As far as the Die Hard references, this movie was MADE because of the long standing debate of whether or not Die Hard counted as a Christmas movie and was actually pitched as 'Die Hard with Santa Claus'.

The reason for the tattooed and combative Santa is it references the original Germanic/Nordic origins of the Santa legend that thread of the Santa legend (there are multiple) has Santa as a literal aspect of the god Wodan/Odin - he leads the Wild Hunt, can and does bring gifts but also has a warrior aspect.

7:50 "Awww, of course she wants her family together." Of course. It's a Hollywood trope as old as Hollywood. They use kids to melt our hearts. I don't fall for it. When my parents got a divorce, I was never happier and never wanted them back together. But aside from that, I refuse to be taken in by "Oh, that child actor is adorable." They have to earn that. This girl, Trudy, Leah Brady, she earned it. She is adorable. Her character is fun, funny, and adds depth to this movie. She's not just a Hollywood gimmick. Hear that Hollywood? This is how to write child characters!

It is a crime that Santa’s best one-liner from the trailers didn’t make into the movie: “Time for some season’s beatings.” And you just know that this movie evolved from someone’s argument about whether Die Hard is a Christmas movie. “OK, maybe it’s not. But what if it was?”

Last year I took my (then) 15 and 10 year old to see this. My eldest and I were geeking out about how they were incorporating and hinting at the Norse lore with regards to Santa Claus, my 10 year old and I were geeking out about the takedowns. There were only a couple of moments that I wish I'd thought of as possibilities and not taken the younger of the 2, but thankfully my kids are tough. This quickly became a holiday favorite. OH. So. Santa Claus is based on Odin. Odin would ride his 8 legged horse, Sleipnir, across the sky during Yule, and lead the great hunt where he'd abduct and kill those who had been bad.

This has taken a top spot amongst my favorite holiday films, taking a place amongst such holiday classics as Albert Finney's musical "Scrooge", Billy Murray's "Scrooged" and "White Christmas". My favorite part of the movie is actually the premise that Santa has his origins as a Norse viking and that we never actually get an explanation of exactly how he became the magical embodiment of the holiday season. Ultimately, we just have "Norse raider with mysterious mystical powers" and...honestly, that's all I needed. For my money, the best way to make a sequel of this movie would be to have the story cross over with Patton Oswald and Christopher Meloni's "Happy!". Make of that what you will.

YES!!!! Finally you saw this movie. I got a kick out of this film. I laughed from the beginning to the end. I loved how they fused Die Hard 2 and Home Alone into this movie. It's part Die Hard 2 because of the shoot-out happening in and out of the house, the special forces's betrayal, the heist, and snow mobile chase and more shoot-out. For Home Alone, it's obvious, which scene I'm referring to in Violent Night

I think my favorite thing is the fact that they wove together two different Santa origins - the one about Wotan that's been mentioned repeatedly, but also the fact that Nicomund had his change of heart down in Constantinople. See, St. Nicholas was a Cappadocian saint, and Cappadocia was right next door to Constantinople. So basically implying that a Christian Saint was secretly a Norse demi-god, which is the reverse of what the Christians did... :-D

I saw this with my younger brother and sister, took em on a sibling day, and WOW lmao this movie blew us away! 😂 We were laughing, crying, geeking over the Actual History of Saint Nick and all his counterparts and names, especially the Viking origin, one or my favorites lol... On a personal note, we still do believe in The Christmas Magic, even keeping it alive with my baby cousins. Idk it's something that is very equal with Religion and having Faith in something that is intangible.. seeing isnt always believing, but i will always have faith that at the VERY LEAST.... -When I saw the trailer for this, I put it in my “hone release” category in terms of when I’d catch it. After attending my 1st concert in “Fuck, I’m old” years which led to the happiest I had felt in a long time, I decided to check it out just because I found a copy at Redbox. When that opening animation before it started played, I realized it was from the same company behind the “John Wick” franchise, “Nobody”, and “Bullet Train.” My interest grew exponentially and regretted not seeing it in the theater before the first few seconds of it. That led to high expectations. Surprisingly(or maybe not), it exceeded them. -It managed to be funny, heartwarming, and action packed in a great combination, which can be hard to do. The cheesy lines were done perfectly. It could be guilty of using Christmas movie tropes with “Home Alone”, “Die Hard”, and somewhat “Miracle on 34th Street” with Santa playing a role. (I’d add in the movie from “Scrooged” with Lee Majors.) However, it creates a great homage while, as you kinda eluded to, also poking fun at them. -If I had to pick my favorite moment, it would be the hand grenade scene. Santa running away and then stopping to watch is something that, if I was in that moment, I’d probably do also. Trudy’s “Home Alone” scene would be close.

According to Hollywood rumors, there is a sequel planned with Charlize Theron in talks to play Mrs Claus. No mention of exactly what the plot is supposed to be, however. Likely more of the same, as sequels tend to do, but who the innocent family with the kid who still believes in Santa will be, or who the villains are and what they want, and exactly how Santa and Mrs. Claus get involved, and how it's different enough to make people want to watch it, there's still no mention. For the scene where Santa was trying to leave up the chimney, but it wouldn't work, and why it was working later, I have a theory: The effectiveness of Christmas Magic depends on the level of belief in Santa, as well as the amount of Christmas Cheer/Spirit. When Santa Claus was trying to leave up the chimney, it was right after the villains had killed everyone and taken the family hostage, so Christmas Spirit and belief was at that moment at an all time low in the household. When the villains had Santa Claus tied up and were interrogating him, the two henchmen were beginning to believe that he was the real Santa Claus. First they kept pulling Christmas gifts out of his sack, more gifts than what the sack appeared to be able to physically hold. Then he called them each by their real names, and mentioned things from their pasts that only the real Santa Claus could have known. Even Trudy's trick with the fake snow boosted the level of Christmas Spirit in the room. So the bad guys belief in Christmas gave Santa back the ability to use Christmas Magic.

Before I watch the reaction, I'm going to make a prediction. She is a fan of the SAW movies, so I'm going to guess that she's really going to enjoy the "Home Alone" traps the little girl sets up. Update: I was correct.

24:25 "Didn't Mythbusters bust that myth?" Yes. Good call on the Mythbusters. But. Let's not forget that John McClane did that to the bad guys in Live Free or Die Hard. I mean, this movie is the most fun when we call out every Die Hard reference, right?

Fire extinguishers are pretty heavy and pretty sturdy, if you shot one; it would probably ricochet the bullet, and if it did pierce the casing it would create a hole and the gas would shoot out and cause it to fly off on an uncontrolled trajectory.

26:01 I think it’s because he started believing again after talking to Trudy. This was such a great Christmas story. Like how they did Santa in this. Jason’s deal was he was tired of the way that his family was with money cause it hurt his marriage so he was stealing the money to try to save his wife and kid while leaving his family. There’s a new one coming out with Joel Kinnaman called Silent Night which is about a grieving father and revenge. One thing I wished they touched on was how he became Santa from Nicomund. That would be a good flash back in a sequel.

Ink one scene that was the n the trailer that wasn’t in the movie was the bar scene when the mall santa asked the real one how long he was santa. He replied with “I started the damn thing” still and awesome movie. I saw it in theaters last year I was also living in my car at that time so it was a nice little treat.

The movie is what it is and I love it. Kind of a cross between Die Hard and Dead Pool plus Santa lol. Where is Satan Claus?! 😈🎅🏼

12:00 John Leguizamo (Mr. Scrooge) is taking a page out of John McClane's book with his comment here, quoting a famous character that he's using as an alias, ending with a personal addition never said on the silver screen by that quoted character. Yeah, this movie is the modern Die Hard. It has so many, many references to the first 4Die Hard movies ,it's almost like watching that franchise all over again.
