This video is about my latest record collection addition and an absolute top ten personal grail release: the legendary 6e/4e matrix UK release of Bowie's landmark THE RISE AND FALL OF ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS. Long hailed by Bowie fans and audiophiles, this slightly later UK cutting has a hotter sound with truly great punch that is reportedly more impressive than the original 1e UK first pressing...and I believe it! I've wanted one of these ever since I got into record collecting after hearing samples and having my mind blown. The 6e/4e is notable for having the alternate mix of Starman with the loud morse code sounding sections at the start of the chorus-this is my preferred version and is the way I enjoy the song most.
I'm still stunned at this find in the condition for this price. In my humble opinion this is THE ONE and definitive. Someday I hope to obtain and do a shootout between the original 1E UK cutting and the out of print 2012 analog cut LP form the anniversary boxset.

I’ve heard samples of some of those and they sound great. I just prefer this one especially for the alternate Starman.

It's wonderful little gems like this that make collecting such fun. I got into David Bowie about 10 years ago when I got the Station to Station deluxe box set, which I only bought because the cover had a still from The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Bowie practically requires chasing different editions all the time! 🤣 I wish I had gotten the Station box for all the extras back then. The original uk pressing is sublime but I’d like to get a clean US original Station to compare it to someday.

Congratulations Damn Fool Idealistic Crusader. That is a great acquisition! I too am a fan of David Bowie and lately I have been re-listening to his music. He was truly one of the greatest and I have got alot of respect for him.

Thanks!! If you’re looking at Bowie vinyl the rule of thumb is UK originals for everything up to Scary Monsters. US vinyl from there but original usa vinyl for the earlier albums can be great on it’s own and rival uk vinyl for some albums. Ziggy is the one where there are different UK cuttings.

I just received an minty 6E/4E press that took years to find in that condition and I whole heartedly agree its a magic ... better than my MFSL

It’s something else indeed! I love the different Starman mix and the whole album just feels so much more alive than I’ve ever experienced it.

Hello Tim, how can I get to this album ? on Discog there is no information about this 6E/4E release. Let me know

Hi! Awesome video, would you say that the pressing has to be 6E/4E, or can there be numbers AFTER the 6E/4E and it still be the same pressing?
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader Год назад
I think there's a 7E/4E slightly later pressing but I have no idea how long this mastering lasted or if it made it over to any other pressings or reissues. Nothing else I've tried comes close though there's always sleeper Bowie pressings that can sound great for certain albums like UK represses or the early 80's European RCA vinyl reissues.

Awesome find! Such a great album; congrats on finally being able to cross it off your grail list. By the way, I’ve been curious what your preferred method of cleaning vinyl is?

Unfortunately nothing too fancy as of yet. I want a proper rcm but can’t yet afford a vpi. Usually I do basic washing and drying by hand and have had a spin clean before.

You can’t have too many Ziggys and to be honest the original US, original UK and the 6e/4e have their own individual flavors. I’ve also heard good things about the later green label UK/European version from 1981 or so.

Great vid, thanks for the info :) my girlfriend came across a copy of this in a charity shop recently, it's in incredible condition. We're thinking whoever it originally belonged to certainly looked after it knowing how special it was. What do reckon roughly it's worth right now? Thanks again :)

That’s amazing to find in that shape and in that type of store!!! Usually the copies I see (which are rare because most sellers don’t identify matrix info until you ask them) depending on condition will range between $50-100 and up. It’s gotten much harder to afford UK Bowie pressings since the vinyl revival. I really don’t think any version will best it sonically.

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader thanks for the info, yeah it was a nice find. We tend to dig through charity shops regularly simply to feed our love of music & build a nice varied selection, always nice to come across something rare as they don't last long in those stores!

It was very helpful. I have bought 2 6E/4E from UK. Thanks I love the sound. By the way, Many people believe 2012 version is AAA analgue cut. But, I can see remastered vinyl on the hype sticker. What makes you think it is alalogue? Later Vinyl versions say "2012 Digital remaster"
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader
@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader 2 года назад
It was done as far as I know as a special analog cut for the 40th anniversary box set that also included a hires presentation on a Blu-ray iirc. This was before the digital catalog remaster project. Nowadays some random vinyl reissues contain the 2012 version.
@Persistentsungsil

@@DamnFoolIdealisticCrusader I think many people believe that 40th version have All analogue process. But, I can not find the evidence yet. I just bough a copy of 2020 version last week , It has different matrix number from 2012 version. But half of the numbers are same. I still suspect that 2012 and 2020 would share same digital source.(2012 Digital Master from original tape) I ordered 40th anniversary to collect DVD audio, I will compare it with 2020 version.
