Hi Lance. Ever experienced any bozak aluminium cones? I have some B-2000. 3 ways. And let me tell you they are all aliminium. Tweets included. 1960. Crossovers all parralel capacitance I replaced with new film. But ill say one thing. They didn't need it. I'd like this genuinely friendly and smart man to tell us about himself. What you listen to? @@rowgli Re-coning would likely change the character, unless OEM cones are used. I had new surrounds put on my vintage JBL drivers, keeping the original cones. Dust caps were also replaced, but it didn't change the original sound.
@lancehuttsell3878

@@rowgli yes reconing will change their tonal qualities usually for the better the cones get dry and brittle and the tonal quality sounds the same as the cardboard, so when you put a new one on there you get a much deeper richer sound or better Bass... also a better mid-range and a sweeter tweeter...

My way of thinking is, any speaker, new, or old, if you like the sound, then every 12 years put new surrounds, and suspensions in them. If you use them with a lot of power, build some new crossovers every 12 to 15 years. I call it maintenance really, and you'll be glad you did, because they'll sound amazing!

@nbk1943 3 года назад
Hi Michael Can you explain more on the surround/suspension?
@michaelgaddy8271
@michaelgaddy8271 3 года назад
@@nbk1943 the surrounds are the foam or rubber at the top of the speaker cone. It fastens the speaker cone to the speaker basket, and they start to deteriorate over time causing the upper end to get out of alignment. The suspension is at the bottom of the cone, and the same can happen. It cost about $30-40 per speaker, but worth every penny if you love the sound they make. If you don't know of a speaker repair shop, ask a general manager at the movie theater, they'll know someone. I hope this helps.

Some vintage loudspeakers (the LS3/5a, Quad ELS 57 and Linn Isobarik spring to mind) have never been bettered at what they do best. Interesting point is a good 1957 system (say, for instance, Garrard 401 / SME arm / Shure cartridge with Quad valve amplification and Quad Electrostatics) could still hold its head high among some of the most rarefied audiophile systems. In my opinion the main benefit of advanced technology is not necessarily "reinventing the wheel" but allowing significant quality improvements to channel down into more affordable components.

Pretty much. But I think when you look at the big picture with vintage audio, you’d have to spend a lot more money on contemporary equipment than you would with a few hundred bucks and a few months scouring Facebook marketplace. You can get a genuinely respectable audio system for ~$350 with vintage equipment. Amplification wise, I’d say a decent modern class D is good enough for a start, if your speakers are good and the amp is a decent match. Simply because amps can be a bit annoying with oxidized controls, capacitors going out, that a beginner or even moderate stereo enthusiast typically lacks the experience to deal with, and it can be expensive. Sure, some cheaper klipsch speakers might be a bit more revealing. But they really can’t capture the scope or attack of some old massive powerful loudspeakers.. or how the sound wafts in the air. They also tend to dig lower bass wise than many modern bookshelves. Again all of this in the sense that you’d have to spend quite a bit more to match the vintage tech.

Modern speakers have the potential to sound amazing, the problem imo is in the voicing of the speaker, at first they sound very transparent and detailed but in reality they don't sound natural and are very fatiguing. I think harbeth are one of the few exceptions to this but they need dragging into the 21st century to make use of the best driver designs available.

I have Vitage (late 80s) TAD speakers. It doesn't have the amazing power resistance capabilities of current drivers that can put 300w at good use. They take max 160w, and 60w continuous. That's their largest caveat, and their crossover parts. Those were upgraded to modern poly caps and inductors. Beside that, they compare one to one to ATC SCM100 and then some.

This is subjective again. Guys listening to speakers in 60s, 70s or 80s develop a certain taste. A young audiophile listening in 2020 to Zu dirty weekend may not prefer that vintage sound. Because he/she didn’t grow up with it. I am told by rigid audiophiles that old SME tone arms & old vintage turntables are best for listening to pre 80’s music. My question is why are new space age titanium tone arms being developed? Why air suspended platters? To improve the sound🤔? Same applies to speakers

Yep, exposure and, sometimes, associated events tie a little nostalgia to a lot of accidental ear training as we grow and listen - I grew up listening to very cheap stereo gear and the 1st stereo I bought sounded great to me becasue it was in the ball park of what i was used to. I was slowly exposed to better gear and so my taste and analysis became better over time. When I was given a pair of mid 70 AR speakers, (4x I think), in the mid 80s I was blown away again.

They are bit bigger but that is because they have a closed cabinet. Much better bass control and no mudding the vocals. So it depends. The Rogers LS3/5A from 1975 is a great bookshelf speaker and much better than most bookshelves you can buy new today. Speakers aren't better because they are modern or vintage. Speakers are better because they have been carefully designed with love for music.

JBL made a corner-horn? I thought that was only a Klipsch trick?
@alishadlu9730
@alishadlu9730 3 года назад
Dear paul You meant klipsch corner horns not JBLs, yes .? Another point is when you talk about multiple middle range drivers on the IRTs vs an excellent midrange driver that preferably inbodys high frequency driver in the middle of it what happens the advantage of the point source concept in speaker design..? I have not listed to the infinity ultimate reference towers ( I have listened to the smaller towers) , do not they overwhelm your listening room? Dynamic I am sure they are but how seamless and how transparent can they sound ? By the way I am a big fan since your early years.

I havent found many modern speakers that sound better than my ADS L810s from the 80s. Vintage ADS & Canton seem to hang pretty darn good with modern equivalents.

Vintage electrostatic (not magnestatic) speakers tend to hold up very good (sound quality) compared to modern speakers. A good friend of mine owns a pair of Koss 1-A full range electrostatic speakers he got for under $2000 used, did a bit of restoration work on them, and now has something that sounds as good as modern, brand new speakers that would cost at 5 times as much.

my impression is modern speakers are faster and more detailed. but in regards to just the musical presence, it seems modern speakers are more genre driven. not all around music.

A few weeks ago I listened to an interview with Eric Alexander of Tekton Speakers (built next door in Utah). He talked about how the seven speakers in their mid-treble arrays are all carefully matched, and they wind up throwing speakers that are too far out of spec into the dumpster. It was kind of unsettling to hear you describe how individual speakers in a large array could be "loafers"; that the speakers are designed so that "loafers" don't really matter. I think I'm leaning towards Tekton's take on this issue...
@rosswarren436
@rosswarren436 3 года назад
I think he means not that the loafers can be low quality, but rather that they are all of high quality, but since they are each only carrying a very small part of the load (making the music) they can do so far more linearly and accurately without introducing distortion. A good driver played at a modest volume will always sound better than one played hard. Tekton is good to throw out any driver that would not sonically match the others. Good for them.

I lpve hearing speaker distortion, I like hearing a speaker pushed hard and compressing a bit, I like the "sound" of speakers despite the leaps that modern technology and materials have done to make them invisible (or inaudible). I think our brain knows when an actual acoustic event is taking place rather than an emulation of one.

You really cant beat a large vintage speaker for scale and room thumping bass, possibly because many of them were more efficient. Just listen to tannoy Westminster's, JBLs or even jordon watts in a properly designed cabinets. I'm still using tannoy 609 mk2 speakers and I amaze visitors when they hear them .

I have a pair of Jordan Watts in my office, they sound fantastic through an old 1975 Sansui amp. Very natural sound and fatigue never sets in with these speakers, I love them. It’s hard to believe the technology is from the 1960’s but that’s the genius of Ted Jordan.

Yes, I am also asking this question myself. How do old vintage speakers hold up these days? Like Wharfedenton from the 70s or 80s compared to the latest Denton 85? Old Klipsch to newer Klipsch? and so on We have to limit 1 term tho' --> Bass is definitely a lot better on newer speakers in general.

Price point, gross margin and WAF. You need it to sell and make money. Not many people will be in the market for a $150k speaker that requires its own 2500 sq ft room.

@@joshua43214 IMHO the room is too small. Yes the people that dedicate a room to this hobby and can afford 6 figure speakers can find a room for them. I am in that camp. But also not a big market and lots of suppliers. Based on what I have seen, PS Audio is targeting a price point of sub $30k and a look that could fit into the living room of an understanding spouse. More of those buyers out there.

I was listening to some Thiel 3.6's which sound pretty god but then I decided to take them out and try some original large Advent speakers I had just fixed and the Advents seemed more musical and better balanced. The Thiels had more detail in the highs but I would rather listen to the Advents for their overall musicality. I listen to Acoustats at home and have heard nothing better. I prefer them to Martin Logans and Magnepans and even the IRS's.
