stregadisalem Penélope Cruz's performance was better. Although Viola Davis was really good in "Doubt", I think the reason why her performance was weaker is because she barely had time on-screen. That's why I prefer Penélope's.

Viola Davis gave a stupendous job in "Doubt" and held her own with Meryl STreep in that great scene. But Streep had the leading role and exploded later on in the film, creating something riveting and hair raising. In "Irton Lady", Streep again blew the ceiling down over her competition, though Davis was wonderful in "The Help". Viola Davis will eventually win an Oscar, no doubt. She's one of the greatest actresses out there. An outstanding actress who can move mountains. Bravo to her and may Streep reign for years to come. Both are fabulous.

@Rosabbasfriend: Both Streep and Davis deserved Oscars for "Doubt". I loved Davis in "The Help", but Streep blew my mind in "The Iron Lady". The REAL fact is that Streep had gone for eighteen years with a slew of nominations since her second Oscar, and that "Doubt" was the film for which she should have won the best-actress Oscar, along with Viola Davis for supporting-actress. It didn't happen. Kate Winslett in "The Reader" should not have won over Streep. However, "The Iron Lady" brought Streep awards from all over the world, and her performance WAS incredible. Besides, I didn't want Viola Davis to win for playing a maid. I'm SO glad that she's a shoo-in for "Fences", for which she truly deserves an Oscar. Also, she and Street are very, very close friends and they admire each other tremendously. I wouldn't be surprised if they reunite for another project.

I was once upon a time ago too young to catch a lot of Meryl Streep's earliest performances, but I started going back to watch her early dramatic roles and the woman freaked me out: she is a chameleon. It really made me understand why her peers half-joking, half-seriously speak of her in hushed tones and refer to her as "The Great One" Viola I also absolutely adore and am so happy for the level of success she's ascended to, for me she is a true Hollywood star in every way, from her film, tv and stage choices, to her wonderful personality, her eloquence on her craft, and her sense of style! She's a Hollywood Classic in every way.

@stylecollective: You are so right! If one sees Meryl Streep's ENTIRE body of work, they can't help but be astonished. I know of no actress, living or historical, who has massed such a gallery of diversified characters. She is the most honored and revered American actress ever. She and Viola Davis are very close friends and it was Viola that Meryl wanted to do her tribute at the Golden Globes. Davis is entering her golden period, and you can be sure that Oscar will be hers THIS year for "Fences".

Larry Mitchell I agree. Just on technical complexity, Streep deserved the Oscar. Viola Davis - although very much her own person - is the heir to Meryl in terms of astonishing talent and breadth. I adore Viola. I want to see her shine until the very end.

Viola will be nominated MANY more times. I WANT to want her to have won for Doubt, but it was 7 (albeit POWERFUL) minutes, and Penelope made me die laughing in Vicky Cristina Barcelona And Meryl in The Iron Lady was insanely good So I'm not pissed, but I KNOW she will be nominated many more times and win several times

I agree. She's only just begun to take the world by storm, I see her career being FIRE for some time to come. I hope she'll be more active on the international film festival circuit so that global audiences will have the chance to get to know her work.

It begins with the projects being released. We have to have quality work being released, but then we also have to make sure we have the support in our community for films that aren't just romantic comedies, and show up in the theatres so that they have box office power.

Penelope was great in VCB, but Viola was my winner for Doubt in that year. She was MINDBLOWING. In The Help she was also great , but Octavia Spencer and Jessica Chastain stole the show a bit. She finally got the Oscar for Fences, no debate, one of the most deserved supporting actress win... (and Denzel Washington in that movie. jesus christ.)

Meryl was incredible of course but imo what also tipped the votes in her favor was the fact that she also played Thatcher as an old lady, long after she'd left office; so its like she played two different characters.
