!

I feel your pain (though I love my skirts, mostly because I found out at an early age that most pants are not made to fit me and I’ve hated them all ever since). But I do live in Brisbane, Australia. If there’s one thing we in Queensland are known for, it’s the heat. And the humidity. And probably also the massive coral reef. But mostly the heat.

I had my mink shawl coat design 1950 vintage and a 1920 mink hat to match, my reversible bomber jacket is made vintage 1941 with mink on one side and lambskin on the other side and the hat I design myself, I also have another mink French beret hat with a vintage design shawl sweater. I really did not think about vintage clothing but love the 1950's design coats and everywhere I go a lot of older people ask if my mink coats are vintage. A beret hat style will really look great on you and it is a vintage style which will compliment your vintage coat. Now, I am taking up sewing my own vintage garments; a 1940's blouse which looks just like purchased at a vintage store. I will be sewing a 1941 dress out of rayon knit with flowers which were popular in that year. I only have been sewing for 3 months and collected vintage patterns; I can purchase vintage fabric which is great. great video

I live in Boston!! And I've got some additional tips. I don't wear vintage really but I do wear ONLY skirts, no pants, and I have to walk to work no matter the weather. Most of my skirts are wool and all below the knee at least. I have all thick knit leggings and fleece-lined tights, and I'll often double or triple them when it's particularly cold. Whatever has the smoothest surface goes inside because that's easier to slip on or off. I'm sure wearing regular pants under a skirt could work great but don't rule out wearing tights under even those, and never be afraid to triple your socks, especially if your boots aren't too insulated or you want to wear another type of shoe. In my experience wool is significantly less insulating than goose down BUT very good with wind resistance. I've been looking into some fleece lined tank tops and other under-layers because I know even just wearing an extra shirt can help a lot.

Just came across this and had to comment: my maternal grandmother told me years ago that winter time here in North East Tennessee was a colder than say in the past 40 years or so and around here the ladies actually wore flannel petticoats and like WW2 heavy cotton stockings. Plus ankle or shin high over shoes. Also rabbit fur ear muffs and hand muffs. Probably even some heavier cotton gloves that came up midway between wrist and elbow. I can remember some of those things from when I was very young, especially on women at church.

Personnal tip: if you live someone that gets a lot of snow, go for skirts that reach mid-calf instead of full length. That way it won't drag in the snow and sand and salt, and your boots will cover the exposed part of your legs anyway.

I'm so glad that we don't have that cold weather where I live. The coldest it gets, and that's usually at night, is around 34F. But I do enjoy bundling up. Need a new coat after seeing yours. It is harder to dress vintage when it's cold. I can't wait for spring.

Very useful video! Weather is getting cold again here in Portland, OR. For some reason the weather always gets warmer in January then snaps back in February. I have some thermal wear tips too: Uniqlo's heattech line. They have lots of different styles so it's easy to find something that will work underneath vintage pieces. It's a little pricey, but I've been using the same pieces for 4 years. Also, back in the day, people (regardless of gender) would wear shoe covers over nicer footwear in the winter, sometimes lined with fur other warm materials.

you can find things in odd places if you know what to look for. I found a vintage look coat at Old Navy probably 10 yrs ago at this point, just had to fix the cheap lining. I live in Rhode Island, my desk drawer at work is full of cute shoes in the winter, so I just commute in my winter boots. Layers are the way to go. I previously had a 20 min walk to my office, bought a kiddie snow overall that I wore over my work clothing and removed when I got to the office, co-workers though I was weird, but I was warm, and could still dress cute!

Ooooh, you're not wearing an underskirt/ underdress, especially in winter!? 😱❄ Sacrilege! Some people have mentioned it, I think silken underwear is a great start in winter. 👍🏻 Also I now understand that part from "Swing Time" (1936) so much better, when Fred&Ginger go to the countryside in winter, the snow is almost knee high and she's wearing the *thickest* fur coat but basically pumps with it. And then she's like all romantically "I'm cold..." 😟 And Freddie's like "You know, you'd wanna be wearing galoshes." 😳 Hahaha, that is hilarious, now especially after all the explanations here. 😂🤭 Thank you, you're all great! 🥰

Really great tips! I've enjoyed discovering your vintage channel. :D Here are some of my tips from super chilly Sweden. I'd go for a nice undershirt of "winter"-silk (?). It is a tank-top of thicker silk, which means it will keep you warm but also it breaths, so you don't expire from heat when you're inside (I hear good things about bamboo too). It's not very expensive either. As it is on underneath it won't show as too modern and ruin a beautifully put together outfit. Wool is a running theme for Swedish winters. Wool sweaters, wool leggings, wool underwear, wool everything. Wool-socks are awesome worn in slightly bigger lace ups. We have a special kind of thick woollen sock called "raggsockor" ( apparently translates as teal socks?) that are popular to this day. Also, did a search for the kind of shoes my grandmother's generation would've worn. Mostly lace ups but ski boots were worn for everyday as well: goo.gl/images/RgMBXu goo.gl/images/6fUas8 goo.gl/images/FpFBHk goo.gl/images/aVjJgf Looking forward to watching more of your vids!

I have a few tips! 1. Wear pants under a skirt. If the skirt is long it won't be as noticeable! 2. This is something I know old folk ladies would do- Wool socks! 3. Back to the old ladies- If you notice how Matryoshkas look, you can tie yourself up that way. You may look like a ball-shaped old lady, but it works to keep warm. Basically, look to Russians if you want to know how to keep warm. 3. Put cotton balls in your ears. I have to do this because otherwise, my ears will hurt from the wind. 4. Fur coats can be pretty vintage, as can anything fur. Hope it helps!

Rachel, my mom had lovely black suede high heel booties from her youth in the late 1940s with a wool lining and real black fur around the ankles. I was dying for them, but my feet never fit them. (Great sadness). She also wore galoshes over her everyday shoes for rain and snow. Not very glamorous, but it was the thing back then for women and men to protect their shoes. And she said they always wore pantyhose. They never went bare legged after a certain age, especially if they had jobs. I have a photo of her in a beautiful gray suit in the 1950s before she went to Europe. You’d love it, especially her hat. Just thought you’d like to know a few tidbits about that era.

My mother was born in 1928, so she was in school between the years 1934 and 1946, when she graduated from high school. I have it from her, at least, that when she was a little girl, they absolutely were never allowed to wear trousers to school. She grew up in Kansas, which was pretty bleedin' co!d, and I used to ask her, horrified, how she kept her legs warm. She basically said they didn't. It was either go bare-legged, or wear long underwear pants under your skirt. I remember thinking that was barbaric. I just discovered your wonderful content. I love watching you. I'm old enough to be your mom, but your style reminds me so much of MY mom. You make me feel maternal and miss my mom at the same time. Trippy. But lovely.

Oo nice! it's so hard for me to make an effort to be fancy in winter, if it's cold I dont care what I look like then when I'm out its like 'aw....I care what I look like' I'm from southern California and anything below 75° makes me want to die so I respect your strength living and commuting in real winter lol

You are soo lucky to have your Grandmas house. We rent and its the pits. love your blouse. People are always asking me if I am cold, but my long dresses keep me toasty.

Ohmygoodness, super good tips, adore your style as always (need more wool skirts in my life now)!!! It took this California girl living through 3 Swedish winters + 2 now in New York to feel like I finally could still feel cute and like I'm showing my style during the cold months! My go to is a vintage style velvet turban, so warm and totally gives that vintage vibe! Oh, and also a knitted ascot instead of a scarf! :)

I love your blouse! The details on the sleeves are so super cute! I will say that any of the ladies who want to wear vintage style shapewear like a girdle will have a toasty middle. I tried a girdle out for a few days just to see what it was like, and it about burned me up. I felt like a toasty little sausage. Lol

I live in Finland where winter can be quite extreme :D so I HIGHLY recommend lots of layers and take a good look on material of your clothes. A long coat won't do anything for you if its made of acrylic or polyester etc. You'll simply freeze. So wear wool! Woolen tights, woolen coat that has good lining. Also silk keeps you warm. Fo example silk top under wool sweater. Sorry, if you are vegan, but it will be so difficult for you here in winter if you refuse to wear according to weather

so my protip for wearing dresses/ skirts in winter and staying warm is ice skating tights. those things are seriously warm and they last.

Thanks for this video! Loads of useful tips. My favourite winter coat is a dark blue Collectif 'Pearl' coat I bought in last year's January sale (I buy everything on sale!). It's beautiful. Most of their coats are 50% off online at the moment. Before you ask, I don't work for them; I just love their stuff! Just wondering what types of hats you vintage gals would recommend for winter? x

Layering... Cuddle duds leggings. Knee high hand knitted wool socks. Water resistant boots - I don't care on looks here, but keeping my feet dry. A flannel petticoat or two. Wool skirt. A silk undershirt. A blouse I like. A sweater on top My long wool coat - was a men's, I've fixed it to fit me. A silk scarf over my head. My grandpa's wool and fur hat - it's still good, I'm wearing it until it falls apart. A wool scarf over my face.

Pro Tip from someone who is outside most of the day (even in winter at -10°C). Get insulated tights!!! They look like nylons but but they are warmer then any regular pants I ever owned. Yiu can get them on Amazon.
