I have a Pioneer PL-516 and PL-540. The 516 is like a bac up or for sale. My 540 is my baby. It is a DD turntable, and I can't praise it enough. It has a Nagaoka MP-110 cartridge with an elliptical stylus, and the sound is amazing. All the warmth and brilliance I remember when I bought the PL-540 new. This 540 is a replacement...😊

I have vintage equipment, and none of my friends/relatives even have stereos anymore. I need to literally pack up my stereo, some records and drag it to an audio store that will play side by side equipment to convince me I should spend thousands to upgrade my equipment. How much thousands to reach a wow moment? Marginal quality improvements aren't justifiable for me. Listening to music on RU-vid is not doing to differentiate it for me. If I won a lottery I probably wood build a room and spend frivolously. I am VERY conservative with my money. I hope you get your furniture sorted with this company. I have seen some shows exposing companies that do various things...I hope it works out. You're a great person and as always this is another great video

"none of my friends even have stereos" - it may be even worse. In my country most people under 30 just don't listen to music, any music, it's not part of their world. Fifty years ago, when my generation grew up, probably one kid out of five was somehow involved, today it's probably one in a hundred.

Hi, Melinda. What wonderful foresight you have to pack and move your music given the delay you’re experiencing with the rest of your household belongings. I’m sure too that the rest will arrive in a day or two. It’s in everyone’s best interest that it does. Like you, I love the new digital technology and appreciate the great analogue sound we grew up on. And I love the way the older music carries me back to earlier times. My love for the music of the 60s and 70s has kept me young at heart, and the remastered and even remixed reissues of today make the classics sound as if they were made this year. It’s just a great time to revisit the music we grew up on and that carried us through our youth. You look as though you have an amazing record collection. What a joy it must be for you. Congrats on your move to sunny Florida and this new chapter in you and your family’s life.

I've used a Pioneer pl518 for several years. I put on a SoundSmith Otello cartridge, a better tt mat, better feet and a record clamp over that time. That tt sounded pretty good, but not great. I had a Pro-ject Perspective with a bad tonearm for about 20 years. I brought it out, replaced the tonearm with a new in box carbon fiber tonearm, new belt, much cleaning and fiddling to get it working well and put the Otello on. It is just better. Better frequency response across the board, better dynamics, better soundstage. The Pioneer is a pretty good tt, but not in the same league. Thanks for your video.

Melinda, my take on turntables is that the cartridge makes the sound, and the turntable, if it doesn't have any mechanical issues that limit its abity to keep the cartridge in the groove, has little impact on the sound. So, following this logic, your comparison was really between the cartridge on the PL-516 and the Rega. It would be interesting to hear how the PL-516 sounds with the cartridge on your Rega (and vice-versa). Would you be willing to do this comparison? I think it would be enlightening to your subscribers. I personally own a PL-518 from 1978 (I bought it and the cartridge new) with a vintage Shure V-15 type IV cartridge, and it sounds very nice, especially when playing high end pressings. I'm not sure I could hear any difference if I had a turntable costing many thousands. And for reference, I spent quite a bit more on my cartridge than I did on my turntable. If money were no object, I would keep what I have or buy a new (modern) cartridge when my stylus wears out, but that'll be a sad day.

if it was like you said , one would buy the cheapest turntable and a good cartridge but see what that does with pro-Ject turntables till a litle more than 1.000€ if in dollars, add a couple of hundreds and notice the worst sound ever or maybe unheardable if not a 100 watts amplifier real ones not (DIN) or 2ohms or whaever they do to lie about the quality of what they´re selling, old turntables if you take them apart there is a litle integrated circuit with some resistances, electrolic capaciteurs and just regular capaciteurs to drive the sound readen`by the stylus and through the cartridge converted in a better signal to the litle integrated board to which the RCA plugs are conected to, it´s the same of having a very good turntable and conected a cheap cartridge and stylus and it will not sound so bad as in modern cheap turntables , well till 1.000 €´s, the other day i bought for 65€ a pioneer PL-430 D.D. ,released first in 83 in caqui colour but this was black and the frame is plastic but under it´s a heavy iron base to the turntable itself who´s made of metal too, this to a kid who´s father died when he was a baby and was a friend of mine. He wanted to hear is perfectelly kept ,father´s records so i helped him to buy a cheap but good sounding system , his father system was out of this world good , but his mother needing money sold it very cheap , not to blame she didn´t knew what she had at home and needed money fast , if she had asked me at the time i would had given her whatever she needed, but people think that others aren´t being truthfull when they say "if you need something , call me i´ll help you", this Pioneer is sold cheap if still available for sale and with a cheap audio-technica old cartridge sounds not one not two but 1.000 X better than any Pro-Ject till around 1.000€ with a Ortofon 2M RED

Hello Melinda ! Talking about old vs new turntables , I have very fond memories of my first stereo. It was a gigantic Sharp GS 5600. Made out of wood and with a thick , heavy glass lid and matching speakers. I had it until I moved out at 17 , when I bought a much ”cooler” compact system , and my younger sister took it over. Then my other sister , then our cousin , then another cousin until it finally vanished in a yard sale. I’ve tried to track it down , believe me , but to no avail. If I could , I’d kick my own behind. It had such a great sound , ”But it was monstrously ugly” (read that with a mocking voice in your head). It would’ve looked awesome in our music room now. Take care ! A&R

Melinda, your topic today is so perfect for a choice I just made about my vinyl system. In about 1980 I spent all my student loan money (foolishly) on a turntable. The turntable has been called a poor man's Linn. The table is a Systemdek IIX in case you are interested. I have kept it while moving numerous times even when the years when I was consulting in the USA (I'm Canadian). I posted on one of the forums asking if my turntable is worth upgrading. The response was that the basic table performance is like a Rega P6 or P8, its weakness being its tonearm. To make the story short I've found I can upgrade a piece at a time to remake the turntable into something modern. I've chosen a tonearm ($1500US), a new DC motor/controller ($400), and a cartridge ($500US). In the end I'll spend less money and I'll have something that performs like a Rega P6 or P8 that is unique that I don't think I'll ever sell. PS: I love your channel and I eagerly anticipate your videos.

@@MelindaMurphy The truth is that I have always liked how it sounds. Why I like it so much is that its platter/motor and arm board is suspended from a set of springs so that it is resistant to things like footsteps. Shocks and vibration that are very noticeable on other turntables are only heard when they would make the needle skip on a Rega. Other turntables that have that technology start at $10000US, like the Linn that I mentioned above. That's why I have never bought anything to replace it!

Melinda, glad to hear from you, with another interesting video! It’s an endless debate amongst some of us…what matters more, the cartridge or the turntable? It would have been interesting to see what kind of results you would have gotten, if you had swapped the cartridges. Maybe a quick future video? I have owned at least 50 turntables over the years; modern and vintage. I lean towards vintage, but one thing is very clear to me… at any price point ($200, $1000, $4000, etc), you will get a better built, longer lasting, probably better sounding turntable, when you buy vintage. Of course, sometimes they do need a little bit of servicing to bring them back 😊. Thanks for all the wonderful videos the past few years, and here’s hoping those moving bozos get you your stuff soon! So sorry for your issues with the movers. They deserve the review you will be giving them, especially since they aren't being transparent with your items. Regarding vintage vs. new turntables, many of the older ones were very sturdy and play well, but then you have to deal with finding replacing parts. I agree the newer TTs have better technology, but the costs for an excellent one is usually pretty high, so pros & cons for each. Right now I'm happy with my vintage, still standing, Denon DP-1200, but I may go to a newer TT when I can afford it. Take care.

When I was a kid music systems looked like furniture - they called them consoles with AM-FM and 12" speakers which gave us really good bass - I remember stacking 45s on a spindle and listening to 6 singles in a row so it wasn't all bad and gave me a good ear for today's technology which I fully support - today needle/cartridges are better, the vinyls nice and thick, turntables are better calibrated, speakers have become huge with subwoofers improving the listening experience equal to live performance - I fully support reissues and first pressings depending on the record - hope your furniture is delivered - it's a shame after doing the research that they fail but hope for the best - Great video Melinda❤See you next week!

Another fun video...your husband totally gets you with using 1984 as the test record🙂 As for the movers situation, i would very quietly put feelers out for an attorney...just in case...a back up plan if you will. I do hope this company makes it right by you both without any additional fees or other malarky the company may wanna tack on as a 'conveinience fee'. I bet they will kick themselves in the rear when they discover that you have a very loyal YT community who loves your content. The comparisons though was a great idea...my personal thought is a mix...older units which have been time and use/abuse/move tested and still get the job done are great...and loads cheaper. I had bought a 77 Soundesign i found in AZ for 250 and got about a year and a half before is couldn't maintain speed...i suspect an idler wheel has a flat spot. Currently I have an AT LP120XUSB which has been flawless and am very happy with it. It's kind of the same with record condition...perfect is always preferred but having something is better then nothing...and i am really glad you guys moved your records and related stuff yourself. You at least can put a smile on your face burying yourself in music you love. Crossing my fingers for you guys in getting your furniture to you without any issues.

I've heard vintage record players that have the same very thin and piercingly clear quality of a lot of those cheap new ones (like the ones by Electrohome) and also ones that have a much more rounded tone with very little crackle to be heard and a LOT more bass. My current fulltime turntable is a Fluance RT82 with the Orotofon OM10 cartridge. I love it, but I can't get myself to part with my old Hitatchi HT-1. It has a lot of sentimental value as well as it's the first turntable I ever bought way back in 1984 (when I was 14)! When I was 16, I upgraded the standard P-mount cartridge it came with to a Shure M111HE. About two years ago I took it out of storage, put a new belt on it, and it played beautifully. Even though it's a really basic old turntable, with the better cartridge, it really gave my Fluance good run for it's money! This is comparing a low-end to a mid-end turntable. The edge did go to the Fluance, but as for the Hitachi? It's still a keeper! Great videos Melinda! Take care.

The P8 is terrific but for what little I have invested in the Pioneer, it was good too. I still can't believe we are no longer in Kentucky and in that house. The tiger picture is still in its box because we did bring our own nicer artwork. I'm so glad we did! Lol. Thank you for the kind words. Take care.

The PL-516 was my first turntable in 1980. It came with a basic cartridge that i quickly replaced with a Shure M-95 HE. Which was one of the top bang for the buck cartridges back then. THAT sounded nice. So i learned pretty early on what a difference in soundquality the cartridge makes. And no todays cartridges are not better than those from the past. At least not the ones that are in the for common folks affordable price bracket. And i someome say " the technological advancements...." Well,listen,99% of that goes into cost reduction and cheaper production for a maxed out profit margin.

I still have a couple of older tables in storage, but I've had no desire to go back to those. I'm so sensitive to pitch that my last newer-turntable (an absolutely wretched Pro-Ject that was second from top-of-the-line, with more problems and build quality issues than an Italian sports car) got traded in for the Technics SL-1210G. It's funny you mention this because Mike at The 'In' Groove just did a video on setting up the top Technics table (SL-1000R) and one of the reasons he decided on it was the same as mine--he wanted something that was no fuss to use. I've done a couple of modifications to mine and honestly, it's so far and away better than my older tables that I can't see ever using them again. Speed stability is the best I've heard, sound quality excellent, dead silent backgrounds, and so easy to use. My older tables were a Linn LP-12 knockoff (Walker CJ-55) and a Denon DP-1000; both fit the Grace G707-II tonearm I've had since new in 1983. I also kept my teenaged turntable, the Realistic LAB-400; speed stability was always janky (like the Denon, you could see when the direct drive motor was "pulsing" to maintain speed), but it was a great, reliable beater to play old records on, and I also modded it to play 78s. And I'm handing it down to my youngest once she has room for a system at her house, so she can at least get started on records.

Hi Melinda - tbh I really couldn't care less about these high end products, or these audiophile records and the like. I have an amplifier my late Father In Law gave me many years ago. He made it himself 30+ years ago from military spec components, one audio input, one volume control - nothing else, pure audio and it sounds incredible, it is so heavy it takes two people to lift it lol. I have good speakers around $4K bought many many years ago. My turntable is average, but I dont care - I get an amazing sound - thats all I'm interested in. As Mazzy says "Its The Music Stupid" - thats it !! I listen to many people on utube and again when people start up on their audiophile trials and tribulations and the wow and flutter it just bores me to tears. No offence what so ever Melinda I watch and enjoy all your videos, but if you've watched Mazzy's latest trip to London on one of the last videos' one of the English guys, John I think - in the pub lolol, at the end says frustratingly quote - "Just Play The F...in Record " lol, and thats it for me. I'm a 90/10 CD man, I love both formats. Hope you get your furniture soon, and I'll see you on the next one. Take care Doug (from Down Under)

I have four Technics Turntables. All Direct Drive, one is a Linear Tracking one, An SL-D2 (Semi Auto), SL-D3 (Fully Auto) and my main rig the mighty SL-1600 MKII (Fully Auto). The 1600 has a plinth that totally resistant to vibrations. Probably why so many radio stations used the 1600 MKII. You can literally pound on the table you have it sitting on and nothing gets through to the stylus. Also it has Tonearm Height Adjustment for perfect VTA and pretty much is bullet proof. I use a High Quality Microline stylus/cartridge on it and it sounds very good. I have zero need for any new turntables because these only need a drop of machine oil in the spindle about once every 10 years and they will run forever nice and quiet with no audible rumble or Wow & Flutter. I have 3 Technics SL-1200 Mk 2. Great turntables. The club/DJ “standard”. But then again, greater than 90% of my collection is electronic. I have Ortofon Concorde styluses on each of them. One of the 1200s has a serial number from 1979, the others are newer from the late 1990s. I can’t tell the difference between them. I’ve long passed on the “audiophile” debate honestly. Maybe what I write following will set some people off or sound ignorant, but it’s my opinion. For vinyl, I feel that the biggest factor is the stylus and proper setup. Clean power is critical, so spending the money on a good, professional level surge protector is worth it IMHO. Also the gauge of speaker cable that’s appropriate for the speakers and amp you have is important. Lastly, the speakers that sound good to you as the listener is probably the biggest factor. And that’s going to differ drastically based on the type of music you listen to and how you like the sound to be.

I am so sorry about the move issues. I know two people who have moved across the country this year and have faced similar issues. One of them opted to rent a Uhaul and drive all their stuff across several states themselves because they didn't appreciate such a large window for the delivery date (the company could only guarantee a 14-day window for drop off, rather than a set date). The other person just had to wait those two weeks. But three! That's unbelievable.

I agree. It's unacceptable. They never gave us any indication it would take this long. They told us 3 to 7 business days. It is well beyond that. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️

As someone who buys practically all my vinyl records at yard and estate sales, I enjoyed Melinda’s take on this subject. I’m of the opinion that if you have the money and you consider yourself a true audiophile, then by all means, shell out the big bucks for the high end stereo equipment. Me however, I grew up in the era where LP records cost around 5-7 dollars new and the stereo systems we had in the 1970s and 80s played them just fine. In fact I have two stereo systems in my home all vintage equipment purchased for cheap! My bedroom system is the one I play most of my albums. It consists of a Pioneer PL-730 automatic turntable with its original cartridge ($5.00) A JVC RX-6008V Audio Video receiver ($5.00) a pair of Sony U-400 three way speakers ($10.00) and a ESS High Tech Loudspeaker System, Model 10 three way speakers ($5.00). All purchased separately at yard sales and thrift stores. Not bad for $25.00 wouldn’t you say? I agree with Melinda that you don’t have to spend a lot of money to enjoy this hobby. You just have to get up early on Saturdays and hit your local yard sales. I for one can’t justify paying big money for a “Sophisticated” sound system or new release albums. I appreciate channels like Melinda’s that keep me updated on new records that I might enjoy having in my own collection. To avoid paying what I consider high prices I simply trade in a few yard sale records that I buy for a fraction of the cost of a new album. I’m lucky I live in an area where I come across albums anywhere from a quarter to five dollars on a regular basis. And like Melinda, I enjoy sharing stories about music artists and albums I love. Hopefully when she gets her new house back in order she will return to telling us more stories about the music she loves! Finally on a silly note, I’m curious which room she will hang her Tiger painting in. Glad you’re back Melinda!

So crappy that is happening. What a lot of the companies do is try to move your stuff along with someone else's at the same time on the same truck so they can make 2 or 3 drop offs on one round trip. So they will sit there and wait, wait, and wait hoping another customer comes a long do they can make more money on the same trip.
@MelindaMurphy
@MelindaMurphy Месяц назад
That's exactly what I think is happening to us. That would be fine if this didn't cause our stuff to be so significantly delayed. I'm all for saving money but not at the expense of others. You nailed it. If they had been honest with us about a delivery date, we could have been more prepared. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️

I'm glad you transported your collection yourself! I don't understand why moving companies keep peoples stuff, you think it would be a pain to have taking up space in their trucks. I mean where is your stuff for Pete's sake?! Hope you get your furniture back soon!

They are telling us that our things are in a climate controlled warehouse in Indianapolis. I'm not sure why it's in a warehouse that is in the opposite direction of where we moved to. To be honest, I don't really believe them anymore anyway. My guess is that they are waiting for someone else to move in the same direction as us so that they can put our things on the same truck and save them some money. 😡 It's all ridiculous. Thank you and take care.

Variety is cool, Melinda. I recall the manager at Radio Shack (circa 1975) telling teenage me that he had a P-mount arm in his phono & enjoyed swapping cartridges according to his mood. I listen often via headphones at home & bought a Woo "Fireflies" headphone amp (made in Brooklyn!) a few years ago. On rare occasions I go back to listening via my old FatMan iTube headphone amp because I love the 2nd harmonic distortion it adds. Everything sounds "rich" via the FatMan, but I miss the detail & punch of the Woo so I always return to it.

Happy to report that you do not need an ultra expensive turntable. I did a listening test and compared one with a price tag beyond 200.000$ with a very good turntable from the late 1960s. No difference whatsoever, sorry to the audiophiles who think differently.

Glad you are getting your audio system and media back together. You will most likely find the Rega vs Pioneer to be MUCH closer IF both units are running the same cartridge. Yes, many vintage tables can be tweeked to sound very good. With regard to new vs old in audio, in the CD or streaming areas there is no contest; the new stuff rocks big time; though, I MUCH prefer Vinyl !!!! However, many vintage tables are very good and again, with the right cart and a few tweaks they can sound amazing and then some. There are few turntables available over $200,000 and one at $650,000 which are more of an artsie statement. Your Rega with the right cart and setup can rival anything out there. This is also true of many other decent tables. If one has millions to spend, so be it but the enjoyment of music can be had for FAR LESS $'s. I have done double blind test with my $5k Well Tempered Reference and my $350, (1975 $'s) Kenwood KD 550, both having the same cart and both running the same electronics. I set the test up so no one could see which table I was running while playing the same album. The reviews were, as expected, all over the place. With the same group of people, they were all easily fooled over and over again. To be fair, I had done some tweeks to the Kenwood which did help it some. Still, the right cart on a decent table now or 50 years ago can sound amazing. AND you don't have to spend a fortune on a decent cart. I find the Micro Benze carts to sound amazingly close to less expensive Grado carts. So don't be fooled in spending north of $10,000 for cartridges, claimed to be the same ones God Almighty uses. LOL. Not sure which camp you are in, the Musicphile or Audiophile; I suspect strongly you are a hardcore Musicphile and a budding audiophile and both are fine. IMHO, we should all be more committed to being a Musicphile FIRST and for those of us like myself who are engineers or also technicians or wannabees, tweaking for every last bit of perfection is an obsession, then be both is also fine. I hope you will soon have all of your furniture and other things in your new home. I agree with you on so many things. 😀 The stylus does make a huge difference. In this comparison, I was intrigued by the difference in the prices of the turntables and the cartridges. I wanted to see if expensive equaled better sound and in this case it does. But I was also shocked at how solid the Pioneer was for such a low price. This is very encouraging for those that want to get on this hobby but don't want to get into a big expense. I'm definitely more into the music over the sound quality but you diagnosed me correctly. I'm a little bit of both. Lol. ❤️🤗 Thank you for the kind words. Take care.

I have 2 vintage tables. A Elac Miricord and a Thorens. I have no desire to upgrade them but I have bought multiple tone arms or cartridge heads for diffuser cartridges. I find they make a bigger difference than the table does.

I agree that the tone arms and carts make a huge difference. The video was a comparison between a standard and affordable turntable, tone arm, and cart vs something that I personally consider a huge splurge for myself. I wanted to give an honest answer of whether the more expensive gear was better. In my opinion, it is quite a bit better but that the Pioneer was very enjoyable too. I apologize for the late response. Take care. 🤗❤️

My dream turntable is a VPI Classic or Scout in the same range as your P8. I currently have a $1K Thorens from the early 80s and I'm really happy with it though it has a bit of a mysterious grounding issue that comes and goes. Will I ever upgrade to the VPI? If I ever get down to business and sell my unwanted records on discogs... yes... Thanks for your great videos!

Hi melinda. still dealing with my mother's loss. have to be strong but i still miss her. i think that those people; that have your furniture and your priced records should be let known, that its inexcusable; that your items havent been delivered to your new home. perhaps legal action has to be taken . thats my opinion. on the subject of old vs New turntables; its like this. like having an old car that ; if youre happy with it and your thinking of buying a new one then you should keep your old one. great video melinda

You said you are having trouble with subwoofer placement. The recommended procedure is to place the subwoofer in the listening position. You then move around to different locations in the room until you get the most satisfying bass. When you find it put the subwoofer in that location.

My turntable is an older Optonica with granite (mikage ishi) and rosewood plinth. It weighs 35 lb, and I have a Shure VST- III cartridge with a new Vividline hyperelliptical stylus from LP Gear. It comes with the Sharp copy of the Shure Bros tone arm. One account advised that the Optonica RP 3500 was designed to compete with the Kenwood KD-500, 600 and 650, but was superior to those in the opinion of the writer.

Wow! I was hoping to see vintage versus modern in your words, turntables. Please tell me there is a part two to this… I have been a HiFi buff since the 1970s, when it was DIN4500 was the standard recognition for those who know. Scandinavian and British High Fidelity all the way! Old school beats new school for my money.

Use both a modern Technics 1200 GAE and a reconditioned Denon DP 47 vintage TT from the 80's. The Denon is what I like to call lost tech. Fully Automatic it is a God send when you are tired and want your vinyl fix but are worried about dozing off or working and do not have the ability to baby sit the Stylus. Despite not being considered an Audiophile table it sounds pretty darn good to boot.

Yes, the Pioneer would definitely be better with a cartridge upgrade. I was curious to know if I could hear major differences between turntable/cartridge that was pricey and something more basic and affordable. The P8 did win the sound quality shoot out but for the price, that Pioneer turntable did a great job. Thank you for the kind words. I am so happy to have my record collection. Moving it ourselves was well worth it. Thank you and take care. 🤗❤️
