On the road with Gregg Bissonette and Dom Famularo on the DRUMscene Live Tour throughout Australia in August/September 2013. Here are some highlights of my segment of the show, taken in Sydney. So great to see lot's of old friends in the audience on this night. Recorded my drums with 2x SM27 overheads, and a kick and snare mic, into an RME Fireface 800. That's it... mixed on my laptop while in transit between Australia and Tokyo a few weeks back.

Virgil is the drum version of Shakespeare, his playing will be remember and studied extensively long after he is gone. He is on a completely separate level to 99% of professional drummers. Utterly incredible.
@Riddim4
@Riddim4 3 года назад
He’s also created musical contexts in which he can do these things and make a living. Lots of folks can play - fewer can compose well, push the envelope and generate gigs. Much of the music one might be asked to play on a gig or session requires a different approach. He has my respect.

That was a great analogy, I always say he is the Allan Holdsworth of drums!

That is a very astute comment . I also believe him to be the most technical drummer I have ever heard. God made me great …….. But not yet Quote Virgil Donati

Its his switching of timing at will is what stands out for me! In time out of time half time just switching in a milisecond! Its all timing! Accents parradiddles just amazing to listen to and astonishing to watch! Greatest ozzi drummer all the way back to hey hey its saturday! Elite is not the word! I cant listen to thrash drummers after 1 minute its all the same timing but this. Well nothing left to say but virg the greatest for me!

sw1tched I used to love DT, there’s no denying they are top class musicians up there with the best but also their writing has become garbage recently. I'm sorry but Virgil would be wasting his time. Anyway rather than label someone a moron for an opinion, how about give your equally valid opinion without a dose of douchebaggery.

Prog4Prog I understand your reasoning , but IMO virgil also doesn't play with the greatest musicians currently? I mean they are pretty talented but he sticks out and should be playing with cats like John Petrucci, Joe Satriani and Steve Vai all the time.

Mind = blown ... The greatest drummer to walk the earth. No one displays this amount of technical skill with that much power and endurance. I have met Virgil twice at clinics and had a 1-on-1 lesson with him; those 2 events have given me years of challenging practice routine.

@DaveMacLeanPT

I asked him to transcribe a particular kick drum pattern he plays often in clinics. Check out the video he has of him playing at Montreal drum fest from 2004. My comment about it is in the comments on that video! I also asked him about practice routines. He seems to have a very spiritual connection to drumming and practice. Cool guy!

Virgil, out there blazing the trail for us mortals to stumble down in pursuit... so many of the things he plays are so brilliant and difficult, and I think he just creates much of it spontaneously. That's why it sounds so effortless, even though a drummer will know it's next to impossible. This is what pushing the limits of human ability looks like; it no doubt has taken brutal self-discipline to get this far. Virgil seems to be that rarest of persons, who not only finds supreme potential for a certain skill, but dedicates fully to it.

To the 9 to 5'ers as it were (1st, 2nd, 3rd shifters) couldn't do what virgil does without extreme sacrifice. This man has found a way to make a living doing this. I find that beautiful, I love that something like this exists, and worried at the same time. I hope this level of ability and skills never dies.

Yeah; I agree. Tried watching a Mike Portnoy drum clinic solo after this just to see the difference (because my drummer friend was always praising Mike) and it was so musically boring in comparison I couldn't watch it anymore. No one pushes the envelope like Virgil. He isn't just holding a beat over a measure. He is creating standalone music with drums, and really treating the drum-set as a musical instrument instead of a 'beat making/splicing device'.

Virgil's creative freedom is powered by such a solid grasp of fundamentals, that he can literally "ride" them and allow them to dictate time autonomously, freeing his attention to seek playful and creative manipulations with no distraction. the scariest thing about Virgil is that every time I see a new video, he's doing something even more impossible than his last video. Been watching Virgil solo since 1993 and certain years were frustrating for him. He had so much technique but he couldn't figure out how to not spend all this time beating the drums to death playing as fast as possible thus developing a relationship between himself and the tonality and range of sounds the drums give back to us. If you watch him in 2007 his solo is sick but he's not doing anything you haven't seen before he's totally off any chart. But when he stops to restart you can tell he's not sure how to take it two a more musical platform. Here he nails it, Now he is in the same league as Simon Phillips. But Phillips cannot do this technique anymore which he did in his twenties. That is one of Virgil's great strengths, the older he gets nothing slows him down or tires in out. He never seems out of air, and the longer he plays the stronger he gets. but in this solo he's extraordinary musical. This solo is like a Symphony Orchestra played by one man. The only other drummer I've ever seen in history who can do the same things and never run out of steam was young John Bonham. I'm probably older than most of you Botham would take 45 minutes solos, and he would always get the biggest ovation of the night at any Led Zeppelin concert.. What he did was physically impossible even if you were right up front. And unlike Virgil who is had 30 to 40 years to practice John Bonham played inhumanly and left every drummer behind after 1 year on the kit. The two greatest drummers of all time. I say bravo to Virgil Donati for constantly upping his music game in the art of drumming by learning nuance and finesse in addition to his obvious inhuman strength and speed. I cannot wait to see him play after the covid crisis is over. Always wonderful to see musicians that get a gift from the universe.

We ended up almost getting kicked out by the people working there even though Virgil didn't care. Just goes to show how he doesn't care about the money. One of the most down to earth coolest people i've ever met. Definitely try to go to one of his concerts or clinics sometime and you're pretty much guaranteed to meet him especially in a smaller venue. Good luck friend! :)
