Just putting the Mukesh Ambani thing out there. His son allegedly was out on a joyride late night in his Aston Martin and caused an accident . The news came and swiftly disappeared. One of the drivers, whose cellphone placed him on the other side of the city said he was driving. The two people whose cars were damaged got brand new cars the next day. Thankfully , nobody died.

As someone who was born in India and spent two years in the US, I was caught off guard by America. I was honestly surprised by how welcoming people were in Texas when I moved here. Most movies, tv shows etc lead me to believe otherwise. I love my time here. But then again, I was also taken aback by how fragile the West actually is. During the Texas Blackouts a few weeks back, the state came to a standstill. Considering that everything in my apartment required electricity, I literally couldn't cook stuff or even heat water. No delivery or takeout and it was a nightmare experience. A blackout in India doesn't really affect you that much because for one thing , it's more common than in the US and you can still easily survive without electricity. Also the toilet roll crisis or sanitizer crisis showed how fragile Western people are. A slight indication of damage and they freak out like the world's going to end. It definitely has been an interesting experience comparing my Indian and American experience and I hope I can continue doing so. PS: I am terrible with any accent, so I speak English the way Friends taught me to do lol

Indians and Egyptians don’t like violence eiher. He was trying to say that west is so privileged so rich that all they need to do is march to get their voices heard. Indians and poorer nations have to risk their lives to get their voices heard.
@CineDesi
@CineDesi 3 года назад
That’s an oversimplification. I imagine it’s not as violent as other places in the world, but many times marched turn into riots and thusly people have gotten killed.
@rodgerbloor6680
@rodgerbloor6680 3 года назад
@@CineDesi Yes India is not as violent as may be other poor countries but these days things are changing in India to the extreme right. Unfortunately in India left wing politics is almost dead. The left wing political parties have collapsed nearly and they are decimated in all elections. There is no opposition to the ruling right in India. The right wing is at its peak nearly ruling and exerting it's power accross all states and the whole country, media everything. The right is very powerful here in India. I think Vir Das should never Compare Trump with Modi. Honourable PM Modi has power to do and execute things that Trump can only think in his mind. He is very strong and powerful and has his grip over everything and Trump is nothing but a big political failure very opposite to Modi who is a massive sucess in wooing India to get an absolute Mandate and majority for his re-election. So India is changing and the left wing liberals take a lot of risk to have their voices or opposition heard. That's what Vir Das meant. He basically meant that in India it is hard to disagree or protest against the right as it is very powerful while the western democracies have a proper balance of power for the right and left.

@@TheVedant05 I am talking about an opposition and stop judging me and my political opinion. I was talking about the pathetic state of India's opposition. I didn't say they destroyed the opposition I am saying opposition is destroyed and when that happens the ruling party whichever it is becomes confident enough to take authoritarian steps and that is inevitable. This politics and everything is fare here. Opposition destroyed itself or is destroyed I don't care the truth is opposition is dead. Really which is that so called news channel spreading narrative against the ruling party? Name one. Also Trump never had control of so many states. Besides Trump never had so much support or never had so much media support.

@Games Account excuse me, "we Indians are poor"?? Stereotype much? We're talking about people who stay in hotels where they take your bags to your room. These people, irrespective of which country they're from, are certainly NOT poor. And before you say that India doesn't have a tipping culture, think of it in more Indian terms. Don't you tip a parking lot attendant at a restaurant even though he didn't park your car for you? Leave a tip at a restaurant? Heard someone ask for "bakhsheesh" or a "boney"? Sure it's not like the west where someone would openly ask for the tip or berate you for not tipping, but that doesn't mean that people in India don't, or more ridiculously, can't tip!

@@preeti_prasad Not really, except USA, tipping is specifically a choice and people only give it if they feel that the person did a good job. It is not about money or being stingy, but the way the service industry works in different countries. USA has made it the customers job to subsidise the salaries of servers as they are not paid much by their employers, while here, they get the normal salaries (which is still low, but that is another issue entierly).

Well there isn't a tipping culture in India ,yes you can tip but you're not obligated to tip someone for filling your Gas , I have never seen a gas station ( we call it petrol pump) where you have to do it yourself , wealth inequality is huge over here ,we don't even have a minimum wage ,I never had a problem with Simpsons ,it's funny to me. @@dOVERanalyst USA has a wierd system where servers (restaurant waiters, delivery people etc) don't get minimum wages that other jobs get. Their wages are around $2.3 (not exactly this figure) per hour while normally it is $7.5 per hour. They actually get paid in majority by customers and not their employers. Apparently actually giving livable wages would cause prices to rise a lot (which is not really the case in any other country where normal wages are paid) and thus customers are supposed to subsidise all employee wages.

For gas stations particularly, I think they are supposed to it themselves and so if anyone helps, you are supposed to tip them. They loose their identity and I have seen it many times, and have seen this many times. I feel it is more coresspondent to the country they go to. The thing is this video was made for an Indian audience so you don't understand most of the jokes.. 1. Since India has so many people, and unemployment rates are VERY high, you can FIND a person to do anything for you, even below the minimum wage. He was highlighting that and added a lot more dimensions, ranging from oppression to the "Grass is greener on the other side". 2. I am not generalizing, but there are Indian-American people, or sometimes just tourists from India who visit any of the English-speaking countries and try to flaunt, using their branded stuff(that's where he made that NRI joke) and their 'accent', which you can sometimes very clearly detect, is fake. The idea behind that is that they are somehow better that the Indians who never got to go there. If it is done in America, you can understand they are trying to blend in. But these people do that in India, and it is done so that they can 'stand out'. (And the 'pawri ho rahi hai' joke can be understood in this perspective. They were making fun of the person's accent) 3. About Indians not having any Russian or Mexican accent, he is again talking about the people I described above. There never seem to be any of these Indians who speak (or rather fake) any Mexican or Russian accents. Again, the idea is that the 'West' is somehow better, you become more privileged once you visit it, and hence you flaunt that, while you don't flaunt other countries' accents. 4. The Apu joke, -- he has kinda made it earlier. How most Indians don't care about it because they are dealing with bigger problems -- like poverty. But the hue and cry some Indian-American people made on it, he is making fun of that. Its okay if Indian-Americans do that, they have little perspective on REAL Indian problems. But there were some Indians in India who got offended at such a silly thing, when there are clearly MUCH bigger problems plaguing India. He is trying to highlight that. 5. About marching, he is just saying how easy it is to get attention in the West. You guys have more rights and get attention just by marching, while there are people in countries like Hong Kong and Myanmar recently, where even violence does not work. So he is just telling how the West is better, they have an entitlement to justice, because your governments listen to you. So here he was just resenting Asian countries. [My perspective, didn't get the entire joke]

So education in india is EXTREMELY important and it actually is a very common question to be posed with. Almost every person has a bachelor's degree and end up doing something completely different but in the lower stages of education then you aren't aware of the opportunities, so it is very astounding when in India you hear that a person with an engineering profile is a singer, india is slowly adapting to this and are quiet supportive but most of the time it is shocking for a Indian to hear that, especially South Indians who give priority only to education. Secondly judging a person by their college is at some level wrong, but nothing compared to skin, tone, caste. On the other hand colleges in India look at your marks and having good grades equals good education which inturn equals good standards in society and prosperity in the future, I being a tamilian think it's valid enough.

Both my parents are from different states and we live in a third state...with widely differing accents. There is a difference in the way I talk with my cousins from both sides... And with my local friends too. I don't think about doing it... It's just natural for me..... Anyone else noticed themselves doing this???

The point about changing accent to blend in and not get noticed is soooo true. In India when I moved from my hometown to different states I gave my best to sound exactly the same as others when speaking different languages with accent and stuff. I am sure people who catch accents outside do so because of the same reason. However, I also agree with the fact that some people just want to look and sound cool. There are people like that. One of my best buds was like that. Edit: oh and some people just subconsciously pick some things up without noticing

The accent aspiration is not about those born & born brought up in those particular countries. It is those go for education abroad and come back with an accent. We literally see people who go to the US for say a few months and come back with an accent. Also, just because we don't take offence doesn't mean it should happen. Apu should not exist even otherwise.... One time is okay.. But we see a lot of Indian characters shown to speak like Apu.

Language changes but the accent remains same and india has so many languages and every language have a different tone or accent. So, when they speak english, the tone or accent remains the same to that of their mother tongue. Thats my theory. I may be wrong.

Do you know how the tipping system started in America? In the late 1800's rich people, when would go to a restaurant would bribe the waiters so that they would bring their food early and fresh, when the owners found out about it, they started paying the waiters less, now they HAD to depend on the tips, and now if you don't tip in America, you are a d*ck... Small one. Tipping is only prevalent in America, in most of the other countries its not required. In Japan it's insulting the the server if you give tip. Indians are not stingy, the tradition in America just always HAS been arceyic.

With the accent thing, his point was not that people choose to form accents but that somehow people only tend to pick up accents when they are inspirational or keep whatever they already had. But you're right, a lot of accent changes do come from wanting to fit in.

West has forgotten what goes up should come down. West has set the golden standard to the rest of the world in all aspects. It is true every Indian is curious from which University one has obtained. To get a CA similar to PCA is so difficult one should spend atleast 5 years. To get PCS in USA is very easy. That accent may be true for some extent it is the additional knowledge one has. Any body with accent will get into trouble if he has not mastered the knowledge. I had a friend of mine who has a large poultry farm whose brother is a doctor in USA who struggle to save/ spend and it is often his brother pays all his biils whenever he visits USA .He always suggests him to return to India and make money .

A lot of Indians, "pick up an accent" even when they were in the West for even a limited period. I put that phrase in quotes because these accents are silly attempts at showing off that you've been to outside India. They aren't regional varieties. I think Vir was poking fun at those Indians, not Americans or Brits or Indian origin. Many Indians, including me, have met couple of such "wannabe" Indians and it's really irritating to be around them when they do that. Like okay Suresh, you went to San Francisco for 2 months, you're clearly faking your accent, So just speak in your normal Indian accent, or shut up lol
