Absolute monster as usual!!! I can't believe he played some 4/4!! Nice to hear him play jazz as well...so rare!! Virgil Donati is just so versatile and powerful!
Was on another Virgil video before this one where he was demonstrating some of his independence exercises (double paradiddles between left hand and foot layered on top of single paradiddles between right hand and foot) then switch the patterns from left side to right side at both moderate and fast tempos) and morons were on that video in the comments claiming that what he was doing was pointless and he wasn't "musical" LOL
Hats off to the other musicians that gig with Virgil! I’d be standing there on stage drooling like an idiot that just discovered fire while watching Virgil practically invent a new time signature just cause he fuckin felt like it. 😂
This is a pretty amazing video, you get to see so much of Virgils range of playing, incredible stuff. Can't say I like all the music but I can put up with it to watch him.
This is Steve Smith's band, Vital Information. Every one of them are absolute monster players. Vinnie Vincent on guitar and Baron Brown on bass. I saw these guys play with Steve Smith a few years ago, these guys are no joke! All amazing players.
Nice Work, Wow it's the Master Virgil Donati, i Remember him at DrumTek, at Melbourne in 1998 it was an Amazing show, Thank's BestPart Capture, Keep Up the Great Work.
I discovered Crissi Poland from Weckl/Oliver's cover of Higher Ground. Honestly, I'm usually drawn to instrumentalists rather than vocalists, but I'm now a Poland fan too - and only a small part of that because I keep finding her associated with some of the finest drummers in the world. Thanks for posting this! EDIT: I wish the full performance - dialogue and all - was available
Vinnie Valentino is no slouch on the guitar either. Seen them both play with Steve Smith's Vital Information a few years ago. I was blown away by the whole band.
I know this guy is a monster but what's he doing with a garage band female singer mangling Stevie Wonder songs. How come Sting or Jeff Beck never picked him up?
Both Sting and Jeff Beck have been playing with Vinnie Colaiuta. Colaiuta is widely regarded as one of the best drummers ever on the planet. As good as Virgil is, he'd really bring nothing to the table that Vinnie hasn't already done. The only area I think that Virgil would have an edge would be foot speed, but as far as versatility and independence, Vinnie Colaiuta has few equals. (I'm assuming you already know this, based on your screen name! LOL) Salute!
@@tonyr2360 In my opinion I'd say that Virgil's technique is paralleled by none, not even Colaiuta. Virgil can play "harder stuff", so to speak. That being said, Vinnie is not far off in technique. But what Vinnie really shines for is his insane, chameleonic vocabulary. He plays every style as if he had dedicated his whole life to just one of them; his phrasings are so original and yet so "appropriate" for whichever style he's playing. This, I believe, is perhaps an even higher artistic achievement than Virgil's insane technicality. Especially considering that Colaiuta is not far off at all techniquewise. Virgil could never play swing, latin, reggae, etc... like Colaiuta does, but saying Colaiuta has more independence than Virgil... No sir, no way. At least he's never been seen doing the insanities Virgil does. I'm not trying to be cocky at all, but if you think that way about Virgil's technical prowess, I believe you haven't heard much of him at all.
you forgot one thing, that virgil is master artist, he don't need to be a player, he play whatever he wants, because you know,,, he is the best drummer in the world
@@KONAMAN100 Is that a good thing? The best drummers play what's needed...end of story. Just shedding on a Zeppelin tune is not very musical IMO. It's strange because I've seen Virgil play pocket before so maybe it's just him messing around at soundcheck but I have to say I just don't really like how he's playing here.
HMMMMMMMM..... YEAH HES KILLER.... BUT.... BUT.... WHERES THE STEADY FOUR ON THE FLOOR DRIVE ON THE WONDER TUNE.... & ALL THAT EXTRA HI HAT NOTES.... THERES STILL A WORD CALLED POCKET..... MATTERS NOT WHOM WE ARE!!!!!!!!
Giovani22 WELL OF COURSE NOT..... BUT THIS IS WHEN ITS NOT ABOUT THE DRUMMER BUT THE MUSIC.... THE TRUE REAL DRUMMER.... WHEN IT COMES TO THE MUSIC WILL PAY HOMEGE TO THE SONG BEING PLAYED..... HAL BLANE SAID IT BEST..... ANYWAY OK BRO COOL.... HE IS A MONSTER NO PUN INTENDED..... NO PROBLEM AT ALL..... 👌 😎 MAN THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR ⏳
its weird to see monster players like him playing straight rock or a shuffle and they cant fuckin groove at all. Zero groove here. Maybe he was having a bad night Please somebody tell the singer to stop singing.
