Thanks Blackie. I like you prefer the newer one. I use that or a P38 almost daily. I turn down the hand winder can openers anymore, I'm faster with the hand style ones as it is. Kind of sad these kids now can't figure out how to use a can opener. If I hadn't seen a video of a group of high school aged kids celebrating when they figured it out, I wouldn't have believed it.

That plunge style can opener would make a pretty good scrapper blade.

My mind is blown, I always believed that the original style can opener was a leather punch and one time was told it was for making button holes and the stud was to prevent over penetration, now I know the truth! wish you would have posted this 50 years ago, but then posting was done with a handbill and a hammer in the town circle. Thank you Blackie I can't be the only one who was surprised by this?

Very cool Black. Wondered how it worked. I have used a similar style if a Shrade Walden from the mid 40's. It has two prongs, one with the "knife" and the other with a footed blade that serves at a stud. I recall using the style I picked up in the 50's and early 60's Yep,you did get cut! Like these vintage videos. Of course, vintage for you and I is much different than the so-called vintage today which often includes knives from the mid 70's to mid 90's.

I think vintage means past decades old stuff, and antique older than that. So its not wrong to call 70's or 90's stuff as "vintage" i think.

hope you didn't eat that dog food. lol... Mrs Kelly cooked breakfast for Mr. Kelly, canned corned beef hash and eggs... then gave Cinder (the dog) her breakfast. being a thrifty house wife she put both the corned beef hash and the unused dog food in the ice box. later that day Mr. Kelly came home from work at the defense plant. as Mrs Kelly was pulling a double shift at the defense plant, he decided to fix himself a super, supper of hash and eggs. Next morning Mrs Kelly went to the ice box to feed Cinder (the dog). Audly (thats Mr. Kellys name) Audly? she said ... wheres the dog food? That I left in the ice box the beef hash is in here but not the dog food... True story.. It happened to my Mother and father in law in 1943... and as Audly told me the story he said that it was as he remembered it, very good... good video blacky

Thanks for sharing that. I have never used nor seen the old style can opener. Would have had no idea how to use it. Now I know. Thanks. I personally have a SAK with a modern one but prefer the military P38 which I carry on my key ring. Used it a lot and it's quick. God Bless

I've seen these on vintage knives. The can opener that says can opener you see more common on a bit more modern blades and I kinda refer to them as 'American style can opener' but you also see them on European made military camp knives. The modern ones and even a lot of multitools have switched to the more modern style can opener like you see on modern SAK's and they work great. Better than the other ones, but gotta love the history of the can opener on camp knives.

You can still open a can using a knife blade pretty easily so long as you don't mind dulling your knife.

The safety can opener, the one marked can opener was patented in 1946 by Imperial. The triangular one came out in the 1800s. Several styles were available until the WWII. The Safety Can Opener was first used on USMC utility Knives made by Kingston in 1944. Kingston was a collaborative company owned by Imperial and Ulster. Most can openers during WWII were a claw type opener that also opened by ripping upward. Just thought you'd like to know.

Saw a young Ben Johnson use the old style can opener in a John Wayne movie where a John plays a army officer and his son is assigned to the unit. I think it’s Rio Grande.

I have the rough rider knife and the can opener works really well if you use it often but in my opinion it would be a much better knife with the later opener, I know it is representing an earlier model but if rough rider produced knives with a choice that would be great

I can see why they changed the design to the new one. The old design looks dangerous slipping out toward you on each cut and sharp edges on the can. Good job showing the differences.
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS 6 лет назад
thats a fact..the old style left a sharp ragged edge..the improved style make the edge turn down and was safer

I went through scouts using the Sak can opener. I can't get used to the other styles. But to each their own. As long as the can gets opened its all good.

Interesting. I have wondered how these worked. It almost seems to me like it could be drawn backwards/edge down. Have you ever tried that? Just curious...

Hey Blackie, it seems like once the can was punctured, the cutter could be pulled backwards, and then the cutting edge levered down, and used like the lobster claw Boy Scout opener, moving backwards, though it would have a smaller "bite". That would make the cut, and the operation a lot safer. Do you think maybe it could work like that?
@168Diplomat
@168Diplomat 7 месяцев назад
That tends to close the blade been there tried that trying to figure out how to use it until my 90 y/o grandmother taught me

Hey man, I'm sure you have it somewhere but i can't find it, can you talk about the uberti 1858 new army with the conversion cylinder and how powerful of a 45lc you should shoot out of it and such? I see mixed answers, "it should only be cowboy loads" "you can shoot regular loads" etc. Thank you!
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS 6 лет назад
i have not had a cyl conversion for the rem yet..but as i understand it they say stay with cowboy loads( 800 or less fps) this is more of a legal thing..since if they openly say you can shoot any off the shelf 45 colt..somebody will find a hand load of .454 casull and blow themselves up..so my advice would be to follow what the makes said to do..but if you choose to shoot off the shelf 45..be sure its not some +p+++ load..be safe...safe journeys
@renoblevg5375
@renoblevg5375 6 лет назад
blackoracle69 another question, with modern steel is the 1851 still a weaker design (such as the pin holding it together and bending from pressures) than the 1858 new army?
@BLACKIETHOMAS
@BLACKIETHOMAS 6 лет назад
YES.. the steel will have greater movement under pressure since its only held in one spot..on a 58 the solid frame holds it much tighter( this means during recoil )
