VIR Crash 2009 involving Jack Hall (black vette going slowly)

This is the video of the bone head that took me out at VIR. I was leading the T1 race about to LAP Jack Hall (black vette ahead). Johnny Miller and I were lapping in the 2:01s and Jack was just cruising around...his fastest lap being a 2:17. He moved to the left at the top of the esses and slammed on his brakes. He should have maintained his line on the right side of the road (like the A-sedan car the lap before); but instead decided to move left right in front of me.

If you've ever driven VIR, you'd know that turn 9 goes up and over a small rise. I was at the limit there and couldn't turn much. I did a little, but that was all I could do. Plus, considering the fact that he should have stayed to the right, I anticipated what he SHOULD have done and early apexed 9 so I'd have a straighter line entering 10 (on the left)...making the pass easier. The point of all this is that he should have STAYED ON LINE. That's the racing rule.

@wtknght1 14 лет назад
There's no doubt he was trying to move out of the way and did it incorrectly. The rule goes that the slower car should stay ON LINE and the faster car will move off line to go around. Considering in the lap previous to this one, the Camaro did what he was supposed to do (and stayed on line), I assumed that Jack would do the same. I intentionally kept my speed up, early apexed, and anticipated my pass to the inside of the next turn. He unexpectedly moved off line and slammed on his brakes.

@nitish21 1. I had no idea I was about to rear end him. I assumed he would do the correct thing and stay on the racing line...and certainly not slam on his brakes. 2. If you're not "at the limit", then it's easy to just "pull your car off the track to the right onto the grass." However, once you do some racing, you'll realize that racing is all about pushing the car (and yourself) to the limits. Any sudden move there on my part would have meant a spin and worse wreck.

I haven't seen or heard from him. I sure hope not!!!! Man, that dude was clueless on the track! Glad to see you (and a few others) that understand you can't just jerk the car left or right when the car is at the limit...and especially not after cresting a hill! That was my 2d big wreck in 11 years racing...neither were my fault thankfully.

I have watched this thing over and over again and perhaps if he had not hit brakes you may have one. But perhaps had you slowed earlier made yourself more room to the right you might have mised him. He was not out of control so this is a hard one.

Actually Hall is the bonehead driving the black and yellow car...and was at fault. For those who don't race and have never been to VIR, the proper thing to do is to maintain your line and let the passing car (me in this case) move off line to pass. Jack Hall moved from the normal line into the "passing area" and then slammed on his brakes. If you don't know, the proper line to enter the next turn is on the right side of the track. He was reprimanded .....for his actions.

So, two years later, is Hall still "racing?" I agree completely that someone in a C5 shouldn't be racing if they're running 2:17s. Having gotten hairy at the top of the hill there myself, I would never try to yank the car to the left or right to avoid someone doing something like that.
@wtknght1
@wtknght1 15 лет назад
I"m not looking down...I'm trying to keep my head from going left. I'm hitting about 1.6 Gs there and have to "lean" my head over a bit to accommodate for the forces.
@wtknght1
@wtknght1 13 лет назад
No, there's no wing on my car. It's just a T1 car similar to his (C5 vs C6). Jack is always 10-20 seconds per lap slower than the top T1 guys, and is basically just out there joyriding. Hopefully he will not return to T1 as he could have seriously hurt someone with his boneheaded move.

How is it not Hall's fault? Watch the first pass again. Never mind that you learn at your first HPDE not to go off line when being overtaken, but he also slammed on his brakes in the middle of a turn - which you also learn not to do at your first HPDE.

The black Vette checked up on the brakes hard at the exit of a corner, a spot where he should have been accelerating (or in his case at least maintaining the speed he carried through the apex). The wreck is Absolutely his fault, No common sense and no driving talent on his behalf.

I watch more events at VIR than I partake in. The first time I ever crapped my pants in an HPDE was on that same turn, taking it at South course speeds one day, and then coming up on it on the Grand course the next day. That said, not knowing either of you, the car in front was definitely at fault here. More as a fan than a driver, I can't understand what his train of thought must have been.

@0966534 I checked over Hall's car years ago at Roebling. I'm glad you have his car...so he's not racing it!! :) Good luck...hope to see you on track somewhere. cwi

Why not...it's not top secret info. And quite honestly, I want everyone who gets on track with this moron to know who he is, where he is and watch out for his actions...'cause he's gonna end up killing somebody. He's out on a Sunday drive while the rest of us are racing. He shouldn't be out there. If you aren't going to race, then go do an HPDE or your own track day.

It's just him. We never really could figure out why he'd just go drive around and not at least push the car a little...but for several years, that's all he did. The car itself was fine...I checked it over personally at a Roebling event. I guess he just wanted to say that he raced a Corvette. I think his fastest lap in the VIR race was a 2:17, while Johnny and I were doing 2:01s! Very irritating...and expensive.

Maybe that’s fast to him. It’s not like you’re out to win the TA championship. You’ve already stated you acted on what you thought he was going to do.
@metalslaw
@metalslaw 15 лет назад
Sure it's the faster cars responsibility to make a clean pass. But it's always the slower cars responsibility to maintain the racing line as fast as they can _til the faster car makes it obvious in your mirrors which side he will pass on_. As soon as the faster car picks an obvious overtaking line, not in line with you, you can slow down. In this case, the slower car slowed down on the racing line.... a big no-no.
@68ray
@68ray 14 лет назад
Scary to think that guys like that are allowed on track during competition. Even most HPDE drivers know to hold your line when being overtaken. You can bet I'll be checking the registration sheet for the name Jack Hall when I'm at VIR next month with NASA.

anyone that thinks this is Halls fault has never driven a "race car" Hall was doing every bit of 80mph and to have an inexperienced driver do what he did infront of him.. from halls point it was completely unavoidable. hall did the right thing and aimed at a glance off point so he did not kill him and the guy in front. good save for what its worth.

What would have been wrong with slowing down before you rammed the car up someone else's bumper. And why all the bad mouthing. Dammit man its racing no one is perfect!
@wtknght1
@wtknght1 5 лет назад
You don't race do you? The problem with slowing down is that I was leading in class T1 with the second place car right behind me. We were lapping Jack! Let me say that again - we were lapping Jack...in just half the race distance...who was going 16-17 seconds per lap slower than we were! His car wasn't damaged - he just sucks as a driver - clueless. And on the first part of the video, I showed me lapping another car and how it should be done. The car being passed, stays on line. Jack (unexpectedly) moved off line and then slammed on his brakes. I don't expect anyone to be perfect, but this wasn't his first rodeo. He was always dog slow, but normally followed the "rules of racing." When you don't follow those rules, you put cars and people in danger. When you start racing and winning championships, you'll understand.
@hagerz

@@wtknght1 I'm a drag racer. True I don't do road courses. But it seems that before I would put my car in harm's way I would just slow down. We live in 2 totally different worlds in racing. I have had people almost cross the lane and I let out of it. Yes I lost the race but kept my car intact for future events. I'm certified by the NHRA so I do race. There's an idiot born every second of the day and there not worth tearing up a 100k plus car over let alone put my life out there just to win.

@wtknght1 12 лет назад
Dude, you were 16 seconds per lap slower than us...16 per lap! And we're in the same class!!!! I was lapping you after just 8 or 9 laps...again...we're in the same class. If 16 seconds per lap is not "that bad" what is YOUR definition of "that bad?" 15? 10? 5? And again, the racing rule is that when you're being passed, you stay ON LINE and let the passing car go around you. The fact that you believe it's not "that bad" is conclusive you should not be racing. Do DE events instead.

Actually I (driving the white Corvette) wanted to kick his (Jack Hall driving the black C5) ass for that little stunt. And yes, I realize it's the passing car's responsibility to pass safely, but it's also the car being passed' responsibility to drive safe and give racing room. The stewards of the meet recognized his errors and penalized him (the C5 - Jack Hall). Once you start racing, you'll realize what he did was idiotic...and very dangerous.

Nah man, you're completely in the right; you were going to wait to pass him, because of the distance you had coming into the esses, and fell into the normal racing line, but what in the hell did he think about slamming on his brakes like that? My Mom drives better, and she's 61. You can tell Jack I said so : )
