Really looking forward to what looks like a very well made documentary. I wonder if it will make the point that, as charismatic as Strads and Guarneris are, it is the player whose skill, style, bow pressure, vibrato and phrasing gives the ultimate character to the sound.

It is all subjective. They are all works of art. I think the right violin is matched to the right player as an extension of them. It is the expression of the players soul. They are all wonderful.

I am looking forward to this documentary. In fact it is a pitty that we didn't know each other before you started this project. Maybe as you may know I play the "Gibson" Stradivari Viola (1734). The last Viola build by Antonio Stradivari. Also what might have been interesting for you is the fact that I am part of the Stradivari Quartet. The only quartet besides the Tokyo String Quartet where all members play instruments by Antonio Stradivari.

LOVED this video!!!....But why does the description fail to mention James Ehnes? He is, (in my humble opinion) one the greatest, contemporary violinists on the planet! To me, his style is the perfect balance between artistic musicality & superb technique.

Kurt S Close, sure. In fact, the eldest Guarneri, Andrea, apprenticed with Nicolo Amati. That said, Andrea's grandson, Giuseppe (a.k.a. del Gesù), very creatively departed from his family tradition and was known for his unique style. These are the Guarneri violins that are the most celebrated. The Amati violins are, in a way, predecessors to the Guarneri style and don't quite reach the same level of fame and value as Stradavari and Guarneri. A Guarneri fetched the highest price paid for a violin at the time in 1999, although Stradavari instruments later surpassed this. Whereas an Amati is valued at around $600k.

***** Wow. That's amazing information. Thanks! I just asked because I bought an amati copy over a stradivarius copy (I know copies aren't at all close to the real thing, but you know. Maybe the strad copy was better) Still very happy with my violin now. Maybe in the near future I can get a real one. Thanks for such an enlightening comment. :)
