Like any passion: cars, bikes, PC, clothes, animals, comics. Sometimes you may pay a too high price for a useless piece of junk. this one is not a funtamental element. it has a very low priority in comparison to other attentions in listening to vinyls but It is not completely useless as long as you first take care of, 1) reducing electrical interference on the system, 2) positioning the sound system correctly in your suitable room, 3) buy good quality turntable, amplifier and speakers (not necessarily very expensive), 4) the vinyl is in good condition 5) the whole system rests on a stable structure that creates less possible resonance. Then you might worry about adding one of these stuffs. It's a matter of tuning: each element, if taken individually, may not be noticed, but taken together they make a big difference.
@ENGLISHISBEST

Try a sound test and see for yourself, I was using these many years ago in the 80s it helps place the vinyl firmly to the turntable thus reducing vibration. It sounds better listen & if you don't notice it then your not into hifi audio getting the best clout for a daily low investment. It's not just a gimmick if it works which it does. Whatever your hobby if your serious about it you will buy anything to tweak it.

@@ENGLISHISBEST Actually I went to CD and SACD for the improved sound quality. I like the romantic ritual of vinyl and listen when I want the focus because of the ritual. But for clarity, frequency range and truer fidelity, the CD and SACD are superior.

@@CyPk2077 If one studies actual science and engineering about sound recording and playback, it becomes harder to be convinced of $50 for a turntable weight or thousands for audio cabling, etc. Psychosomatics, power of suggestion, "the more you pay, the more it's worth", are strong in any hobby where the rewards are purely subjective.

I love these videos keep them coming! On a mid range or higher turntable, the weight will increase platter mass, and inertia will help even out the speed consistency and mechanically connect the record to the platter which is a consistent with most high-end turntable designs. (there needs to be a good bearing and motor to support the weight, so it might make a cheap turntable sound worse) The record is flatter and more ridged, and generally sounds better for the same reason most people prefer 180 gram vinyl over thin records. I find clamps a bit fiddly to use on a daily basis and don't help with the mass benefit.

Neither do I. As far as looking cool, that's the problem for me. Many record labels themselves nlook cool. Theu may be part of the album cover, like going for the one by Yes, or many Alan Parsons albums. In those cases the weight or clamps hide the label. And I do have a cheaper turntable so that's good news for me - don't need one.

Nice video, new sub. I just got a record weight and I'm indifferent about it. I feel every little tweak you make just becomes the new normal and its hard to hear a difference after each one. That being said, if I was to remove all the "tweaking" at one time, I think there is a dramatic difference. What the weight did for me was to satisfy my urge to buy something to improve the system for the time being. Everything except for some DIY speakers have been bought in the last 8 months. Almost 40 years ago I bought a Thorens 316 belt drive turntable and witha i bought a Nagoka record clamp. This is a delrin clamp with 3 spring steel fingers with silicone pads that clamps on the the spindle with a collet action. It only weighs a few ounces and does a good job clamping the record to the platter. It's been used for close to 40 years and looks new, I think I paid #10 for it. I picked up a brass record weight a few years ago when the turntable I was using had a threaded spindle. I got this for $12 on Ebay, it works but I think the clamp worked better. I don't think spending any real money on a weight makes sense, as lond as the weight is balanced it will do it's job. It would be a better use of the money to replace a plastic subplatter with a milled aluminum subplatter.

Hi-thanks for this video! I have a weight and I have a clamp. I use the weight on my linear tracker and the clamp on my 1200mk5G. I notice that they make poorly manufactured records sit flat and I get less noise and distortion-particularly on ellipticals. I can’t say that it makes much sound difference on the cheaper conical stylus. I used to mix and backspin in the early 90’s so you had to have a set of conical styli on hand as ellipticals hated me pulling the record.

I personally don’t have a weight although I am thinking on getting one. Something that cross my mind is how the weight affects the speed of the platter. Usually you don’t see in the turntable’s specs how much weight it can hold without rotation speed being affected. Thoughts? Good to see you’re back
@DevotedtoVinyl
@DevotedtoVinyl 4 года назад
That's actually a really good question. I don't quite know the answer. But some turntable companies make weights that work perfectly for their own tables/platters. So if you have a Project table, you could get a Project weight. If you had a Clearaudio table, you could buy a Clearaudio weight, etc. That might be something to consider if you're worried about it being too heavy.

Once the platter is up to speed, a reasonable ammount of increased weight shouldnt make any difference to speed, but you may notice that it takes the motor longer to get up to speed in the first place.

It's true, as someone commented, you don't often see black audiophiles. It's nice to have company🙂. Anyway, a record clamp is the way to go. You can press it firmly on your platter, and then tighten it allowing the clamp to put maximum pressure on your record. This reduces warping and improves tracking significantly. Do you need to spend hundreds of dollars? That's up to you. I've opted for a Michelle clamp. It was around $30. Recently, I've ordered a KAB clamp for $37. It has a bubble level in the center of it. What a great value.

I am afraid to use a weight. I have vintage turntables and I'm concerned about stress on the motor. Now a clamp that would flatten you record might help the stylus track more evenly.
@theherrdark4834
@theherrdark4834 3 года назад
Actually, it will make the motor work less because the extra weight will help the platter spin on its own and the motor just keeps it at speed, once it gets spinning the motor just adds a little force to keep its speed. The same thing is happening with a flywheel on electric motors and engines. It helps create rotational torque to fight against resistance, which alleviates the stress on the power source.
@undress62
@undress62 3 года назад
There are record clamps for that that doesn’t weigh too much. Maybe a better choice for low powered motors.
@robc4191
@robc4191 3 года назад
@@undress62 actually the clamps that go around the outside if the record would put more of an inertial load on the motor because their mass is so much further from the axis. That said, if you're only using these things occasionally for warped records, the only noticable difference is it will take a little longer for the platter to spin up to speed.

You dont need to go over say $40 on a weight if you do your paying for hype, long as it weighs a half pound or so it will make a difference. I have a one pounder that came with my early 80's Harman Kardon T40 turntable and it seems to work well even though I always thought one pound was a bit on the heavy side - But HK supplied them with their high end tables at the time and as an added accessory on their entry level tables as well so I figured it must be safe. I remember calling HK and they told me the tables were built for the heavy weight and had large capacity platter bearings.

But what will it do to your turntable ? Bearings get destroyed?

Wondering about the effect on belt driven turntables - like a Dual 701. Would not that extreme weight put stress on the belt and destroy it sooner than natural wear?
@ericodijk
@ericodijk 2 года назад
Wanted to say the same. The force needed to start the platter turning is a lot higher. It might indeed put extra stress on the first second or two. You have a point there! That said, I have Direct Drive, that may be a difference.

What impact on ,say a belt drive/ might the weight cause drag? Update; just watched a vid on record weights, and it seems that, regardless of direct drive or belt drive, it did not slow down, or affect the playing speed. Just don't use on suitcase players or small size players.

would that extra mass wear out bearings /motors quicker?
@tttdrr2293
@tttdrr2293 4 года назад
I was thinking a magnetic clamp system. You put it under the record then another on top. This would be stress free with regards to the motor/belt system. Not sure if it would interfere with the cartridge. Any thoughts?
@robc4191
@robc4191 3 года назад
Why would it be 'stress free?' doesn't the motor still have to accelerate the greater weight of the clamp?

I wonder if the weight on top of LP affect the motor of LP player. Do I need better LP with more powerful motor? Because I plan to buy a LP player, headphone, and headphone amplifier.

The amount of improvement you get from a weight or clamp depends on the quality of your system I suppose. I use a clamp. while the improvement is subtle I find the music sounds more focused. better sound stage and even the sound stage having more depth, more 3D so to say. Much quieter noise floor.

These weights will enhance the sound of the combination of vinyl and platter mat, be that felt, cork, leather or whatever. Mind you, these are only for real turntables (Rega Planar 2 and up), as they WILL be hard on your bearings!

Well Greetings From the Great Southwest where men are men and sheep don’t go out at night (lol) regarding the weighting on the weight Idea YES I have found overall improvement in audio quality. What I would like to see is a spectrum analysis with a weight va without has anybody approached you perhaps that would tell the tell Respectfully Submitted Michael Snare

In case of entry level tables, I think a weight would shorten the bearing life, you are better off (carefully, using a light weight clamp).Even so it will not make much of a difference. This is my personal experience. On a good table a weight makes a significant difference.

One pound?! That’s pretty heavy! I use a weight on my turntable - I’m not sure it makes a noticeable difference but I like using it as part of the ritual of playing my records.

Clamps > Weights at least to me. My cheapo Record Doctor clamp works great. I mostly use it for minor dish warps. I really don’t hear any sonic differences though. I already have an acrylic platter so that might have something to do with it

Hi, I just discovered your channel. I wonder if it's not risky to put a 400g weight on a suspended turntable like the project. Won't it damage the motor?
@DevotedtoVinyl
@DevotedtoVinyl 3 года назад
Well, if you're worried, you can always buy a weight or clamp that's made by a turntable manufacturer and created for use with their line of turntables.

If youre really low on bucks and want something better than nothing, find a round electrical grommet at the hardware store etc that fits just snug on the spindle, the inside hole should be just a hair smaller than the spindle for a snug fit. You push that down on the spindle and it will pull the center of the record down tight and only cost a few pennies - is it as good as a weight-? Probably not, but its a damn sight better than nothing at all since it holds the record down and provides some degree of damping effect. In fact they used to sell a similar thing just for records, it came with Revolver brand turntables and was called "the pig" believe it or not and it did the exact same thing but cost about three bucks, they dont make them anymore but I still have mine.

1 No good on suspended tables extra weight detunes the suspension! 2 Can make top end dull and less musical 3 Increases coupling between platter and record so potentially more low freq noise can be transmitted 4 you'll forget to put the clamp back on often after flipping sides and don't notice any difference in sound.!

No doubt a weight would really help a warped vinyl record IF, they disigned a proper platter MAT to match the weight. Most platter mats, are ''flat'' and a record, is thicker in the center (plus, the label's thicknesses). If there was a recess, in the mat, at it's center, the record, under the weight, would contact the outer edge of platter/mat and would be really flat, THAT, would really help!

Clamps are better because the weights pit a strain on motor , clamps secure record and flattens it as well. I have a weight which I don't use because weight didn't work for me I ended up getting disc flattened by someone on

I have kind of a newbie question. Does the weight slow down the rotational speed? Did you notice if songs sounded a little slower. Just curious.
@DevotedtoVinyl
@DevotedtoVinyl 3 года назад
No, not at all. And some manufacturers actually make weights and clamps for their line of turntables.
@domagojmaricic9664

I don't use clamp because I think it's unnecessery. It can't flatten the warped record and if clamp is heavy it disturbs platter rotation.
@patrickfrawley768
@patrickfrawley768 4 года назад
Surely a record clamp can only really work properly if the actual platter has a slight concave dip going from the outside of the platter towards the center of the platter. it would mean the arm / cartridge was running slightly down hill so to speak. This would need more anti scatting I would think. My reasoning is that if the record has a warp, it would be flattened better with a concave platter as the outside of the record would be pressed against the outside of the platter while the inside of the record to be pressed lower thus taking out more of the warp. This would not happen on a flat platter.
